The book of Hebrews is a lengthy defense of the supremacy of Jesus Christ, especially in comparison to the Old Covenant of Moses.
The Problem of Death
The Problem of Death
First - the downside of the Old Covenant
The former priests, on the one hand, existed in greater numbers because they were prevented by death from continuing,
There’s no question, is there? Death brings everything to a screeching halt. Because the Levitical priests died, just as everyone dies, they had to be replaced. Those words “greater numbers” are really an understatement.
23 The former priests, on the one hand, existed in greater numbers because they were prevented by death from continuing There’s no question, is there? Death stops everything that we do here.
During the 1,400 years of the priesthood, hundreds of thousands of men served as priests. They mediated for tens of millions of Jews, men and women both. They offered hundreds of millions of sacrifices of all sorts, including sacrifices for their own sins, as says.
In Peter speaks of the Law of God as an impossible task to fulfill:
“Now therefore why do you put God to the test by placing upon the neck of the disciples a yoke which neither our fathers nor we have been able to bear?
The burden of the Law wasn’t the moral code, but the unending system of sacrifices and requirements. The Law never said, “It is finished.” Under religious Law, it is never finished. God is never satisfied. Sacrifices and offerings and fastings and feasts and observations dominated their lives.
The purpose of all of this was to mediate a temporary peace with God, a peace that was made with difficulty, and could be shattered in a moment.
As says, those priests of the law needed to offer up sacrifices daily, for their own sins as well as the sins of the people.
This is still true for those today who live under the intolerable burden of religious ritual and efforts.
As we saw last week, the former commandment, the Law, was weak and useless, because it could not make anyone perfect. What was true of the Law was true of the priesthood and the priests themselves. The entire system was weak and useless; it could not perfect anyone.
All of these sacrifices were carried out by mere men, who were as subject to death and judgment as any man who came to them with a sacrifice. In fact, as we see in , they could not offer sacrifices for others until they had offered a sacrifice for themselves. As we saw last week, the Law, the former commandment, was weak and useless and could not make anyone perfect. Those words – “weak” and “useless” – apply to every aspect of the Law. The sacrifices were weak and useless. The priesthood was weak and useless. The priests themselves were weak and useless. The purpose of the Law was not to solve the problem of sin, but to reveal sin, and to hold out the hope of a perfect, permanent solution.
The burden of the Law was not simply the fact of living under such demanding rules and regulations, but of never being able to stop and say, “It is finished.” With very few exceptions, such as the birth of a child, sacrifices would be repeated regularly throughout one’s life, sometimes repeated throughout the year.
The priests, obviously, died just as other men and women died. They had to be replaced by the next generation, over and over again. Israel’s calendar was shaped by the major feasts – the Passover (which included the feast of unleavened bread), the Feast of Weeks (or Pentecost), and the Day of Atonement, which was immediately preceded by Rosh Hashannah, the New Year, and immediately followed by the Feast of Tabernacles. Men were required to attend the three major feasts, with few exceptions, and quite often brought their entire families to Jerusalem. Beyond this, there were other, lesser feasts and fasts, monthly new moon festivals, and the weekly sabbath, all of which were not simply religious days on the calendar, but involved sacrifices and the priesthood. The purpose of all of this was to mediate a temporary peace with God, a peace that was made with difficulty, and broken in a moment. No sacrifice could be made at a distance; the offerer had to be personally present. And no sacrifice made the slightest difference at all without true and heart-felt repentance. Someone merely going through the motions gained nothing, even if they offered a sacrifice every day (and some did, the “extreme party,” the Chassidim, the ancient forerunners of modern day Hasidic Judaism). The Law could never say to anyone, as the Lord Jesus said, “It is finished.”
This was because the purpose of the Law was not to solve the problem of sin, but to reveal sin, and to hold out the hope of a perfect, permanent solution.
The purpose of the Law was not to solve the problem of sin, but to reveal sin, and to hold out the hope of a perfect, permanent solution.
Selah. Let’s stop and think about this for a moment.
The Law is good when we give it its rightful place. It serves as a tutor, revealing my sin and showing me my need for a Savior. And the Law was a promise that a Savior was coming. That promise has now been fulfilled in Jesus Christ.
has now been fulfilled in Jesus Christ.
But the Law cannot save. The constant repetition of sacrifices and rites and rituals and prayers and fastings could not save. The Law draws a circle, not a straight line. There was no exit from the Law, except through death, as tells us.
Or do you not know, brethren (for I am speaking to those who know the law), that the law has jurisdiction over a person as long as he lives?
