Worldviews of Our Day

28 So they drew near to the village to which they were going. He acted as if he were going farther, 29 but they urged him strongly, saying, “Stay with us, for it is toward evening and the day is now far spent.” So he went in to stay with them. 30 When he was at table with them, he took the bread and blessed and broke it and gave it to them. 31 And their eyes were opened, and they recognized him. And he vanished from their sight. 32 They said to each other, “Did not our hearts burn within us while he talked to us on the road, while he opened to us the Scriptures?” 33 And they rose that same hour and returned to Jerusalem. And they found the eleven and those who were with them gathered together, 34 saying, “The Lord has risen indeed, and has appeared to Simon!” 35 Then they told what had happened on the road, and how he was known to them in the breaking of the bread.

13 That very day two of them were going to a village named Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem, 14 and they were talking with each other about all these things that had happened. 15 While they were talking and discussing together, Jesus himself drew near and went with them. 16 But their eyes were kept from recognizing him. 17 And he said to them, “What is this conversation that you are holding with each other as you walk?” And they stood still, looking sad. 18 Then one of them, named Cleopas, answered him, “Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?” 19 And he said to them, “What things?” And they said to him, “Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, a man who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, 20 and how our chief priests and rulers delivered him up to be condemned to death, and crucified him. 21 But we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel. Yes, and besides all this, it is now the third day since these things happened. 22 Moreover, some women of our company amazed us. They were at the tomb early in the morning, 23 and when they did not find his body, they came back saying that they had even seen a vision of angels, who said that he was alive. 24 Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but him they did not see.” 25 And he said to them, “O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! 26 Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory?” 27 And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.

28 So they drew near to the village to which they were going. Worldviews of Our Day

Good morning! We will be being in verses 13-35 this morning. So if you want to turn there,
Let’s Pray...
Think about the “Culture Wars” of our day. Many would say that these culture wars are between Christian and secular worldviews. Or perhaps between a Judeo-Christian and post-christian worldviews.
What are the aspects that make up these distinct wars of worldviews. We see the news reporting on a politician fighting for homosexual or transgender rights.
We see the people calling for open and free abortions and calling it women’s rights. We see the breakdown of law and justice in our court and law enforcement systems as people are not afforded due process. We look at this and see a crumbling social culture in America.
But, a worldview is more than just the ethical or moral aspect of our judgment. The oxford dictionary defines a worldview as, “a person’s way of thinking about and understanding life, which depends on their beliefs and attitudes”. A person’s moral compass AND future outlook on life comes from a persons worldview.
For example, an atheist believes that there is no God and that the universe has no purpose or plan. That all of the universe is made up of only physical matter. Therefore, an atheist is being consistent with his belief if he states there are no absolute moral standards. (because there is no God THAT create for a purpose to have moral standards).
They would say that each person or culture can decide for themselves how they want to live. The view of the future to an atheist would also be quite different from that of a Christian worldview. Since there is no God, and human beings and everything else is only made up of physical matter, then there is no afterlife.
But we, as Christians, have different worldviews, of-course for the most part we all share the same moral or ethical principles. But, how we react when something devastating happens or how we see the future reveals our worldview.
How do you look at the world around you? Does your worldview make you content or dissatisfied, hopeful or hopeless, optimistic or pessimistic? The most influential aspect of a Christian’s worldview is his or her theology. Theology is the study of God.
And since we are discussing Christian theology or learning about the Christian God we must look to the only infallible source by which God is revealed, the Scriptures, or the Bible.
However, there is even another principle that comes into play in shaping a Christian’s worldview. And that is how we look at, understand or interpret the scriptures. We must follow the pattern laid out for us in the scriptures themselves.

To Emmaus;

In our text this morning we see two of Christ disciples on a journey to the village of Emmaus. The events of the previous week weighed heavily of their minds and even in their words.
As we’ll see, though we may be in saved and be a part of Christ’s covenant people, there can be unnecessary sorrow, pain, fear, discouragement, or unbiblical outlook on life if we have an incorrect interpretation of the scriptures, that leads to an erroneous theology and an unbiblical worldview.
To Emmaus :

These disciples were discouraged, broken, and seemingly defeated. Yet, let’s not come down on them too hard. They may have been leaving Jersualem sorrowful but Jesus was still in their conversation. They could not help but to discuss the events of the previous week. So, much so that Christ himself chose to educate or instruct them while they walked.
The scripture states,
Luke 24:13–16 ESV
That very day two of them were going to a village named Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem, and they were talking with each other about all these things that had happened. While they were talking and discussing together, Jesus himself drew near and went with them. But their eyes were kept from recognizing him.

