Bigger, harrier, smellier!
The things God makes are wonderful, and says we were created in Christ to do good works.

As we talk about who we are today, we need to make sure we start there.
Many people who don’t share our Christian faith struggle with: “Who am I”? “What is my purpose”?
“Why am I here”?
These are great questions, but we have some pretty great answers.

Today we’ll have a short chat about our “outward appearance.”
Things are changing.
Our appearance will change in big and small ways all our lives.
We’ll notice those changes in our lives and in the lives of people around us.
A lot of people want to make a big deal out of how we look on the outside.
Clothes, hair style, who is taller, etc.
Also, we can “fool” each other by making others think we never have any problems or questions by always acting like we’ve “got it all figured out.”
Remember the story about Samuel going to see Jesse? (Tell Story)
The Lord looks at our heart!
That’s what is most important.
We don’t have a lot of control over what is happening with the changes in our body, but we do have control over our heart before God.

As the video showed, we’re all going through changes: getting bigger, getting hairier, and getting smellier!
Other adults: *What’s the coolest thing about being a guy?
I remember as I was growing up I really wanted to be a “man.”
I couldn’t wait to have some hair to shave, wear work shoes, maybe a tie (now I hate that!), wear some old spice, etc.
Now I now being a man is about being responsible before God about a few things:
My body:
I want to take care of myself!
Healthy!
As you notice all these changes, you’ll start to realize your body is a very amazing machine.
Going through puberty which is just a fancy word for all the physical changes you’ll experience is quite a process: Our body produces testosterone which is responsible for the bigger, hairier, smellier process.
It makes our penis grow bigger as well, and we begin to produce sperm which is part of the ingredients needed to make a baby with our wife.
It’s fairly common and normal for our penis to stiffen up sometimes for no reason.
That’s an erection.
It can happen during the day or at night.
When the sperm squirts out (again, sometimes at night) that’s an ejaculation.
These are the basic tools of fatherhood.
Guys, your dads and I want you to know a couple of things about this: all this is going to happen to all of you, and it happens at all different times.
It’s all normal, and it even happened to your dad!
I think I can speak for your dads when I say it’s OK at any time to come up to us and talk to us about any of this stuff.

Hey dads: *Can you relate to looking around and seeing other guys start to get taller or a deeper voice and wondering “when is that going to happen to me”? Anyone have a story about that?
Jamie Cohen had a huge beard in 6th grade!
Speaking of hair—it’s going to start growing.
All over.
Pirates of the Caribbean.
*Any dads have a hairy back?
You voice will grow deeper and may “crack or squeak” sometimes.
You get oily.
All of this brings oil and smell.
That’s why the video talked about the deodorant, etc.
*Guys, any questions or comments?
*Dads, what’s your favorite cologne or after shave?
My Emotions:
The Bible talks a lot about purity for us guys.
How can we keep our way pure?
Living according to God’s Word.
The Bible says to set an example for others in speech, life, love, faith, purity.
I think we have to make good choices about how many and what kind of TV shows and video games, movies, music, etc. we watch and listen to.
We have to start thinking about that ourselves.
Is this good for me?
Challenge to the dads about this.
Toby Mac concert the other night—awesome to see him read the Bible!

All these changes in our body will be physical as well as emotional.
We’ll start to look at our mom and dad in new and different ways.
We may begin to challenge their authority and test them more.
We may start to feel like we’re “grown up” so we can make our own decisions.
We may start to feel differently about girls.
I know, I know they’re “yucky” just sayin’!
But if our heart is pure and right before God, even during these times of transition we can live a life that he is proud of.
*Dads, where did you meet your wife?
Did you know right away she was the one for you?
Guys, God’s plan for us is that we’ll honor him with our bodies and our decisions that start in our minds and he’ll bless us with an awesome wife that we can share our lives with and maybe even have our own kids someday.