Therefore, my brethren, you also were made to die to the Law through the body of Christ, so that you might be joined to another, to Him who was raised from the dead, in order that we might bear fruit for God.
But the Law cannot save. The constant repetition of sacrifices and rites and rituals and prayers and fastings could not save. You could offer a sacrifice every day, and still end up in hell for all eternity.
The truth is that you could offer a sacrifice every day, and still end up in hell for all eternity, because the Law is weak and useless.
You could offer a sacrifice every day, and still end up in hell for all eternity.
The first view is that sin is a terrible, terrible thing, and you are responsible to make up for it. God has been kind enough to allow you to earn your salvation. That might not take too much, or it might take an enormous amount of effort, but one thing is clear: YOU are going to have to do your part.
So, you really can’t be at peace. Oh, you might think that you’re fine today, but you don’t have a guarantee that you’ll be fine tomorrow, not under the Law.
That was the view of the Jews in Jesus’ time; it is still the view of many today.
The second view is that sin is a bad thing, but God is cool with us, and is happy when we’re happy. Are you an alcoholic or drug addict? Yeah, God is pretty sad for you, and sends His best wishes. Are you homosexual? Don’t worry about it; love is love. Do you worship Jesus or Buddha or Mohammed or nothing, really? Doesn’t matter, as long you’re a nice person. Here – do this thing, say this once or twice, eat this, drink that, raise your hand, go forward at the invitation, get dunked in water, or not, whatever, you’re good.
The second view is that sin is a bad thing, but God is cool with us, and is happy when we’re happy. Alcoholic or drug addict? Yeah, God is pretty sad for you, and sends His best wishes. Homosexuality? Love is love; God’s good with that. Jesus or Buddha or Mohammed? Doesn’t matter, as long you believe something. Here – do this thing, say this once or twice, eat this, drink that, get dunked in water, or not, whatever, you’re good. That’s the view taken by the Gentiles in Jesus’ time, and is dominant in many denominations and religious systems today.
That’s the view taken by the Gentiles in Jesus’ time, and is dominant in many denominations and religious systems today.
Both of these roads lead directly to hell. Their teachers and pastors and priests and ministers are agents of Satan. Their teachings are doctrines of demons. Both deny the greatness and majesty and perfection of Jesus Christ and the salvation that He gives.
So let’s turn our attention to the Lord Jesus Christ, who is the complete opposite of weak and useless.
There are four declarations made about Jesus. These declarations are the basis of our hope in Christ, the grounds of our confidence in Him, our assurance of the power of the Gospel to save us. If you believe these declarations, then you can let go of every other means of righteousness and salvation. In fact, you must let them go, because they are utterly incompatible with the Gospel.
DECLARATION 1: ETERNAL SAVIOR, ETERNAL PRIESTHOOD

This might sound like a basic truth, and I suppose that it is, but it is the basis for everything promised by God regarding our salvation. We have a High Priest who is eternal, and holds His priesthood permanently.

We have a High Priest who is eternal, and holds His priesthood permanently. Whenever the New Testament speaks of men like Moses and David and Elijah, it speaks of them as historical figures. Whenever the New Testament speaks of Jesus Christ, it speaks of Him as the living Lord of glory, the Head of the church, and the soon and coming King. From Acts to Revelation Jesus is mentioned almost 2000 times, an incredible number of times, and He is never presented as a dead historical figure, but rather as the Living Lord of Glory.

Selah. Let’s think about this for a moment.
Christianity is not a religion in memorium, some set of activities that we do in memory of someone who has passed. It is a living relationship with the Living Savior. Jesus called Peter and Andrew, and James and John, at a specific moment of history. He called me at a specific moment of history. He was physically present at the Sea of Galilee when He called them. He was spiritually present in that Jeep Cherokee on a mountain road in Southern California when He called me.
Are you in Christ? Then your Lord is alive and well, and you are called to a daily life in Him. He hasn’t retired. He hasn’t passed on this vital connection to us to some subordinates in heaven.
HE is and will always be YOUR Lord, YOUR Savior, YOUR High Priest.
Moments after He had ascended to heaven, Jesus’ disciples were told
11 “… This Jesus, who has been taken up from you into heaven, will come in just the same way as you have watched Him go into heaven.” ()
When Peter stood before the Jewish council he said,
11 “[Jesus Christ] is [not was] the stone which was rejected by you, the builders, but which became the chief corner stone.” ()
Stephen, the first martyr of the church, saw Jesus standing in heaven at the right hand of God ().
