Read Psalm 8
One of the warnings the Lord gave to the people when they were wandering in the desert was to avoid imitating the idolatry of the pagan peoples in Canaan. Such warning was clearly expressed in the second commandment:
Exodus 20:3–5 NASB95
“You shall have no other gods before Me. “You shall not make for yourself an idol, or any likeness of what is in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the water under the earth. “You shall not worship them or serve them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and the fourth generations of those who hate Me,
Exo 20:3-5
The commandment was repeated to the generation that was about to enter the land (Deu 5:7-9).
Unfortunately, the people thought they smarter than God and did not obey the commandment but preferred worshipping creatures instead of the Creator. Just as Paul, the apostle, described it in
Romans 1:22–25 NASB95
Professing to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God for an image in the form of corruptible man and of birds and four-footed animals and crawling creatures. Therefore God gave them over in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, so that their bodies would be dishonored among them. For they exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen.
Rom 1:22-25
Those are the idols the psalmist described in
Psalm 115:4–7 NASB95
Their idols are silver and gold, The work of man’s hands. They have mouths, but they cannot speak; They have eyes, but they cannot see; They have ears, but they cannot hear; They have noses, but they cannot smell; They have hands, but they cannot feel; They have feet, but they cannot walk; They cannot make a sound with their throat.
This psalm reminds us that we have the one and only great God. The God that reveals His greatness, glory, and majesty in His creation.

God’s majesty in Creation.

“O Lord, our Lord, How majestic is your name in all the earth,” 1a

The heavens declare His glory.

“Who have displayed Your splendor above the heavens!” 1b
Psalm 19:1 NASB95
The heavens are telling of the glory of God; And their expanse is declaring the work of His hands.
As silent witnesses, they, the heavens, the stars, the planets, tell us that the Universe is not a chance result; on the contrary, they point to causality.
As silent witnesses, they tell us that the Universe is not a chance result; on the contrary, they point to causality.
Have you ever been at a mountain at night watching in awe the stars? Don’t the heavens speak about our great God?

His power and majesty is seen everywhere.

Observe the human body, you’ll see an amazing product of design. The way the different systems work in harmony with each other is amazing.
Observe any insect and you’ll be surprised by its design. Do you know that many machines were built by imitating the design found in animals? You see a digger, and the first thing that comes to mind is the mantis. When you see the fins of a scuba diver, what animal comes to mind?
If there is design, there must be a designer! Our great God is the designer!

God’s majesty in relation to man.

His greatness and glory shows man’s littleness.

When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, the moon and the stars, which You have ordained; What is man that You take thought of him…?” 3-4a
What is man in comparison to the infinite God? As an old TV character used to say, “We are nothing!”
What is man in comparison to the Universe God has made? “We are nothing!” An insignificant creature in the Universe. We are like a sandstone among all the sand of all the beaches of the world.
Yet that glorious God thought in us, in you, and in me.

His greatness showed in His love for man.

… What is the son of man that You care for him?” 4b
He not only thinks about us, in His great loved, He was willing to sacrifice His beloved son Jesus sending Him to die at the cross for our benefit.
John 3:16 NASB95
“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.
John 3:16
1 John 3:1 NASB95
See how great a love the Father has bestowed on us, that we would be called children of God; and such we are. For this reason the world does not know us, because it did not know Him.
Have you ever felt that no one cares for you? God cares for you as no one else will!
Have you ever felt that no one cares for you? God cares for you as no one else will!

God’s sovereignty represented in man.

He crowned man with glory and majesty.

“Yet You have made him a little lower than God, and You crown him with glory and majesty!” 5
God gave man a place of honor among the other creatures. Man was created as God’s own representative on earth. He was made different than the other creatures:
Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness:’ Gen 1:26

He made man ruler of His creation.

You make him to rule over the works of your hands; You have put all things under his feet, all sheep and oxen, and also the beast of the field, the birds of the heavens and the fish of the sea, whatever passes through the paths of the seas.” 6-8
As His representative, man was given dominion over the other creatures God made:
Genesis 1:26 NASB95
Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; and let them rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the cattle and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”
Gen 1:26
Man must glorify the Creator by exercising the authority received from God.
Unfortunately, when man does not know God, in his spiritual darkness and mental stupidity, he gives more importance to animals than to man: It is a crime to kill an eagle, to mistreat a cow, to put chickens in “too small cages”, but it is not a crime to abort a baby.
Since the legalization of abortion in 1973 up to date (2/8/19), 61.039 million babies have been aborted (killed) in the USA.
More than 1350 are killed every day in USA (more than 58,000 in the world). What are we doing about it?
As Christians, we must take good care of God’s creation in all aspects...
After considering God’s creation and the things He has done for man, David concluded his psalm with the same expression of praise with which he began:
“O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!
We may also say, “How great is our God!”
