Discipleship to distinction
Discipleship to distinction
This section has everything a good storyline needs. A bold claim, a great promise, an astonishing display and an order to comply.
Jesus has been teaching about the cost of discipleship (Mk8:34-35) which included promised suffering (MK8:31). Today from promised suffering to displayed glory with promised glory in the future.
34 And He summoned the crowd with His disciples, and said to them, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me. 35 “For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake and the gospel’s will save it.
Now a very significant verse to l
Denying self is not self-denial, but denying self, for Jesus it included suffering
31 And He began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again.
What did Jesus say was going to happen (v.31)?
We know haw that went over, Peter in a worldly way tried to combat an uncomfortable reality that was to come.
That leads us to another reality statement.
Jesus makes a bold claim, promise (Mk8:38)
38 “For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will also be ashamed of him when He comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels.”
31 And He began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again.
What is Jesus warning? What is Jesus bold claim and promise?
Jesus claim of the return for the day of judgment when returns with the angels may I quickly note a couple of verses
27 “For the Son of Man is going to come in the glory of His Father with His angels, and will then repay every man according to his deeds.
and
31 “But when the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the angels with Him, then He will sit on His glorious throne. 32 “All the nations will be gathered before Him; and He will separate them from one another, as the shepherd separates the sheep from the goats;
Jesus makes a prophesy, promise to the Apostles there with Him (Mk9:1)
Jesus makes a prophesy, promise to the Apostles there with Him (Mk9:1)
1 And Jesus was saying to them, “Truly I say to you, there are some of those who are standing here who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God after it has come with power.”
I will go back and talk about this verse in a few minutes but this is one of those places the bible seems to have a poor break in chapters for (8:38 and 9:1 go with each other)
Jesus then displays His glory to them to give power to the claim (Mk9:2-7)
They see the glory of His sinlessness (Mk9:3)
They see the glory of His Sonship (Mk9:4-5, 7)
They see the glory of His suffering (MK9:7)
So now may we look at the passage then we will break it down
Beholding the kingdom (Mk9:1)
27 “For the Son of Man is going to come in the glory of His Father with His angels, and will then repay every man according to his deeds.
Beholding the majesty of Jesus (Mk9:2-6)
and
31 “But when the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the angels with Him, then He will sit on His glorious throne. 32 “All the nations will be gathered before Him; and He will separate them from one another, as the shepherd separates the sheep from the goats;
Beholding the majesty of the kingdom (Mk9:7)
1 And Jesus was saying to them, “Truly I say to you, there are some of those who are standing here who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God after it has come with power.” 2 Six days later, Jesus took with Him Peter and James and John, and brought them up on a high mountain by themselves. And He was transfigured before them;
2 Six days later, Jesus took with Him Peter and James and John, and brought them up on a high mountain by themselves. And He was transfigured before them; 3 and His garments became radiant and exceedingly white, as no launderer on earth can whiten them.
4 Elijah appeared to them along with Moses; and they were talking with Jesus. 5 Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good for us to be here; let us make three tabernacles, one for You, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”
6 For he did not know what to answer; for they became terrified. 7 Then a cloud formed, overshadowing them, and a voice came out of the cloud, “This is My beloved Son, listen to Him!”
What did you see, what did you notice, what sticks out to you?
Beholding the Kingdom
Beholding the Kingdom
Jesus makes a very bold statement to support his claim about the coming day of judgment (Mk8:38) he brings in our verse here (Mk9:1) to support the claim.
1 And He said to them, “Assuredly, I say to you that there are some standing here who will not taste death till they see the kingdom of God present with power.”
Beholding, seeing the kingdom come with power (MK9:1)
Beholding, seeing the Son of man coming in His kingdom (Mt16:28)
28 “Truly I say to you, there are some of those who are standing here who will not taste death until they see the Son of Man coming in His kingdom.”
So 9:1 - kingdom of God with power
16:28: Son of man coming in His kingdom
Beholding, seeing the kingdom of God (Lk9:27)
27 “But I say to you truthfully, there are some of those standing here who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God.”
Now in the luke passage it too mentions the kingdom of God
Question: in the three passages there is another common thread, what is it?
