Change is the road to joy
– We cannot experience joy, apart from change - Why is this so important to think, and pray through before we read study this passage?
What is the difference difference between trials and temptation?
– Trials can become temptations to think, say, and do things in sin.
– Temptations can be trials, and can make us sin. (; ) Breaking the commandment with even a temptation.
– We must remember that God is not away from us
– We must watch
– And think
– And pray
What is happening in us in temptation
– Our faith is being tested (; )
– What are ways that we are tempted? What are tempting situations that you have gone through?
– What those situations occur, how do you generally approach them?
Think on . Eve was tempted. What she thought was that God was withholding something that she deserved.
Think also about Joseph. How he was tempted by Potiphers wife. This was a test, not of his will power, but of his faith. Does he trust God? Does he think that everything that a God has given Him is good.
This is not a test of will power
This is a strengthening of faith.
When we are tempted, we are being tempted by our own desire. By our nature () How is this opposite of what the world thinks?
– We are tempted to reflect our nature, and not the nature of Christ.
– This desire, is called depravity, or sin.
Scott stated that the question is, temptation begs us to ask the question, “do we trust a God”
– Even these desires are covered by the blood of Christ, and forgiven. But they remain in us, and wage wars against our souls. ()
– Sin will be destroyed someday to such a totality, that we will no longer be tempted one day.
– The presence of sin, does not mean that we are not forgiven, but that we will be tempted....tempted to yield within us. ()
Scott states sinful desires within us are like lures that are that for fish. How do you view sinful desires?
What do these desires come from?
– But let us remember that, that it is not on the outside, but what is inside that causes us to sin. ()
– When we allow our thoughts, conceive, and manifest themselves it is sin....and it leads to death. ()
– A good part of the battle is
– Own what is happening within us.
– Own what is happening within others.
– We must know this, so that we know how we should pray for each other!
– We should pray
– We should love
– We should encourage
– We should exhort
– What we should not do is
– Deny
– Run from
What is God doing
– He is not tempting us
– He is giving us good gifts ()
– He is building our steadfastness of faith.
– Many times I have thought this to be my will power.
– This is not self help
– He is showing us how to live for the glory of God
– God has brought us for by the word of truth.
What are we to do?
– Understand that sin must be forgiven, before it can be fought against.
– Do I know the forgiveness of Jesus?
– How often do I remind myself of this.....aloud!
– This is first God’s grace towards us, and the. It is a power within us, as we pursue holiness.
– Understand what is happening inside of us
– Do I understand that I am in a battle?
– Are you ever not in a battle? ()
Reread, and remember Adoring God Chapter 2 on spiritual ware fare.
Accept the Bible’s Teaching, and Jesus teaching on desire.
Read how does Jesus hand temptation and desire?
– Sometime the desire is sinful ()
– It’s not just the act that is sinful, there are many times that the desire is sinful.
– If we do not put these desires to death, we will deny them.
– Fight at the level of desire.
– Fight the desire by calling it out within us
– We ourselves should call it out
– We should, in love, call it out in our brothers and sisters.
How do you call out sin in yourself, and also do you call out sin in others?
Martin Luther said, birds will fly overhead, but don’t let them next in your hair.
– Set the joy before
– Joy that God will deliver us
– Joy that God is keeping us
– Joy that God makes all things new
– Joy that God will show his glory