Christ saw fit to keep them from recognizing him. Can you imagine what would have happened if Christ would not have veiled who he was? Do you think they would have listened to all the details that Christ was going to teach them? I don’t. They would have been, speechless, in awe, falling down before him or clinging to him. Christ, for sure had a rebuke for them, however it was a rebuke for the purpose of teaching them. Building them up into more mature disciples.
The conversation begins,

The conversation between the two disciples must have been intense. For this stranger catches up to them and wants to know what all the talk is about. How often does this happen to us? Rarely right? Unless we notice a passion in the tone of the conversation.

Notice how Luke describes their reaction to the Jesus’ question. They stood still and looked sad.
The Holy Bible: English Standard Version. (2016). (). Wheaton, IL: Crossway Bibles.
I had the same reaction when I heard the Patriots won the Super Bowl!
But for real, they were in the mist of a three to four hour walk and they stood still showing obvious signs of sorrow.
Yet, the verbal response to the question shows us even more about how well known the events of the past week were to anyone that had been in Jerusalem.
Luke 24:18 ESV
Then one of them, named Cleopas, answered him, “Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?”

18 Then one of them, named Cleopas, answered him, “Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?”

Jesus plays along,
Luke 24:19–24 ESV
And he said to them, “What things?” And they said to him, “Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, a man who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, and how our chief priests and rulers delivered him up to be condemned to death, and crucified him. But we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel. Yes, and besides all this, it is now the third day since these things happened. Moreover, some women of our company amazed us. 19 And he said to them, “What things?” And they said to him, “Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, a man who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, 20 and how our chief priests and rulers delivered him up to be condemned to death, and crucified him. 24 Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but him they did not see.”

To this Cleopas, Jesus was a prophet mighty in word and deed. Cleopas is not timid to speak to this stranger about the hope that he had in Jesus. He hoped that Jesus would redeem Israel. He was looking to Jesus to free Israel from the oppression of the Roman Empire and leave them free to worship God in Holiness and righteousness. And while his declaration fell short of the divinity of Christ, we can’t, at this point, declare him to be an apostate. We see a glimmer of hope in his bold description of the weeks events. We see that their “company” was amazed. They heard of a vision of angels saying that Jesus was alive but his body was missing.
Can you walk a mile in their shoes or sandals? can you imagine experiencing all of that? Would you be so bold to speak like that to a stranger so soon after the rulers put your master and teacher to death?
It seems that Christ’s rebuke is not aimed at their disappointment but the fact that they didn’t realize that it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and die.
Jesus rebukes them,
25 And he said to them, “O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! 26 Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory?” 27 And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.

Jesus calls them foolish and slow of heart! Jesus says that they didn’t believe all that the prophets spoke of. Perhaps, this rebuke was not only for these disciples but to be shared with the rest of them back in Jerusalem.

The disciples as a whole did not seem to have a category in their understanding of God and worldview for the suffering and death of the Christ.
Jesus himself had clearly told them at least three times that he would suffer, be put to death and raised.

Probably one of the most well known statements of Christ is when He told Peter To, “Get behind me Satan” after Peter rebuked Christ for teaching that he must suffer and die in and 22.

The disciples, or a least Peter, should have realized it was coming and searched the scriptures to see how the prophets spoke of these things.
Notice that Christ did not just leave these disciples on the road to Emmaus to themselves and count them out.
NO, he took the time to find them, to walk with them and teach them. As, he instructs them they grow and are in awe of this stranger that knows and can understand the scriptures so well.
Jesus interpreted or explained to them how the writings of Moses and the prophets spoke of the suffering and death of the Christ.
Don’t be fooled by the atheistic secular, almost evolutionary belief that tells you that everyone today is much more educated than those of the past. Within the Jewish culture, there was a much higher literacy rate than in other ancient cultures. They were taught the scriptures from birth and if they hadn’t learned to read, they would have at least memorized large portions of scripture by hearing and repeating it orally in the synagogues.
It seems that Jesus was correcting their method of interpretation of the Old Testament. It was not that these disciples were not familiar with the writings of Moses and the Prophets, but that they were reading and interpreting them wrong.