Jesus Himself appeared to Saul of Tarsus:
3 As [Saul] was traveling, it happened that he was approaching Damascus, and suddenly a light from heaven flashed around him; 4 and he fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to him, “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?” 5 And he said, “Who are You, Lord?” And He said, “I am Jesus whom you are persecuting …” ()
Years later Paul suffered immensely from something he called “a thorn in the flesh.” He begged the Lord to take it away, and reported,
9 And He has said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness.” ()
And at the end of his life, Paul wrote about his trial before Nero,
16 At my first defense no one supported me, but all deserted me; may it not be counted against them. 17 But the Lord stood with me and strengthened me, so that through me the proclamation might be fully accomplished, and that all the Gentiles might hear; and I was rescued out of the lion’s mouth. 18 The Lord will rescue me from every evil deed, and will bring me safely to His heavenly kingdom; to Him be the glory forever and ever. Amen. ()
Over and over again we see that the Lord Jesus Christ is living and alive and reigning over all things. And our Living Lord is a Living High Priest. He hasn’t retired, or passed it on to others. He Himself continues to mediate for us, as Paul said:
For there is one God, and one mediator also between God and men, the man Christ Jesus,
Notice that little word “is.” There IS one God. There IS one mediator between God and man, the man Christ Jesus.
Jesus Christ is an eternal Savior with an eternal priesthood.

but Jesus, on the other hand, because He continues forever, holds His priesthood permanently. Therefore He is able also to save forever those who draw near to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them.
The sacrificial work of Jesus is done and accomplished, as says. He offered Himself up once and for all time.

The sacrificial work of Jesus is done and accomplished, as says; He offered Himself up once and for all time.
But the intercessory work of Jesus is ongoing, and will be as long as He lives. He saves to the uttermost of eternity, and to the uttermost of your need for salvation.
Consider :
who is the one who condemns? Christ Jesus is He who died, yes, rather who was raised, who is at the right hand of God, who also intercedes for us.
Selah. Let’s think about this.
If you are in Jesus Christ by grace through faith, then Jesus Christ is your Intercessor. He is praying for you this very moment. You are kept by His prayers. You are strengthened by His prayers. You are preserved by His prayers.
He has been, and is, and will praying for you in your grief and fear and confusion and doubt. People will ask us to pray, and we’ll say we will, and sometimes we actually do once or twice.
But the Lord Jesus Christ, our great High Priest, never forgets you. He is never too busy to intercede for you. You never interrupt His work, because you ARE His work. He never sleeps, and He never takes a break. How can He do that and still take care of everything else in His hands? He’s God, that’s how!
If you belong to Him, then the Father is hearing your name right now. Jesus will not stop interceding for you. He never takes a break. How can He do that and still take care of everything else in His hands? He’s God, that’s how!
Is your salvation secure?
Some of us are sure; others aren’t so sure.
“If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself, that where I am, there you may be also.
He’s getting a place ready for you so that you can be with Him where He is.
DECLARATION 3: THE RIGHT HIGH PRIEST
DECLARATION 3: THE RIGHT HIGH PRIEST
But He’s not just at work THERE; He’s at work in you, as well.
For it was fitting for us to have such a high priest, holy, innocent, undefiled, separated from sinners and exalted above the heavens;
says that Jesus
Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her, so that He might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, that He might present to Himself the church in all her glory, having no spot or wrinkle or any such thing; but that she would be holy and blameless.
who gave Himself for us to redeem us from every lawless deed, and to purify for Himself a people for His own possession, zealous for good deeds.
For by one offering He has perfected for all time those who are sanctified.
eph 5 25-26-7
When we call someone to believe in Jesus Christ alone for salvation, to abandon their traditions and man-centered religion, or their human self-sufficiency, are we just arguing over opinions and personal points of view?
No.
We are utterly confident in the surpassing greatness of Jesus Christ.
He is making a place for you in heaven. And He is making YOU ready for heaven. He has redeemed you. He is purifying you as His own precious possession, an object of His perfect, wonderful love. How do you know that He is doing this work in you? You’ll be increasingly committed to good works, to living as a faithful disciple of Jesus Christ.
Can you really trust Jesus Christ to do what He has promised?
DECLARATION 3: Jesus is precisely the High Priest we need.
Paul said this,
But may it never be that I would boast, except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.
Should we be proud of ourselves? No. Should we boast in our accomplishments? No. Should we boast in Christ? Should we brag about His victory, and His power? Should we speak proudly of His glory and dominion? Absolutely. Without a doubt.
