1 “I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser. 2 “Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit, He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit, He prunes it so that it may bear more fruit. 3 “You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you. 4 “Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself unless it abides in the vine, so neither can you unless you abide in Me. 5 “I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me and I in him, he bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing. 6 “If anyone does not abide in Me, he is thrown away as a branch and dries up; and they gather them, and cast them into the fire and they are burned. 7 “If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. 8 “My Father is glorified by this, that you bear much fruit, and so prove to be My disciples. 9 “Just as the Father has loved Me, I have also loved you; abide in My love. 10 “If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love; just as I have kept My Father’s commandments and abide in His love. 11 “These things I have spoken to you so that My joy may be in you, and that your joy may be made full.

(v.1) “I am the true vine”
What is the vine’s relationship to the branches?
Answer-The Vine is the life giving source to the branch
(v.1) Jesus is saying that I am the only lifegiving source known to mankind.
(v.1) “My Father is the vinedresser”
What does a vinedresser do?
Pruning-Pruning is an essential task as it removes dead, diseased or stunted fruits to make room for new growth, ultimately leading to a healthy and productive vine.
Pest Control-To effectively eradicate pests from the crop, the vinedresser must have knowledge of the type of pests common to the region as well as the type of pests attracted to the particular grape species.
Irrigation-Vinedressers must also closely monitor vineyards to ensure each is receiving the correct amount of water and irrigation during the growing season
Harvest-The Vinedresser must evaluate the proper time to harvest fruit at just the right time. He is well aware of the difference between ripe fruit and unripe fruit.
Tell me how the vinedresser has functioned in these areas in your life?
2 “Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit, He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit, He prunes it so that it may bear more fruit.

john 15:
(v.3) He tells the disciples that they are already clean. Meaning the are in right relationship with him. Because I have ask you “to follow me” and you obeyed. Your willingness to follow me cleansed you of your sins.
(v.4) “Abide in me” that word “Abide” is in the imperative. This means that Jesus is commanding something.
Abide definition:To remain, dwell and live somewhere
-This language should take us back to an OT story:
1 Now the Lord said to Moses, “One more plague I will bring on Pharaoh and on Egypt; after that he will let you go from here. When he lets you go, he will surely drive you out from here completely. 2 “Speak now in the hearing of the people that each man ask from his neighbor and each woman from her neighbor for articles of silver and articles of gold.” 3 The Lord gave the people favor in the sight of the Egyptians. Furthermore, the man Moses himself was greatly esteemed in the land of Egypt, both in the sight of Pharaoh’s servants and in the sight of the people. 4 Moses said, “Thus says the Lord, ‘About midnight I am going out into the midst of Egypt, 5 and all the firstborn in the land of Egypt shall die, from the firstborn of the Pharaoh who sits on his throne, even to the firstborn of the slave girl who is behind the millstones; all the firstborn of the cattle as well. 6 ‘Moreover, there shall be a great cry in all the land of Egypt, such as there has not been before and such as shall never be again. 7 ‘But against any of the sons of Israel a dog will not even bark, whether against man or beast, that you may understand how the Lord makes a distinction between Egypt and Israel.’

1 Now the Lord said to Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt, 2 “This month shall be the beginning of months for you; it is to be the first month of the year to you. 3 “Speak to all the congregation of Israel, saying, ‘On the tenth of this month they are each one to take a lamb for themselves, according to their fathers’ households, a lamb for each household. 4 ‘Now if the household is too small for a lamb, then he and his neighbor nearest to his house are to take one according to the number of persons in them; according to what each man should eat, you are to divide the lamb. 5 ‘Your lamb shall be an unblemished male a year old; you may take it from the sheep or from the goats. 6 ‘You shall keep it until the fourteenth day of the same month, then the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel is to kill it at twilight. 7 ‘Moreover, they shall take some of the blood and put it on the two doorposts and on the lintel of the houses in which they eat it. 8 ‘They shall eat the flesh that same night, roasted with fire, and they shall eat it with unleavened bread and bitter herbs. 9 ‘Do not eat any of it raw or boiled at all with water, but rather roasted with fire, both its head and its legs along with its entrails. 10 ‘And you shall not leave any of it over until morning, but whatever is left of it until morning, you shall burn with fire. 11 ‘Now you shall eat it in this manner: with your loins girded, your sandals on your feet, and your staff in your hand; and you shall eat it in haste—it is the Lord’s Passover. 12 ‘For I will go through the land of Egypt on that night, and will strike down all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgments—I am the Lord. 13 ‘The blood shall be a sign for you on the houses where you live; and when I see the blood I will pass over you, and no plague will befall you to destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt.

