OUT OF EGYPT
INTO WILDERNESS
INTO CANAAN
JERICHO
JERICHO
40 FEET ABOVE GROUND
IMPENATRABLE
INHABITANTS:
FEROCIOUS
BARBRIC
BURN SONS & DAUGHTERS
You shall not worship the Lord your God in that way, for every abominable thing that the Lord hates they have done for their gods, for they even burn their sons and their daughters in the fire to their gods.
DEUT
RUTHLESS
UNTIL....
UNTIL....
JOSHUA SHOWED UP
HIS ARMY MARCHED IN
THE BRICKS CRACKED AND BOULDERS BROKE
THE UNSTOPPABLE FORTRESS MET THE UNSTOPPABLE FORCE
JERICHO CRUMBLED
YOU WANT TO KNOW THE BEST PART!
JOSHUAS ARMY NEVER LIFTED A FINGER TOWARD THE WALL - GOD SHOWED UP AND GOD FOUGHT THE BATTLE.
GOD WILL DO THAT FOR YOU!
YOUR JERICHO
ANXIETY
INSECURITY
ADDICTION
PROPENSITY TO LIE OR GOSSIP
UNFORGIVENESS
REFUSAL TO SURRENDER
YOUR FEAR OF FACING THE NEXT STEP
SLIDE ATTITUDE THAT KEEPS YOU
JERICHO IS ANY ATTITUDE OR MINDSET THAT KEEPS YOU FROM JOY,PEACE, REST
IT IS BIG
EVIL
STANDING IN THE WAY OF YOUR FREEDOM
IN ORDER TO LIVE IN THE PROMISED LAND YOU HAVE TO FACE UP TO YOUR JERICHO
THE ENEMY IS REAL AND HE COMES TO KILL STEAL AND DESTROY
The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.
LAST WEEK WE SPOKE ABOUT AND HOW IT WARNS US THAT OUR FIGHT IS NOT AGAINST FELSH AND BLOOD BUT AGAINST THE PRINCIPALS OF DARKNESS.
REMEMBER WHEN WE WALK INTO CANAAN wE HAVE TO LEAVE THE EGYPT AND THE WILDERNESS BEHIND
WE HAVE TO CUT THE TIES
Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”
Now Jericho was shut up inside and outside because of the people of Israel. None went out, and none came in.
And the Lord said to Joshua, “See, I have given Jericho into your hand, with its king and mighty men of valor.
You shall march around the city, all the men of war going around the city once. Thus shall you do for six days.
Seven priests shall bear seven trumpets of rams’ horns before the ark. On the seventh day you shall march around the city seven times, and the priests shall blow the trumpets.
And when they make a long blast with the ram’s horn, when you hear the sound of the trumpet, then all the people shall shout with a great shout, and the wall of the city will fall down flat, and the people shall go up, everyone straight before him.”
So Joshua the son of Nun called the priests and said to them, “Take up the ark of the covenant and let seven priests bear seven trumpets of rams’ horns before the ark of the Lord.”
And he said to the people, “Go forward. March around the city and let the armed men pass on before the ark of the Lord.”
And just as Joshua had commanded the people, the seven priests bearing the seven trumpets of rams’ horns before the Lord went forward, blowing the trumpets, with the ark of the covenant of the Lord following them.
The armed men were walking before the priests who were blowing the trumpets, and the rear guard was walking after the ark, while the trumpets blew continually.
But Joshua commanded the people, “You shall not shout or make your voice heard, neither shall any word go out of your mouth, until the day I tell you to shout. Then you shall shout.”
Now Jericho was shut up inside and outside because of the people of Israel. None went out, and none came in.
And the Lord said to Joshua, “See, I have given Jericho into your hand, with its king and mighty men of valor.
The lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; indeed, I have a beautiful inheritance.
psalm 16:6
THE GIANTS ARE ALREADY OURS THE BATTLE HAS BEEN WON - DEATH HAS BEEN DEFEATED
SLIDE
“Pass through the midst of the camp and command the people, ‘Prepare your provisions, for within three days you are to pass over this Jordan to go in to take possession of the land that the Lord your God is giving you to possess.’ ”
;
After the death of Moses the servant of the Lord, the Lord said to Joshua the son of Nun, Moses’ assistant,
EMPHASIS IS ON TAKE POSSESSION
THE WALLS OF JERICHO
THE WALLS OF JERICHO
IS WHERE WE PICK IT UP
JOSHUA IS COMMANDING THE ARMY TO BE READY TO TAKE JERICHO
HE REMINDS HIS PEOPLE OF WHERE THEY HAVE COME FROM AND THAT THEY NEED TO GO INTO BATTLE
JOSHUA HAS 40 000 SOLDIERS READY TO DO BATTLE
OK WELL LETS GET OUR LADDERS READY AND SHARPEN OUR SWORDS AND BRUSH UP ON OUR TACTICS AND STRATEGIES
JOSHUA SAID NO - WE WRE NOT USING THE USUAL TACTICS WE HAVE A DIFFERENT APPROACH
JOSHUA KNEW FROM GOD THAT THIS WAS NOT SO MUCH A PHYSICAL BATTLE AS IT WAS A SPIRITUAL BATTLE
JOSHUA HAS NEW INSTRUCTIONS AND STRATEGY
NOT HIS OWN BUT GOD’S
And the Lord said to Joshua, “See, I have given Jericho into your hand, with its king and mighty men of valor.
Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil.
JERICHO WASA MIGHTY STRONGHOLD IN CANAAN
For though we walk in the flesh, we are not waging war according to the flesh.
For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds.
JUST LIKE JERICHO WE HAVE STRONGHOLDS
MINDSET OR ATTITUDE - PAUL DESCRIBES IT THIS WAY
We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ,
2 COR
PRETENTIONS -NIV
WARPED PHILOSOPHIES
A STEONGHOLD IS A FALSE PROMISE THAT DENIES GODS PROMISE
SLIDE - STRONGHOLD
IT ATTEMPTS TO MAGNIFY THE PROBLEM AND MINIMIZE GODS ABILITY TO SOLVE IT
DOES A STRONGHOLD HAVE A STRONGHOLD ON YOU?
GOD COULD NEVER FORGIVE ME - GUILT
I COULD NEVER FORGIVE THAT PERSON - RESENTMENT
BAD THINGS ALWAYS HAPPEN TO ME - SELF-PITY
I HAVE TO BE IN CHARGE - PRIDE
I DONT DESRVE TO BE LOVED - REJECTION
I’LL NEVER RECOVER - DEFEAT
I MUST BE GOOD OR GOD WILL REJECT ME - PERFORMANCE
I’M ONLY AS GOOD AS I LOOK - APPEARANCE
MY VALUE EQUALS MY POSSESSIONS - MATERIALISM
MANY TIMES WE DON’T RECOGNISE THESE ATTITUDES AS HAVING A STRONGHOLD IN OUR LIFE.
For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds.
SO HOW DO WE DEMOLISH THESE STRONGHOLDS?
BY KEEPING GOD IN THE CENTRE
WE KEEP HIM CENTRE BY USING THE WEAPONS
WORSHIP
SCRIPTURE
PRAYER
IS WHAT TELLS US HOW TO FIGHT THIS BATTLE
So Joshua the son of Nun called the priests and said to them, “Take up the ark of the covenant and let seven priests bear seven trumpets of rams’ horns before the ark of the Lord.”
The armed men were walking before the priests who were blowing the trumpets, and the rear guard was walking after the ark, while the trumpets blew continually.
THE ARK WAS IN THE MIDDLE
KEEPING GOD CENTRAL IS KEY
JOSHUA NEVER TOLD THEM THAT THE WALLS WOULD FALL IN ON THE SEVENTH DAY
THE ISRAELITES MUST HAVE BEEN WONDERING WHAT ON EARTH IS GOING ON AND HOW ARE WE GOING TO FIGHT THIS MIGHTY FORTRESS BY WALKING AROUND IT.
DON’T GIVE UP - KEEP WALKING WITH YOUR EYES ON JESUS AND TRUST HIM FOR THE OUTCOME - EVEN WHEN WE DON’T SEE HOW
TODAY MAY BE THE DAY THAT YOUR WALLS FALL DOWN WE DON’T KNOW BUT WHAT WE DO KNOW IS THAT IT DID NOT HAPPEN AFTER THE FIRST TIME OF OBEDIENCE
THEY HAD TO DO THIS FOR 6 DAYS AND THEN ON DAY 7
On the seventh day they rose early, at the dawn of day, and marched around the city in the same manner seven times. It was only on that day that they marched around the city seven times.
And at the seventh time, when the priests had blown the trumpets, Joshua said to the people, “Shout, for the Lord has given you the city.
So the people shouted, and the trumpets were blown. As soon as the people heard the sound of the trumpet, the people shouted a great shout, and the wall fell down flat, so that the people went up into the city, every man straight before him, and they captured the city.
On the seventh day they rose early, at the dawn of day, and marched around the city in the same manner seven times. It was only on that day that they marched around the city seven times.
,
SO YOU SEE THE RUINS PROVIDED THE STEPPING STONES THEY NEEDED TO GET INTO THE CITY IN ORDER TO DEFEAT IT’
OUR FAITH GROWS EACH TIME WE TRUST AND KEEP OUR EYE ON JESUS TO DO BATTLE FOR US
THE NEXT STEPS:
SLIDE
STUFF
STUFF
AS WE CONTINUE TO READ ABOUT THE CONQUESTS WE SEE THAT THE VERY NEXT BATTLE IS A LITTLE BIT OF A DISASTER FOR JOSHUA - WHY?