For many people, not boasting in themselves somehow becomes not boasting about Christ. Listen, the Lord Jesus Christ is Savior like no other. He is Lord. He is God. He is wiser, gentler, kinder, holier, more merciful, more gracious, than any of the idols and spiritual fantasies people have.
Are you in Christ? Then Jesus Christ is your Intercessor; He is praying for you at this very moment. You are kept by His prayers. You are preserved in Him by His prayers. He has been, and is, and will be, praying for you in your sadness and grief and frustration. He has been, and is, and will be, praying for you as you suffering physical illness and emotional trauma and spiritual opposition. If you belong to the Lord Jesus Christ, then the Father is hearing your name right now. Jesus will never stop. He will never retire. He will never be too busy to listen to you. He said in that He was going to prepare a place for us. The Scripture also tells us that He is preparing us for that place. That is His work, and He is devoted to it. Some say that you need others to influence Jesus for you; what a terrible lie that is, and a terrible insult to His character! You aren’t an interruption to His work; you ARE His work, if you are in Him. He says in , “I am for you,” and He says in that He never sleeps or slumbers, but is faithful to keep you.
We don’t fear telling someone that false religion will condemn them to hell, because we are so utterly confident in the character and nature of our Savior, who is utterly unlike any other.
DECLARATION 3: Jesus is precisely the High Priest we need.
Can you really trust Jesus Christ to do what He has promised?
26 For it was fitting for us to have such a high priest, holy, innocent, undefiled, separated from sinners and exalted above the heavens … ()
Our High Priest is holy. He is absolutely pure in nature. He is free from any contamination or pollution, and is perfectly and utterly pleasing to God.
That little word “fitting” means right, or appropriate, or suitable. Here it doesn’t mean that Jesus is the kind of High Priest that we deserve, but the kind of High Priest that we so desperately need.
Our High Priest is holy. He is absolutely pure in nature. He is free from any contamination or pollution, and belonged purely and perfectly to God. We were conceived in sin, but Jesus was Holy was His conception.
Our High Priest is Innocent. He was harmless. He never defiled anyone. He never harmed anyone. He never wronged anyone.
Our High Priest is Undefiled. He began in holiness, He lived sinlessly, and He ascended undefiled. No one was ever in worse company, and yet that bad company did not defile Him. He spent His life around sinners, and was never changed by them in the slightest degree.
Our High Priest is Separated from Sinners. While He was within touching distance of wicked people on a regular basis, His character and nature were always separate from them. He was numbered WITH the transgressors, as says, but He was never numbered AS a transgressor.
Our High Priest is Exalted Above the Heavens. He was made, for a while, lower than the angels, humbled to death on a cross, and buried in a tomb. But with His resurrection came glorification, exaltation, and ascension. And Jesus is now in the heavenly tabernacle, in the presence of God the Father, where He is enthroned as King and intercedes as High Priest.
Selah. Let’s think about this.
Paul said this,
But may it never be that I would boast, except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.
We should never boast in ourselves. But we must boast in Jesus Christ. He is not better, He is best. It is His Lordship that rules the earth, even now. He is the Savior. He is the King. It is His Word that dominates our lives. It is His purpose that governs our lives.
Listen, the Lord Jesus Christ is a Savior like no other. He is Lord. He is God. He is the Perfect Man.
Jesus is holy, innocent, undefiled, separated from sinners, and exalted above the heavens.
wiser, gentler, kinder, holier, more merciful, more gracious, than any of the idols and spiritual fantasies people have.
It was precisely because of these characteristics that Jesus was able to obtain perfect, final salvation for those who believe in Him. Some say, “Well, I need a priest who is like me.” No, you don’t. A priest who is like you could never help you. A priest like you would NEED salvation, not be in a position to offer salvation. Is that a matter of opinion? No - it’s matter of biblical truth.
We call all sinners – whether they are atheists or religious, whether they are Hindus or Baptists or Jews or Lutherans or Buddhists or Roman Catholics or Satanists or Pentecostals – to repent of their sins and to believe in the Lord Jesus Christ.
The world is offended by Him. So be it. Being faithful to Jesus Christ is worth offending the world. Because around us are people who desperate for true salvation and hope, for forgiveness, for peace with God, and the only way to have peace with God is to come through Jesus Christ.
It is the holiness, innocence, purity, separation, and exaltation that make Him the perfect Savior.
He is holy, but not merciless.
He is innocent, but not naive.
He is pure, but not unaware.
He is separate, but not distant.
He is exalted, but not unapproachable.
No one can compare to Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. Those who say that this is a matter of opinion are no different than those who openly reject Him.
Jesus is not great because we call all men and women and children to repent of their sins and believe the Gospel.