Also, it seems that the disciples may have been influenced by early origins of what became Rabbinic Judaism which, at least in one aspect, taught that the anointed one the Ben David or Son of David would “defeat the enemies of Israel, restore the people to the Land, reconcile them with God, and introduce a period of spiritual and physical bliss. He was to be prophet, warrior, judge, king, and teacher of Torah.”
Again, Christ was correcting their method of interpretation of the Old Testament.
Many of the Jews of Jesus’s day would over emphasize the military and political passages concerning the Christ. This led to their theology and therefore worldview to be based almost entirely on a passage or passages while completely passing over or deemphasizing other passages.

But lets cover a few.
They seemingly miss or incorrectly interpreted the clear passages like that clearly speaks of a suffering Messiah.

But there are even more illusions to the the suffering of Christ in the Law and the Prophets.

3  He was despised and rejected by men,

a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief;

and as one from whom men hide their faces

he was despised, and we esteemed him not.

4  Surely he has borne our griefs

and carried our sorrows;

yet we esteemed him stricken,

smitten by God, and afflicted.

5  But he was pierced for our transgressions;

he was crushed for our iniquities;

upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace,

and with his wounds we are healed.

6  All we like sheep have gone astray;

we have turned—every one—to his own way;

and the LORD has laid on him

the iniquity of us all.

3  He was despised and rejected by men,

a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief;

and as one from whom men hide their faces

4  Surely he has borne our griefs

But there are even more illusions to the the suffering of Christ in the Law and the Prophets.
a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief;
In , while God is cursing the serpent, We have the first hit of the Gospel
Unfortunately, time will not permit me to go through all the Law and the Prophets as Jesus did in that three to four hour walk to Emmaus.

17  I can count all my bones—
But lets cover a few. In , while God is cursing the serpent, we have the first hint of the Gospel.
he was despised, and we esteemed him not.
Genesis 3:14–15 ESV
The Lord God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, cursed are you above all livestock and above all beasts of the field; on your belly you shall go, and dust you shall eat all the days of your life. I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.”
Genesis 3:14-15
In this first hint of the Gospel, God, while cursing the evil serpent, gave hope to Adam and Eve and thus the entire human race.
But lets cover a few. In , while God is cursing the serpent, we have the first hint of the Gospel.

all the days of your life.

15  I will put enmity between you and the woman,

he shall bruise your head,

and you shall bruise his heel.”

Surely he has borne our griefs
Even BEFORE the He pronounced judgement on Adam and Eve he gave them HOPE that one day there would be a man, an offspring of the woman, that would defeat the serpent and its work.
14 The Lord God said to the serpent,
In the very day that Satan wrecked God’s perfect creation, God stopped Satan’s victory lap celebration, by cursing him and proclaiming his final defeat.
Adam and Eve knew that the tempter would be punished and they waited for an offspring that God would provide.
In this first hint of the Gospel, God, while cursing the evil serpent, gave hope to Adam and Eve and thus the entire human race. Even BEFORE the He pronounced judgement on Adam and Eve he gave them HOPE that one day there would be a man, an offspring or seed of the woman, that would defeat the serpent and its work. In the very day that Satan wrecked God’s perfect creation, God stopped Satan’s victory lap celebration, by cursing him and telling of His final defeat. Adam and Eve knew that the tempter would be punished and they waited for an offspring that God would provide.
18  they divide my garments among them,
and carried our sorrows;
Perhaps it would be Cain or Abel. But, with the murder of Abel by Cain we see that Cain can’t be God’s chosen offspring of the Eve that would redeem them.
Then we read towards the end of in verse 25 and see,
25. And Adam knew his wife again, and she bore a son and called his name Seth, for she said, “God has appointed for me another offspring instead of Abel, for Cain killed him.”
Genesis 4:25 ESV
And Adam knew his wife again, and she bore a son and called his name Seth, for she said, “God has appointed for me another offspring instead of Abel, for Cain killed him.”
For Adam and Eve they could see God working to continue the human race and provide an offspring.
And Adam knew his wife again, and she bore a son and called his name Seth, for she said, “God has appointed for me another offspring instead of Abel, for Cain killed him.”
“Because you have done this,
And God would continue to provide offspring up through Noah and his sons and beyond. And while there surely were the offspring of the serpent that were present that continued to fight against God and His covenant people, God continued to provide for his covenant people to fulfill of .
Then, in the story of God, we come to Abram. Here God gives us further revelation, more details about his plan. We see God call Abram in
Genesis 12:1–3 ESV
Now the Lord said to Abram, “Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you. And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”
All the families of the earth, not just Abram’s, would be blessed through Abram’s family or offspring. We see in that the land is given to Abram’s offspring.
Now the Lord said to Abram, “Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you. And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.
All the families of the earth, not just Abram’s, would be blessed through Abram’s family or offspring. We see in verse seven of chapter 12 that the land is given to Abram’s offspring.
This theme of a savior offspring of the woman continued through Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Judah, and eventually David.
With each verse of text in scripture God reveals more and more of Himself and His plan. Giving us detail after detail in multiple pictures of word tapestry.
Abram’s seed is not the whole nation of Israel for Paul tells us in
Galatians 3:16 ESV
Now the promises were made to Abraham and to his offspring. It does not say, “And to offsprings,” referring to many, but referring to one, “And to your offspring,” who is Christ.
Christ Is the offspring of Abraham that receives all the promises! He is the seed of the woman that crushed the serpent .

