Feast of Trumpets
Feast of Trumpets
Leviticus 23:23-25
This feast is to take place 7 months after passover.
Roughly September 29th to October 1st.
To us, feast of Trumpets to the Jews
Yom Teruah
Yom Teruah
Yom= Day Teruah= Trumpet
The day to blow trumpets
Trumpets were used to used to raise the alarm, to command armies to do one thing or another, and to announce the glory of the Lord.
Why blow trumpets, we will cover that soon.
v.24- This day is a holy day, another sabbath, a day set aside to worship the Lord.
A Memorial v.24
A Memorial v.24
A memorial for what?
There are two answers for that question, the first can be found in the other name of the festival.
Rosh Hashanah
Rosh Hashanah
This means the “head of the year” or the new year.
The Jews have two calendars that they hold to, the traditional calendar, and the holy Calendar
This day, the first day of Tishri was always celebrated as the new year until in Exodus when God told Moses to make Nisan the first month of the year.
The Lord said to Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt, “This month shall be for you the beginning of months. It shall be the first month of the year for you.
Rosh Hashanah was the first month of the year because traditionally this is the month that the world was created.
A call for a memorial could have been to remember the time when Yahweh omnipotent created the heavens and the earth, the blowing of trumpets reminding us of the power of the voice of God and the shouting of the sons of God.
when the morning stars sang together and all the sons of God shouted for joy?
I was in the Spirit on the Lord’s day, and I heard behind me a loud voice like a trumpet
The voice of God being described as a trumpet.
The Giving of the law
The Giving of the law
This was a reminder of the giving of the law
On the morning of the third day there were thunders and lightnings and a thick cloud on the mountain and a very loud trumpet blast, so that all the people in the camp trembled. Then Moses brought the people out of the camp to meet God, and they took their stand at the foot of the mountain. Now Mount Sinai was wrapped in smoke because the Lord had descended on it in fire. The smoke of it went up like the smoke of a kiln, and the whole mountain trembled greatly.
The trumpet blast was from heaven, to announce the descending of the glory of the Lord.
When God met with Moses to bring us the Mosaic law which is the law of Moses.
When the people remembered this awesome day, this day of fear when they heard the voice of God.
Yom Teruah is a time of repentance
Yom Teruah is a time of repentance
This celebration is just 10 days before Yom Kipper, the day of Atonement.
The day when the high priest goes in to atone for all of our sins.
This was a call for people to remember how awesome God is!! To remember how holy His law is!! And a day to repent and turn back to Him.
The feasts are a practice, a dress rehearsal for things to come
Passover= Death of Christ
First fruits= The resurrection
Pentecost= The giving of the Holy Spirit
Day of Trumpets=?
The Church United With the King
The Church United With the King
Remember, the trumpet was used to declare the coming of the glory of God.
Then I saw the seven angels who stand before God, and seven trumpets were given to them.
Seven Trumpets.
but that in the days of the trumpet call to be sounded by the seventh angel, the mystery of God would be fulfilled, just as he announced to his servants the prophets.
There was something said to John just prior that he wasn’t allowed to write.
This speaks that at the seventh trumpet the mystery would be fulfilled.
Behold! I tell you a mystery. We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we shall be changed.
Almost the same wording, the mystery, concerning us and the dead. At the last trump, the seventh trump.
For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first.
The same event taking place in 1 Thessalonians. The final trump when the Lord is descending.
The feast of trumpets is pointing us to the time of the final trumpet
The feast of trumpets is pointing us to the time of the final trumpet
When we will be re-united with out king.
What does Yom Teruah mean for us today?
What does Yom Teruah mean for us today?
Yom Teruah was a time to remember the Mosaic covenant and call the people to repentance, a time of reflection before Yom Kippor.
Today it is communion. We reflect on the new covenant set up by Jesus and His blood. Communion should be a time of reflection, repentance, and preparing for the day of the Lord.