We call all to repent and believe the Gospel because the Lord Jesus Christ is beyond compare, and there is salvation in no other name.
His holiness, innocence, purity, separation, and exaltation don’t make Him unapproachable, but rather the perfect Savior. He doesn’t look at His people with callous disregard, but with gentle kindness. There was never a moment’s resentment that He had to give His life for you. In fact, He rejoiced to die in your place, and to give up His life in order to give you life.

DECLARATION 4: ETERNAL SATISFACTION
DECLARATION 4: ETERNAL SATISFACTION
For it was fitting for us to have such a high priest, holy, innocent, undefiled, separated from sinners and exalted above the heavens; who does not need daily, like those high priests, to offer up sacrifices, first for His own sins and then for the sins of the people, because this He did once for all when He offered up Himself. For the Law appoints men as high priests who are weak, but the word of the oath, which came after the Law, appoints a Son, made perfect forever.
Jesus died once. Just once. One time. He died at a specific moment in history. Although we can’t point to the exact day and the precise time, there was an exact day and a precise time. Jesus died once for all when He offered up Himself.
26 For it was fitting for us to have such a high priest, holy, innocent, undefiled, separated from sinners and exalted above the heavens; 27 who does not need daily, like those high priests, to offer up sacrifices, first for His own sins and then for the sins of the people, because this He did once for all when He offered up Himself. ()

Jesus died once. Just once. One time. He died at a specific moment in history. Although we can’t point to the exact day and the precise time, there was an exact day and a precise time. Jesus died once for all when He offered up Himself.
I heard a man once say, “When you sin, God goes back in time and puts that sin on Jesus.” No. That is utterly wrong.
Jesus died in history, once for all. It’s not possible for a Christian to commit a sin that God did not know about before creation. It’s not possible for a Christian to commit a sin that Jesus did not suffer for on the cross.
says,
nor was it that He would offer Himself often, as the high priest enters the holy place year by year with blood that is not his own. Otherwise, He would have needed to suffer often since the foundation of the world; but now once at the consummation of the ages He has been manifested to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself.
Jesus died once. That’s it. That’s all that was necessary. By His single sacrifice the full purpose of God was accomplished.
Selah. Let’s think about this.
Any suggestion that Jesus dies over and over again, or that His sacrifice needs to be offered over and over, is heretical. If Jesus doesn’t offer HIMSELF often, there is NO justification for anyone else attempting to offer Him often.
Any suggestion that Jesus dies over and over again, or that His sacrifice needs to be offered over and over, is heretical. If Jesus doesn’t offer HIMSELF often, there is NO justification for anyone else attempting to offer Him often.
Are you in Christ by grace through faith? Then Jesus bore the wrath of God against you, and God will never again be wrathful against you. Yes, you sin over and over. You face temptation again and again, and fall repeatedly. You are weak, as is every other human being. And each of those sins crushes your confidence, and you might even become hopeless.
But Jesus has died once for all of His elect. That’s you. Jesus died once for all time. You can’t out-sin His death. The penalty of your sins has been satisfied.
The hope of the Gospel is not that we can go make an Old Testament-style sacrifice when we sin. The hope of the Gospel is not that we can do acts of penance to raise ourselves back to acceptance by God. And when I say acts of penance, don’t think that I only mean the Roman Catholic Church. Every Christian knows what it’s like to sin, and then to think, “I need to do THIS or THAT to make up for it.”
The hope of the Gospel, which we boastfully declare in the Lord Jesus, is that a perfect offering has been made for sin, once for all time, and that it is available by the grace of God to all who will believe in the Lord Jesus Christ. There is an all-sufficient Savior, and there is peace with God because of His High Priestly work.
There is an all-sufficient Savior, and there is peace with God because of His High Priestly work.
You see, this is why we have the promise of true peace with God, of true assurance of our salvation. This is why the Christian life is not one of marking time or going through the motions while we wait for death, but of new life, new birth, conversion, transformation, increasing joy and gladness in our salvation!
Our hope in the Gospel is not that we can continue to make an Old Testament-style sacrifice when necessary, but that Jesus has made a single, perfect sacrifice, once for all time, and is able to save forever, to the uttermost, those who come to God through Him, since He lives eternally to make eternal intercession for them.
You see, this is why we have the promise of true peace with God, of true assurance of our salvation. This is why the Christian life is not one of marking time or going through the motions while we wait for death, but of new life, new birth, conversion, transformation, increasing joy and gladness in our salvation! If your peace and joy in Jesus Christ diminishes the longer you know Him, there’s something wrong somewhere.