Galatians 3:28–29 ESV

Christ is the woman’s offspring, and Abraham’s offspring, the one to conquer and crush the serpent.
What does it mean that the offspring of the serpent will bruise the heel of the woman’s offspring but the woman’s offspring will crush the serpent’s head.
Well, if you get a bruise, for the most part, is permeant? No right? Now if your head gets crushed, would that be permeant? Could that be final? Even causing death? Of-course it would!
and for my clothing they cast lots.

Now how is Christ the offspring of the woman? First, remember all of the genealogies in the Bible. That many times we are tempted to skip over as we read. Notice how most of the time the father is mentioned and then his offspring or seed.
Of-course it would! The serpent is Satan and the seed or offspring of the woman is the Christ. Now Christ is bruised for our transgressions, obviously, as we have seen but Christ has crush the power of Satan, sin, and death through his sacrificial death burial and resurrection.

But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons
Now Jesus did not have a human father. But was born of the virgin Mary through the Holy Spirt overshadowing her. This is why Paul tells us in  “But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons.” Christ therefore, doesn’t carry the cures of Adam or his sinful nature and is the second or last Adam as Paul points out in ,
45 Thus it is written, “The first man Adam became a living being”; the last Adam became a life-giving spirit. 46 But it is not the spiritual that is first but the natural, and then the spiritual. 47 The first man was from the earth, a man of dust; the second man is from heaven.

This is the way that Jesus is not only the seed of the woman (having no human father but only a human mother) but also he is the last Adam and a type of the the first Adam as Paul points out in , which states,
14 Yet death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those whose sinning was not like the transgression of Adam, who was a type of the one who was to come.

Where did God get those skins? From animals that had to die in order for Adam and Eve’s sinful flesh to be covered.
As much a virtue that modesty is, the main work of God here was not because Adam and Eve were showing a bit too much skin.
upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace,
They, Adam and Eve, had tried to work for themselves and cover their sinful flesh with fig leaves.
God, also told them that in the day that they ate of the forbidden fruit they would die. Nothing had physically died. Nothing had given its life blood to clothe them in the fig leaves.
Therefore, God Himself, made the sacrifice. The animals spilled their blood to cover and clothe Adam and Eve. The animals died in place of Adam and Eve. This is a shadow of the things that were to come, pointing forward to the suffering of Christ. This was the action of God not the man and woman, for, Salvation is of the Lord!
Through this one act God initiates the sacrificial system before the law of Moses.
This one act by God sets up the sacrificial system before the law of Moses.
This is how Abel knew to bring an offering of his flock.
, By faith Abel offered to God a more acceptable sacrifice than Cain, through which he was commended as righteous, God commending him by accepting his gifts. And through his faith, though he died, he still speaks.

