For the choir director: on the Gittith. A psalm of David. Lord, our Lord, how magnificent is your name throughout the earth! You have covered the heavens with your majesty. From the mouths of infants and nursing babies, you have established a stronghold on account of your adversaries in order to silence the enemy and the avenger. When I observe your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you set in place, what is a human being that you remember him, a son of man that you look after him? You made him little less than God and crowned him with glory and honor. You made him ruler over the works of your hands; you put everything under his feet: all the sheep and oxen, as well as the animals in the wild, the birds of the sky, and the fish of the sea that pass through the currents of the seas. Lord, our Lord, how magnificent is your name throughout the earth!

The distinction between God and Humanity should never be diminished.
When I observe your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you set in place, what is a human being that you remember him, a son of man that you look after him?

WHAT DOES SCRIPTURE TEACH US ABOUT HUMANITY?
demonstrates the Aseity (independence) of God.
“In the beginning God created…” ()
conveys the exceptionality of humanity.
“So God created man in His own image; He created him in the image of God; He created them male and female.” ()
As “image bearers” we are:
Different than the rest of creation.
Able to exhibit the communicable attributes of God.
Given a purposeful existence.
Endowed with intrinsic value.
explains the corruption of humanity and its enduring effects.
“All of us have become like something unclean, and all our righteous acts are like a polluted garment; all of us wither like a leaf, and our iniquities carry us away like the wind. No one calls on your name, striving to take hold of you. For you have hidden your face from us and made us melt because of our iniquity.” ()
The Gospels reveal God’s redemptive work in Jesus on the cross.
“For God loved the world in this way: He gave His one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through Him. Anyone who believes in Him is not condemned…” ()
discloses the divine plan for humanity to experience intimacy with the Creator and reclaimed purpose for existence through the mediation of Christ and the intervention of the Holy Spirit.
“Now since the children have flesh and blood in common, Jesus also shared in these, so that through his death he might destroy the one holding the power of death - that is, the devil - and free those who were held in slavery all their lives by the fear of death. For it is clear that he does not reach out to help angels, but to help Abraham’s offspring. Therefore, he had to be like his brothers and sisters in every way, so that he could become a merciful and faithful high priest in matters pertaining to God, to make atonement for the sins of the people. For since he himself has suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are tempted. ()
The tension between God and humanity should inspire us to embrace our value and purpose, while also empowering us to overcome through dependence upon our Savior.
