Trusting the Savior

Matthew 4:22 KJV 1900
22 And they immediately left the ship and their father, and followed him.
We can fill what happened by looking at Luke Chapter 5
Matt 4:22
Luke 5:9–11 KJV 1900
9 For he was astonished, and all that were with him, at the draught of the fishes which they had taken: 10 And so was also James, and John, the sons of Zebedee, which were partners with Simon. And Jesus said unto Simon, Fear not; from henceforth thou shalt catch men. 11 And when they had brought their ships to land, they forsook all, and followed him.
Luke 5.9-
What will it take for you to follow Him!
There are three places in the gospel records there appears to be a call. . In the synoptic gospels (Matthew and Luke) the call is at Capernaum of Galilee. In John
They are at the Jordan river at Jesus’s Baptism.
John call is different than Matthew, Mark, and Luke’s accounts of Jesus’ calling of the apostles. John actually referred to a different circumstance altogether.
John records Peter and Andrew’s first meeting with the Christ.
The synoptists, however, testify of a later meetings, when Jesus called them at the Sea of Galilee to become “fishers of men.”
In John, “[t]he disciples of John [the Baptizer—EL] recognize the Messiah and spontaneously attach themselves to him” (Morris, p. 136).
In the synoptics, the disciples clearly were called to begin a life of service as apostles (; ; )
That being said lets look this morning at what led up to the call!
What was it that Peter and the other fisherman saw that moved them so much to follow this man called Jesus?
Growing up I heard the gospel.
But it was divine circumstances that brought me to the Lord...
What was the even the holy spirit used to influence you to be a follower of Christ
Many say the disciples became followers of Christ at the Baptism of John and here were called to be a disciples.
I think in John they showed an interest to be associated with Christ it was here that they left all to follow Christ...
Obedience brought conviction and also trust!

Luke 4:31–37 KJV 1900
31 And came down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and taught them on the sabbath days. 32 And they were astonished at his doctrine: for his word was with power. 33 And in the synagogue there was a man, which had a spirit of an unclean devil, and cried out with a loud voice, 34 Saying, Let us alone; what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art; the Holy One of God. 35 And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace, and come out of him. And when the devil had thrown him in the midst, he came out of him, and hurt him not. 36 And they were all amazed, and spake among themselves, saying, What a word is this! for with authority and power he commandeth the unclean spirits, and they come out. 37 And the fame of him went out into every place of the country round about.

Luke 4:38–41 KJV 1900
38 And he arose out of the synagogue, and entered into Simon’s house. And Simon’s wife’s mother was taken with a great fever; and they besought him for her. 39 And he stood over her, and rebuked the fever; and it left her: and immediately she arose and ministered unto them. 40 Now when the sun was setting, all they that had any sick with divers diseases brought them unto him; and he laid his hands on every one of them, and healed them. 41 And devils also came out of many, crying out, and saying, Thou art Christ the Son of God. And he rebuking them suffered them not to speak: for they knew that he was Christ.

Luke 5:1–7 KJV 1900
1 And it came to pass, that, as the people pressed upon him to hear the word of God, he stood by the lake of Gennesaret, 2 And saw two ships standing by the lake: but the fishermen were gone out of them, and were washing their nets. 3 And he entered into one of the ships, which was Simon’s, and prayed him that he would thrust out a little from the land. And he sat down, and taught the people out of the ship. 4 Now when he had left speaking, he said unto Simon, Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught. 5 And Simon answering said unto him, Master, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing: nevertheless at thy word I will let down the net. 6 And when they had this done, they inclosed a great multitude of fishes: and their net brake. 7 And they beckoned unto their partners, which were in the other ship, that they should come and help them. And they came, and filled both the ships, so that they began to sink.

What you have seen
What you have experienced
What Christians have said
Think about it
Jesus was in Capernaum teaching in the synagogue
Healing and all kinks of noise was being made
Then comes Jesus down to the lake
Peter is tired
Bad night caught nothing
A huge crowd had showed up down by the lake.....
What Peter and others has seen and witnessed would have a profound effect on what happens next.
My God works through circumstances, people and events to bring me to Him!
Illustration - NJ we met some really normal people that had kids that were sold out to the Lord.
They were like us
They lived in our neighborhood
They had radically changed lives and recieved Christ

Matthew 4:23–25 KJV 1900
23 And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the people. 24 And his fame went throughout all Syria: and they brought unto him all sick people that were taken with divers diseases and torments, and those which were possessed with devils, and those which were lunatick, and those that had the palsy; and he healed them. 25 And there followed him great multitudes of people from Galilee, and from Decapolis, and from Jerusalem, and from Judaea, and from beyond Jordan.

Peter was obedient
vs 1-3 The Lord used Peter’s boat as a pulpit from which to teach the multitude. If we yield all our property and possessions to the Savior, it is wonderful how He uses them, and rewards us too
The acoustical properties of this area are remarkable. The still water acts as a sounding board, a loudspeaker. It picks up a speaker’s voice and throws it up the beach and the hillside so that everyone can hear what is being said even when it is spoken in a conversational tone of voice. The Lord did not have to raise His voice to be heard by one and all.
We can picture Peter, pleased and proud that the great preacher Himself should be sitting there in his boat, His voice ringing out to one and all. Peter’s companions were nearby, busily mending their nets with their hands while listening to Jesus with all of their ears.
Peter thought that he knew more about fishing than Jesus did. “Let down the nets?
Nonsense, there’s nothing there to catch. We ought to know; we’ve fished over this corner of the lake all night.
Still, just to humor You, Lord, I’ll let down a net.” Peter’s experienced hand felt the astounding response at once. Suddenly, the net, wholly inadequate for the task, was full to overflowing. Peter still knew it all. He summoned his partners, who by now had launched the other boat, and they drew alongside.
God provided - it may not make since
Fishing in the heat of the day
Fishing that goes against all you experience
But if you will trust me I will provide your needs even if it seems difficult....
Christ was showing Peter and the other disciples leave it all follow me and i will give you more fish than you can handle.
Illustration - when God tells you to launch out into the deep .... it may not make since but he will provide.
2 Corinthians 9:8 KJV 1900
8 And God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work:
Matthew 6:33 KJV 1900
33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.
Philippians 4:19 KJV 1900
19 But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.
This was encouragement to the future disciples that if they obey He will miraculously provide.

III The Conviction

Luke 5:8–10 KJV 1900
8 When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, Depart from me; for I am a sinful man, O Lord. 9 For he was astonished, and all that were with him, at the draught of the fishes which they had taken: 10 And so was also James, and John, the sons of Zebedee, which were partners with Simon. And Jesus said unto Simon, Fear not; from henceforth thou shalt catch men.
luke 5.810
Look at those who were there - James, John and Peter
wow - Christ
This vision of the glory of the Lord Jesus produced in Peter an overpowering sense of his own unworthiness. It was so with Isaiah (6:5); it is so with all who see the King in His beauty.
Isaiah 6:5 KJV 1900
5 Then said I, Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts.
The surrender

IV The Surrender

luke 5.111
Luke 5:11 KJV 1900
11 And when they had brought their ships to land, they forsook all, and followed him.
It was while Peter was engaged in his ordinary employment that Christ called him to be a fisher of men.
While you are waiting for guidance, do whatever your hand finds to do. Do it with all your might. Do it heartily as to the Lord. Just as a rudder guides a ship only when it is in motion, so God guides men when they too are in motion.[1]
Obedience brought a blessing of fish and an understanding of unworthiness.