THE TOWN OF AI IS A LOT SMALLER THAN JERICHO - EASY PEASY
BUT GOD GIVES VERY SPECIFIC INSTRUCTIONS
But you, keep yourselves from the things devoted to destruction, lest when you have devoted them you take any of the devoted things and make the camp of Israel a thing for destruction and bring trouble upon it.
But all silver and gold, and every vessel of bronze and iron, are holy to the Lord; they shall go into the treasury of the Lord.”
ENTER ACHAN
HE KEPT SOME OF THE STUFF FOR HIMSELF
THE RESULT WAS THAT THERE WERE CASUALTIES IN THE CAMP THAT DAY FOR THE ISRAELITES
GOD HAS SUPPLIED SO MUCH FOR THE HEBREWS AT THIS STAGE IF WE TAKE STOCK
OUT OF EGYPT
JOSHUA 6:
INTO WILDERNESS - PROVIDED FOOD AND CLOTHES AND HEALTH
OVER THE JORDAN
DEFEATED JERICHO
Joshua laid an oath on them at that time, saying, “Cursed before the Lord be the man who rises up and rebuilds this city, Jericho. “At the cost of his firstborn shall he lay its foundation, and at the cost of his youngest son shall he set up its gates.”
GOD WAS ENOUGH - THIS WAS THE MESSAGE GOD WAS SENDING TO THE PEOPLE
EVEN TODAY HE IS ENOUGH FORUS
So the Lord was with Joshua, and his fame was in all the land.
THE BLING TAKES OUR EYES OFF THE KING
So about three thousand men went up there from the people. And they fled before the men of Ai,
and the men of Ai killed about thirty-six of their men and chased them before the gate as far as Shebarim and struck them at the descent. And the hearts of the people melted and became as water.
WHAT THE ...
HOW CAN WE HAVE JUST BEATEN JERICHO AND HERE WE CANT EVEN STAND AGAINST THIS ARMY
And Joshua said, “Alas, O Lord God, why have you brought this people over the Jordan at all, to give us into the hands of the Amorites, to destroy us? Would that we had been content to dwell beyond the Jordan!
JOASHUA 7:10
The Lord said to Joshua, “Get up! Why have you fallen on your face?
GOD SAID TO JOSHUA IT WAS NOT THAT THE ARMY WAS FORMIDABLE
YOU PEOPLE WERE DISOBEDIENT
TRUST GOD AND GOD ALONE
YET
JUDGMENT WAS SWIFT PUNISHEMNT STIFF
ACHAN AND HIS FAMILY WERE DESTROYED
WE ALLOW STUFF AND ATTITUDES TO DESTROY OUR RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD AND HE IS NOT ABLE TO BLESS US
WE SEE THIS VERY SAME BEHAVIOUR IN THE NEW TESTAMENT CHURCH
But a man named Ananias, with his wife Sapphira, sold a piece of property,
and with his wife’s knowledge he kept back for himself some of the proceeds and brought only a part of it and laid it at the apostles’ feet.
But Peter said, “Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and to keep back for yourself part of the proceeds of the land?
While it remained unsold, did it not remain your own? And after it was sold, was it not at your disposal? Why is it that you have contrived this deed in your heart? You have not lied to man but to God.”
When Ananias heard these words, he fell down and breathed his last. And great fear came upon all who heard of it.
The young men rose and wrapped him up and carried him out and buried him.
After an interval of about three hours his wife came in, not knowing what had happened.
And Peter said to her, “Tell me whether you sold the land for so much.” And she said, “Yes, for so much.”
But Peter said to her, “How is it that you have agreed together to test the Spirit of the Lord? Behold, the feet of those who have buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out.”
Immediately she fell down at his feet and breathed her last. When the young men came in they found her dead, and they carried her out and buried her beside her husband.
And great fear came upon the whole church and upon all who heard of these things.
Now many signs and wonders were regularly done among the people by the hands of the apostles. And they were all together in Solomon’s Portico.
None of the rest dared join them, but the people held them in high esteem.
And more than ever believers were added to the Lord, multitudes of both men and women,
so that they even carried out the sick into the streets and laid them on cots and mats, that as Peter came by at least his shadow might fall on some of them.
The people also gathered from the towns around Jerusalem, bringing the sick and those afflicted with unclean spirits, and they were all healed.
But the high priest rose up, and all who were with him (that is, the party of the Sadducees), and filled with jealousy
they arrested the apostles and put them in the public prison.
But during the night an angel of the Lord opened the prison doors and brought them out, and said,
“Go and stand in the temple and speak to the people all the words of this Life.”