In the scriptures we see that a lambs, rams, goats, and bulls are what is commonly called for as the sacrificial animals. This becomes clear in when God provides a ram that is caught in a thicket as a substitute sacrifice for Isaac.
Later in the scriptures
all the days of your life.
Once again, Salvation is of the LORD!
and with his wounds we are healed.
God commands lambs to be used as the sacrificial animal during the passover as He rescued or redeemed the Hebrews from slavery in Egypt. Goats and bulls are also used as the sacrificial animals in the Mosaic sacrificial system in the Law.

and between your offspring and her offspring;
unfortunatly time will not allow for us to go into the details that point to Christ in all of the law.
We see this in and 10 that the sacrificial system in the law is but a shadow or copy of the heavenly reality.
Hebrews 10:1 ESV

Hebrews 3
For since the law has but a shadow of the good things to come instead of the true form of these realities, it can never, by the same sacrifices that are continually offered every year, make perfect those who draw near.
1 For since the law has but a shadow of the good things to come instead of the true form of these realities, it can never, by the same sacrifices that are continually offered every year, make perfect those who draw near. Otherwise, would they not have ceased to be offered, since the worshipers, having once been cleansed, would no longer have any consciousness of sins? But in these sacrifices there is a reminder of sins every year. For it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.

The blood of these sacrifices never took away sin, they were a reminder of sin and the necessity that there be a greater sacrifice
Christ is that greater sacrifice.
Hebrews 10:11–14 ESV
And every priest stands daily at his service, offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God, waiting from that time until his enemies should be made a footstool for his feet. For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified.

There are so many things that God uses to show us, not only that the Christ had to suffer and die but also other the aspects of Christ and His Kingdom in types and shadows.
We need to be familiar with the scriptures and learn the methods of interpretation that the apostles themselves used so we are not found to be foolish and slow of heart to believe.
We should also see that Christ is,
A type of Ark, from and 7 and related to Christ in
A type bronze serpent from Numbers 21 and related to Christ in

A type of Jacobs ladder in and related to Christ in .
A type of Tabernacle and Temple from and and related to Christ in , , , , and 2:21.
And many, many other types or shadows....
From the first mention of the offspring of the woman crushing the serpents head, it is clear that it would happen through suffering.
The first sacrifice grew into a more detailed sacrificial system as God revealed more of His truth to His people culminating in the Tabernacle and Temple worship.
There are many other ways in which we could show the types or shadows of Christ and how Jesus fulfilled them in the New Testament.
There are many other ways in which we could show the types or shadows of Christ and how Jesus fulfilled them in the New Testament. The is how the apostles interpreted the scriptures. And why the early Christians “Devoted themselves to the apostles teaching”, as stated in .

I believe, this how Christ explained it to the disciples on the road to Emmaus.
In the narrative, Luke tells us that their hearts burned within them as they heard this stranger explain the suffering and death of the Christ as they traveled. Cleopas and and his friend were so taken over Jesus that they asked him to stay with them as they approached the village.
32 They said to each other, “Did not our hearts burn within us while he talked to us on the road, while he opened to us the Scriptures?”

And they found the eleven and those who were with them gathered together, 34 saying, “The Lord has risen indeed, and has appeared to Simon!” 35 Then they told what had happened on the road, and how he was known to them in the breaking of the bread.
Christ not only preached the Word of God to them but also had communion with them in that small village as he had with the twelve a few days earlier the night he was betrayed.
It was here that Christ decided to reveal who he was, as Christ broke the bread, their eyes were opened, and Christ vanished.
How did their disposition change? When their eyes were opened, not only did they realize that Jesus is alive but they also knew how and why the Christ had to suffer and die.
From Emmaus:
Even though they had traveled for three or four hours already that day, they were renewed with the energy and drive to go tell people.
They knew that Jesus was alive and it wasn’t a plan B but was God’s plan all along. Christ our serpent crusher, perfect sacrifice, and slain Passover Lamb took on our sins and the wrath of God and once and for all defeated Satan, sin, and death.
The Gospel is so amazing that God has woven it throughout the Law and the Prophets which is what we call the Old Testament. This is one reason the Old Testament is still important and we don’t unhitch from it. The Old Testament is ALL about Christ and His work!
The two left Emmaus with a new, forever changed worldview. They had a more biblical theology or Biblical view of God AND His plan.
Because they had a biblical interpretation of the scriptures explained to them by Christ himself and We, Brothers and Sisters, Have this biblical interpretation preserved for us in the writings of he apostles, The New Testament.
Will we be changed by His word? Will we give our ear to the apostles’ standard for interpretation or will we continue to miss the treasures of Christ.
Search out the Christ and his Kingdom in the scriptures. Be willing to have your Worldview and theology challenged by the scriptures. For the scriptures, God’s Word, is our only standard.
