Dwelling Place

What is your dream place? Maybe you have already found it, or still pursuing it.
What does it look like?
Every house that we live in, until we get our dream home will have flaws. We will always find something wrong with what we live in.
Today we are going to look at what scripture has to share with us on our earthly and heavenly dwelling.
2 Corinthians 5:1–4 ESV
1 For we know that if the tent that is our earthly home is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. 2 For in this tent we groan, longing to put on our heavenly dwelling, 3 if indeed by putting it on we may not be found naked. 4 For while we are still in this tent, we groan, being burdened—not that we would be unclothed, but that we would be further clothed, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life.
Each one of us that has accepted Christ as Lord and Savior hold to a great hope.
That this is not our home. That there is something better.
Because of sin, our earthly body is decaying day by day. We age, we get new aches and pains, our body begins to decay more and more each day we life.
1 Corinthians
1 Corinthians 15:42–44 ESV
42 So is it with the resurrection of the dead. What is sown is perishable; what is raised is imperishable. 43 It is sown in dishonor; it is raised in glory. It is sown in weakness; it is raised in power. 44 It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body. If there is a natural body, there is also a spiritual body.
Because we know that this is not the end, that there is something better. Our body groans to have what it was originally made for.
Romans 8:22–24 ESV
22 For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now. 23 And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies. 24 For in this hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what he sees?
What is our hope, our guarantee that there is something better?
2 Corinthians 5:5 ESV
5 He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who has given us the Spirit as a guarantee.
2 Corinthians 5:
Ephesians 1:13–14 ESV
13 In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, 14 who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory.
John 14:26 ESV
26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.
The Holy Spirit, leads us, teaches us, and is our guarantee that there is more then just this life.
2 Corinthians 5:6–9 ESV
6 So we are always of good courage. We know that while we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord, 7 for we walk by faith, not by sight. 8 Yes, we are of good courage, and we would rather be away from the body and at home with the Lord. 9 So whether we are at home or away, we make it our aim to please him.
This was one of Pauls greatest struggles. He was tired, worn out, and ready to go home.
Philippians 1:21–26 ESV
21 For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain. 22 If I am to live in the flesh, that means fruitful labor for me. Yet which I shall choose I cannot tell. 23 I am hard pressed between the two. My desire is to depart and be with Christ, for that is far better. 24 But to remain in the flesh is more necessary on your account. 25 Convinced of this, I know that I will remain and continue with you all, for your progress and joy in the faith, 26 so that in me you may have ample cause to glory in Christ Jesus, because of my coming to you again.
Paul knew which was better. He was eager to go home to the Father, but knew no matter what struggles lied ahead, he still had work to do.
Just as we do. Until the Lord calls us home, we are to strive daily to do the work that has been called for each of us.
How does Paul end him message? Reminding the church and us that all things will come to completion.
2 Corinthians 5:10 ESV
10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive what is due for what he has done in the body, whether good or evil.
Ecclesiates 12:14
Ecclesiastes 12:14 ESV
14 For God will bring every deed into judgment, with every secret thing, whether good or evil.
Talk about the difference between believers and non-believers when it comes to judgment.
Revelation 21:3–4 ESV
3 And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. 4 He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.”
Church we should look forward daily to what is waiting for us. Remind ourselves of the hope and home we have with Christ. But as Paul did, remind ourselves each day that as we are here, we have a job to do.
Do the calling given to you, teach one another, encourage one another, and proclaim the gospel that all may know the hope in Christ.