And when they heard this, they entered the temple at daybreak and began to teach. Now when the high priest came, and those who were with him, they called together the council, all the senate of the people of Israel, and sent to the prison to have them brought.
But when the officers came, they did not find them in the prison, so they returned and reported,
“We found the prison securely locked and the guards standing at the doors, but when we opened them we found no one inside.”
Now when the captain of the temple and the chief priests heard these words, they were greatly perplexed about them, wondering what this would come to.
And someone came and told them, “Look! The men whom you put in prison are standing in the temple and teaching the people.”
Then the captain with the officers went and brought them, but not by force, for they were afraid of being stoned by the people.
And when they had brought them, they set them before the council. And the high priest questioned them,
saying, “We strictly charged you not to teach in this name, yet here you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching, and you intend to bring this man’s blood upon us.”
But Peter and the apostles answered, “We must obey God rather than men.
The God of our fathers raised Jesus, whom you killed by hanging him on a tree.
God exalted him at his right hand as Leader and Savior, to give repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins.
And we are witnesses to these things, and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey him.”
When they heard this, they were enraged and wanted to kill them.
But a Pharisee in the council named Gamaliel, a teacher of the law held in honor by all the people, stood up and gave orders to put the men outside for a little while.
And he said to them, “Men of Israel, take care what you are about to do with these men.
For before these days Theudas rose up, claiming to be somebody, and a number of men, about four hundred, joined him. He was killed, and all who followed him were dispersed and came to nothing.
After him Judas the Galilean rose up in the days of the census and drew away some of the people after him. He too perished, and all who followed him were scattered.
So in the present case I tell you, keep away from these men and let them alone, for if this plan or this undertaking is of man, it will fail;
but if it is of God, you will not be able to overthrow them. You might even be found opposing God!” So they took his advice,
and when they had called in the apostles, they beat them and charged them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go.
Then they left the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer dishonor for the name.
And every day, in the temple and from house to house, they did not cease teaching and preaching that the Christ is Jesus.

IN BOTH OF THESE STORIES WE ARE REMINDED BY THEIR GRAVES TO TAKE CARE
SLIDE - YOUR TENT
WHAT WILL YOUR TENT REVEAL IF IT WAS SEARCHED
As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy.
GOD IS NOT SAYING WE CANT HAVE ANYTHING OR ENJOY THE STUFF YOU HAVE - HE IS SAYING DON’T PUT YOUR TRUST IN IT, IT IS NOT TRUSTWORTHY.
70 % of lottery winners go bankrupt in 5 years of the win
MANY SPORTS PEOPLE DO THE SAME
The reward for humility and fear of the Lord is riches and honor and life.
GOD NEVER SAID YOU CANT HAVE HE SAID BE CAREFUL WITH WHAT YOU HAVE AND HOW IT CONTROLS YOU!
A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches, and favor is better than silver or gold.
The rich and the poor meet together; the Lord is the Maker of them all.
The prudent sees danger and hides himself, but the simple go on and suffer for it.
The reward for humility and fear of the Lord is riches and honor and life.
Thorns and snares are in the way of the crooked; whoever guards his soul will keep far from them.
Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.
The rich rules over the poor, and the borrower is the slave of the lender.
Whoever sows injustice will reap calamity, and the rod of his fury will fail.
Whoever has a bountiful eye will be blessed, for he shares his bread with the poor.
Drive out a scoffer, and strife will go out, and quarreling and abuse will cease.
He who loves purity of heart, and whose speech is gracious, will have the king as his friend.
The eyes of the Lord keep watch over knowledge, but he overthrows the words of the traitor.
The sluggard says, “There is a lion outside! I shall be killed in the streets!”
The mouth of forbidden women is a deep pit; he with whom the Lord is angry will fall into it.
Folly is bound up in the heart of a child, but the rod of discipline drives it far from him.
Whoever oppresses the poor to increase his own wealth, or gives to the rich, will only come to poverty.
Incline your ear, and hear the words of the wise, and apply your heart to my knowledge,
for it will be pleasant if you keep them within you, if all of them are ready on your lips.
That your trust may be in the Lord, I have made them known to you today, even to you.
Have I not written for you thirty sayings of counsel and knowledge,
to make you know what is right and true, that you may give a true answer to those who sent you?
Do not rob the poor, because he is poor, or crush the afflicted at the gate,
for the Lord will plead their cause and rob of life those who rob them.
Make no friendship with a man given to anger, nor go with a wrathful man,
lest you learn his ways and entangle yourself in a snare.
Be not one of those who give pledges, who put up security for debts.
If you have nothing with which to pay, why should your bed be taken from under you?
Do not move the ancient landmark that your fathers have set.
Do you see a man skillful in his work? He will stand before kings; he will not stand before obscure men.