Will not taste death (expand on this)
Power, let’s now discuss the power, for there have been many interpretations of what that means, so I will just present them you can draw your own conclusion
Kingdom coming in power
Jesus transfiguration on the mount (Mt9:2-8)
Jesus resurrection and ascension (1Cor15:4)
Outpouring of Holy Spirit on Pentecost (Act2:2-4)
Destruction of Jerusalem in A.D. 70
Finally, the day of judgement (Mk8:38)
Keep this is mind as we look at this, Jesus had been teaching about discipleship and His suffering that was to happen, right after He makes the bold statement (9:1) and then that leads us to (9:2); so, contextually it appears Jesus is speaking of something that was to happen immediately. Look at one more passage then will move on.
28 Some eight days after these sayings, He took along Peter and John and James, and went up on the mountain to pray.
28 Some eight days after these sayings, He took along Peter and John and James, and went up on the mountain to pray.
After saying these things is what Luke records, so this is directly after that the transfiguration occurs, so now lets look at that.
Beholding the Majesty of Jesus
Beholding the Majesty of Jesus
We are called to behold and this passage today we are going to behold the majesty of Jesus, the majesty of His kingdom.
So to behold is an old word, but it is used 1177 times in the Bible (NASB) and 164 of them are in the N.T. so what does the word mean?
be·hold
Dictionary result for behold: verb or present participle: beholding see or observe (a thing or person, especially a remarkable or impressive one).

Heavenly Fathers says to behold Jesus (Mt3:16-17)
16 After being baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove and lighting on Him, 17 and behold, a voice out of the heavens said, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well-pleased.”
As we look at these following verses pick out what you behold
Beheld Jesus as He was transfigured (Mk9:2-3; Mt17:2; Lk9:29)
2 Six days later, Jesus took with Him Peter and James and John, and brought them up on a high mountain by themselves. And He was transfigured before them;
2 Six days later, Jesus took with Him Peter and James and John, and brought them up on a high mountain by themselves. And He was transfigured before them; 3 and His garments became radiant and exceedingly white, as no launderer on earth can whiten them.
transfigured the Greek word metamorphoo where we get metamorphosis, which means to change, transfigure, transform.
What did you see, radiant white, as no one could do
2 And He was transfigured before them; and His face shone like the sun, and His garments became as white as light.
Face shone like the sun, garments white as light
29 And while He was praying, the appearance of His face became different, and His clothing became white and gleaming.
white and gleaming, if you saw these things you would behold wouldn’t you?
Peter states they saw His majesty (2Pt1:16)
16 For we did not follow cleverly devised tales when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of His majesty.
Peter states they saw His majesty (2Pt1:16)
Behold the radiance of His glory (Heb1:1-3)
1 God, after He spoke long ago to the fathers in the prophets in many portions and in many ways,
1 God, after He spoke long ago to the fathers in the prophets in many portions and in many ways, 2 in these last days has spoken to us in His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the world.
3 And He is the radiance of His glory and the exact representation of His nature, and upholds all things by the word of His power. When He had made purification of sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,
2 in these last days has spoken to us in His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the world. 3 And He is the radiance of His glory and the exact representation of His nature, and upholds all things by the word of His power. Beholding the majesty evidenced by presence of Moses and Elijah (Mk9:4 Lk9:30-31)
4 Elijah appeared to them along with Moses; and they were talking with Jesus.
We know they were talking with Jesus but there is more we can learn too.
30 And behold, two men were talking with Him; and they were Moses and Elijah, 31 who, appearing in glory, were speaking of His departure which He was about to accomplish at Jerusalem.
What do you notice, what do you learn about what they were talking about?
Mark is still keeping everything in context isn’t he? Going back to the suffering and the death, resurrection noted back in Mk8:31.
Beholding was not lost on Peter, after the apostles woke up (Mk9:5-6; Lk9:32-33)
5 Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good for us to be here; let us make three tabernacles, one for You, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” 6 For he did not know what to answer; for they became terrified.
oh, hold on, i said after they woke up
32 Now Peter and his companions had been overcome with sleep; but when they were fully awake, they saw His glory and the two men standing with Him.
32 Now Peter and his companions had been overcome with sleep; but when they were fully awake, they saw His glory and the two men standing with Him. 33 And as these were leaving Him, Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it is good for us to be here; let us make three tabernacles: one for You, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah”—not realizing what he was saying.
and then then finish it off
33 And as these were leaving Him, Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it is good for us to be here; let us make three tabernacles: one for You, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah”—not realizing what he was saying.
So here you are sleeping and you awake and see the glory of God and the manifestation of Gods power before you in by the appearance of Moses and Elijah. Personally I think these two are for very specific reasons . Moses represents the epitome of the Law and Elijah of the prophets
We still don’t have the full picture here, Peter thinks it is good to be there, but when he has the bigger, better picture, it will be great! Though won’t know until after the resurrection and ascension.
