Send an evil spirit
Send an evil spirit
14 But the Spirit of the Lord departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the Lord troubled him.

16:14 Scripture passages such as this seem to indicate that God sometimes behaves in demonic or evil ways (; Kg 22:23; ; ; ; ; ; ; ). Such passages must be understood within the overall framework of the Bible’s teachings about God. Scripture affirms that God is completely righteous (; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; , ; ; ; ; ; Hs 14:9; ; ; ), hates evil (), and never does anything unjust (). At the same time, God created a universe with built-in rewards and punishments that reinforce divine moral law. For example, when people disregard His moral order and abuse their bodies through the misuse of food, alcohol or sex, they will predictably experience health problems. Such problems can be interpreted as warning signs motivating us to give up bad behavior and do what is right.
23 Then God sent an evil spirit between Abimelech and the men of Shechem; and the men of Shechem dealt treacherously with Abimelech:
1 And Abimelech the son of Jerubbaal went to Shechem unto his mother’s brethren, and communed with them, and with all the family of the house of his mother’s father, saying,
16 With him is strength and wisdom: The deceived and the deceiver are his.
26 With the pure thou wilt shew thyself pure; And with the froward thou wilt shew thyself froward.
11 They that are delivered from the noise of archers in the places of drawing water, There shall they rehearse the righteous acts of the Lord, Even the righteous acts toward the inhabitants of his villages in Israel: Then shall the people of the Lord go down to the gates.
7 I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the Lord do all these things.
9 And if the prophet be deceived when he hath spoken a thing, I the Lord have deceived that prophet, and I will stretch out my hand upon him, and will destroy him from the midst of my people Israel.
13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
15 O Lord God of Israel, thou art righteous: for we remain yet escaped, as it is this day: behold, we are before thee in our trespasses: for we cannot stand before thee because of this.
4 And forgive us our sins; for we also forgive every one that is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil.
11 And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie:
11 They that are delivered from the noise of archers in the places of drawing water, There shall they rehearse the righteous acts of the Lord, Even the righteous acts toward the inhabitants of his villages in Israel: Then shall the people of the Lord go down to the gates.
9 Oh let the wickedness of the wicked come to an end; but establish the just:
For the righteous God trieth the hearts and reins.
10 According to thy name, O God, so is thy praise unto the ends of the earth:
Thy right hand is full of righteousness.
19 Thy righteousness also, O God, is very high,
Who hast done great things:
O God, who is like unto thee!
15 O Lord God of Israel, thou art righteous: for we remain yet escaped, as it is this day: behold, we are before thee in our trespasses: for we cannot stand before thee because of this.
3 His work is honourable and glorious:
And his righteousness endureth for ever.
4 Unto the upright there ariseth light in the darkness:
He is gracious, and full of compassion, and righteous.
9 Oh let the wickedness of the wicked come to an end; but establish the just: For the righteous God trieth the hearts and reins.
5 Gracious is the Lord, and righteous;
Yea, our God is merciful.
137 TZADDI.
Righteous art thou, O Lord, and upright are thy judgments.
142 Thy righteousness is an everlasting righteousness,
And thy law is the truth.
10 According to thy name, O God, so is thy praise unto the ends of the earth: Thy right hand is full of righteousness.
17 The Lord is righteous in all his ways,
And holy in all his works.
8 For the moth shall eat them up like a garment,
And the worm shall eat them like wool:
But my righteousness shall be for ever,
And my salvation from generation to generation.
19 Thy righteousness also, O God, is very high, Who hast done great things: O God, who is like unto thee!
24 But let him that glorieth glory in this,
That he understandeth and knoweth me,
That I am the Lord which exercise lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness, in the earth:
For in these things I delight, saith the Lord.
7 O Lord, righteousness belongeth unto thee, but unto us confusion of faces, as at this day; to the men of Judah, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and unto all Israel, that are near, and that are far off, through all the countries whither thou hast driven them, because of their trespass that they have trespassed against thee.
3 His work is honourable and glorious: And his righteousness endureth for ever.
25 O righteous Father, the world hath not known thee: but I have known thee, and these have known that thou hast sent me.
17 For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.
5 And I heard the angel of the waters say, Thou art righteous, O Lord, which art, and wast, and shalt be, because thou hast judged thus.
4 Unto the upright there ariseth light in the darkness: He is gracious, and full of compassion, and righteous.

17 And let none of you imagine evil in your hearts against his neighbour; and love no false oath: for all these are things that I hate, saith the Lord.

14 What shall we say then? Is there unrighteousness with God? God forbid.
9 And if the prophet be deceived when he hath spoken a thing, I the Lord have deceived that prophet, and I will stretch out my hand upon him, and will destroy him from the midst of my people Israel.

Saul had lived a life of chronic disobedience to God, and therefore had opened himself to demonic oppression. While it was a form of punishment, because of Saul’s disregard for God’s moral order, it was also intended to drive him to repent and turn back to the Lord. God, Who is Master of all the created order, will use even demons, against their will, for redemptive purposes.