4 “Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself unless it abides in the vine, so neither can you unless you abide in Me.
exod
john 15:5
(v.4) “As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself unless it abides in the vine, so neither can you unless you abide in Me” If you do not remain or dwell in the vine it is impossible for you to bear fruit. It is impossible for you to accomplish anything that will go beyond the grave.
Tell me about this fruit, what does spiritual fruit look like?
1 It was for freedom that Christ set us free; therefore keep standing firm and do not be subject again to a yoke of slavery. 2 Behold I, Paul, say to you that if you receive circumcision, Christ will be of no benefit to you. 3 And I testify again to every man who receives circumcision, that he is under obligation to keep the whole Law.
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.
galatians 5:22
-Spiritual
-Spiritual Fruit are character traits that begin to manifest in the life of a believer
5 “I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me and I in him, he bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing.
(v.5) It may seem like Jesus is repeating himself, but really what he is doing is giving you the instructions needed to remain in the vine.
a. Do not forget where the source is: “I am the vine, you are the branches”
-It may seem like Jesus keep saying the same thing rephrased and reworded in different ways, and he is. This was is called Synonymous Parallelism-it was a prominent in the way that near eastern cultures tell stories to emphasize the importance of a particular subject matter. It was easy for memory and it conveyed the importance of something.
(v.5) “He who abides in me will bear much fruit” This is promise right here in scripture. This is as sure as death. The prerequisite to bearing much fruit is “abiding in Christ” this is in the present tense meaning that it is a ongoing endeavor not a one-time act.
(v.5) “For apart from Me you can do nothing”
Let’s grapple with this statement for a second?

6 “If anyone does not abide in Me, he is thrown away as a branch and dries up; and they gather them, and cast them into the fire and they are burned. 7 “If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.
(v.6-7) This is what we call a warning & Blessing scripture
a. v.6-Those that don’t “remain” are cast into the fire.
How does this passage reconcile Once saved always saved, or Eternal Security?
-Jesus is speaking phenomenologically- the word means what one can observe first hand. Since we can’t read people heart and can only ultimately read people actions. There will be those who are a part of the local church or body of believers that behaves and knows christian lingo that will abandon the faith. Jesus is saying that those who don’t abide(an observable action) will be sent to hell. What we see is them leaving, but Jesus knew they were never a part of the body in the first place.
b. v.7- “If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you”
This text seem like a blank check, tell me the conditions for this type of latitude?
“and my words abide in you” meaning that you are so intricately tied to my desire that you will generally pray the right things that are consistent with my will.
IV. The Vine’s product
IV. The Vine’s product
11 “These things I have spoken to you so that My joy may be in you, and that your joy may be made full.
john 15:
8 “My Father is glorified by this, that you bear much fruit, and so prove to be My disciples. 9 “Just as the Father has loved Me, I have also loved you; abide in My love. 10 “If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love; just as I have kept My Father’s commandments and abide in His love. 11 “These things I have spoken to you so that My joy may be in you, and that your joy may be made full.
What is the father glorified by?
-The bearing of much fruit.
-You will remember that part of the vinedresser job is to give the vine some rain, and some sun. Which are both healthy for producing fruit.
a. Rain-Blessing
b. Sun-Affliction
Tell me how the vinedresser can use Rain & Sun to grow us?
9 “Just as the Father has loved Me, I have also loved you; abide in My love.
(v.9) Do you hear this that Jesus is saying??? Jesus is loving us with the same unconditional, purifying and strong love that his father loves him with.
10 “If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love; just as I have kept My Father’s commandments and abide in His love.
(v.10) He thens give us the practical measure for how one stays or remains in the vine.... Keep my commandments!!!
(v.11) There is Joy unspeakable when we remain in the vine. When we leave the vine that Joy is surface and temporary, but when we stay in the vine that Joy is deep and long lasting.