Beheld the majesty of coming kingdom
Beheld the majesty of coming kingdom
If they were terrified before (Mk9:6) this next thing would really blow their sandals off their feet.
Beheld the majesty by voice from heaven (Mk9:7; Mt17:6-7; Heb1:1-2; Mt28:18; Lk24:26; Mk9:9)
7 Then a cloud formed, overshadowing them, and a voice came out of the cloud, “This is My beloved Son, listen to Him!”
6 When the disciples heard this, they fell face down to the ground and were terrified. 7 And Jesus came to them and touched them and said, “Get up, and do not be afraid.”
In these verses, especially now the Matthew one, what do you see, notice?
While Peter was still speaking a not so still voice came from heaven and a cloud overshadowed them.
Cloud represented the presence of God and that frightened Israel when they were in the wilderness (Exo13:21; Exp19:9 and Exo20:18-19) - - - - these are not on your outline I just added them.
18 All the people perceived the thunder and the lightning flashes and the sound of the trumpet and the mountain smoking; and when the people saw it, they trembled and stood at a distance. 19 Then they said to Moses, “Speak to us yourself and we will listen; but let not God speak to us, or we will die.”
Well they were not dead were they, but they were on their face (see Mt17:6-7 we just read)
6 When the disciples heard this, they fell face down to the ground and were terrified. 7 And Jesus came to them and touched them and said, “Get up, and do not be afraid.”
What was the command given by God (Mk9:7)?
So, this opens up how God was going to speak in those days and people should listen. No longer was He going to speak through the Law (Moses) or the Prophets (Elijah) but through the Son (Heb1:1-2; we already read) in whom all authority has been given (Mt28:18)
This authority, rule and reign would transpire after Christ’s suffering, death, resurrection and ascension
26 “Was it not necessary for the Christ to suffer these things and to enter into His glory?”
Hence why they were told not to say anything, they did not know everything, did not understand everything. But here is the verse.
9 As they were coming down from the mountain, He gave them orders not to relate to anyone what they had seen, until the Son of Man rose from the dead.
Beheld the majesty by the absence of Moses and Elijah now (Mk9:8)
So after hearing the voice, the command and being comforted by Jesus they look up and only Jesus is there
8 All at once they looked around and saw no one with them anymore, except Jesus alone.
This can symbolize that HE is all that is needed, no longer the Law for He fulfilled the Law and the prophets. He is not a prophet, He is The Prophet sent from Heaven.
Drawing a conclusion
Drawing a conclusion
We have looked at, we have beheld the mount of transfiguration now you will have to draw a conclusion on the significance.
Personally in looking at this I come to this conclusion.
In context this is the fulfillment of what Jesus promised in Mk9:1)
1 And Jesus was saying to them, “Truly I say to you, there are some of those who are standing here who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God after it has come with power.”
Some saw the kingdom come in power
Some saw the Son of Man coming in His kingdom
Some saw the kingdom of God (rule, reign, authority)
all this is just a glimpse of what they were going to see, going to go through with His handing over, death, burial, resurrection and ascension looming before them
Some scriptures to consider, to behold
Rule, reign, authority were displayed (Eph1:20-23; 1Pt3:22)
20 which He brought about in Christ, when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, 21 far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come.
22 And He put all things in subjection under His feet, and gave Him as head over all things to the church, 23 which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all.
All authority, power, dominion given to Him
22 who is at the right hand of God, having gone into heaven, after angels and authorities and powers had been subjected to Him.
Everything is subjected to Him, want it or no.
Judgment has been given to Him and that day is coming (Act17:30-31; 2Pt1:17)
For there are no excuses
30 “Therefore having overlooked the times of ignorance, God is now declaring to men that all people everywhere should repent, 31 because He has fixed a day in which He will judge the world in righteousness through a Man whom He has appointed, having furnished proof to all men by raising Him from the dead.”
The Fathers majestic glory displays the majestic glory and authority of the Son
17 For when He received honor and glory from God the Father, such an utterance as this was made to Him by the Majestic Glory, “This is My beloved Son with whom I am well-pleased”—
So, to sum it up, may the words of the Father ring true to us.
7 Then a cloud formed, overshadowing them, and a voice came out of the cloud, “This is My beloved Son, listen to Him!”
Mk9:8
May we listen to the Father as He spoke through the Son and we hold that in our hands, may we be obedient to the Son who has all authority. May we behold His Majesty!
