Introduction

Greetings...
Together as we have traveled through the book of Ephesians we have journeyed with God in examining the “Glorious Church Of Christ.”
We have seen that the “glorious church of Christ” was in the eternal plans of the Father.
We have studied of the great dangers of being outside of His church and dire need of being in it and apart of it.
We have come to know the importance of not only the eternally planned blood bought church but the Law that was created to govern it and the beautiful unity it created.
We have witnessed in our studies how proper leadership will guide those that are “new in Christ” to walk “not in futility of mind” but “according to truth and love, sacrifice and submission.”
Paul then, in our text, begins to explain how one stays strong and firm in such endeavors.
How husbands, wives, children, masters, slaves, and everyone else can walk according to truth and love, sacrifice and submission.
It’s with the special armor God made just for us.
Over the last two weeks we have looked at the first two special pieces of armor, the Belt of Truth & Breastplate of Righteousness.
Today we will be looking at the third armor piece which is the “Shoes of Preparation For The Gospel of Peace.”
Today we look at the second piece to this special armor made for by God…The Breastplate of Righteousness.

The Roman Soldier’s Shoes

The Roman soldier’s shoe was called a “caligae.”

Caligae were sandals with thick leather soles, embedded with hobnails or bits of rock for increased traction, and tied to the feet with numerous leather straps. This durable and lightweight footwear was fit for both marching and fighting. They became more comfortable as constant wear conformed the leather soles to the shape of the wearer’s feet.”

The shoe did many things for the Roman soldiers.

They provided protected, traction, strength, stability, and endurance.
They provided protected, traction, strength, stability, and endurance.
The shoe of the Roman soldier was invaluable.

They provided strength.
As you can see the Roman soldiers shoe was invaluable.

The Feet Of Every Christian

What is so important about feet?

The feet of a child of God plays a very important role during the time of the early church and metaphorically today.
Jesus left His sheep with an important mission.
Mark 16:15 ESV
15 And he said to them, “Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation.
Romans 10:14–15 ESV
14 How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? 15 And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!”
If Christians were to fulfill the church’s mission back then they had to “go by way of foot” more often then not.
Acts 8:29–30 ESV
29 And the Spirit said to Philip, “Go over and join this chariot.” 30 So Philip ran to him and heard him reading Isaiah the prophet and asked, “Do you understand what you are reading?”
Acts 12:8 ESV
8 And the angel said to him, “Dress yourself and put on your sandals.” And he did so. And he said to him, “Wrap your cloak around you and follow me.”

Summery

Today, though we have a lot of ways to reach out, our feet are still an important part of “getting us to the lost.”
Our “proverbial” feet play a vital role in our fulfillment of the great commission.

The Shoe Is Prepared For The Gospel Of Peace

The gospel.

The word gospel simply means “good news.”
Thayer’s: “Good tidings, glad tidings”
The gospel is good news because of...
God’s love of man.
John 3:16 NKJV
16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
God’s blood washing away sins.
Romans 3:24–25 ESV
24 and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 25 whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God’s righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins.
Romans 5:8–10 ESV
8 but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. 9 Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God. 10 For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life.
God’s hope of eternal life.
Titus 3:7 ESV
7 so that being justified by his grace we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.

The gospel of peace.

The gospel of peace is...
With God.
Romans 5:1 ESV
1 Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.
Within ourselves.
Colossians 3:15 ESV
15 And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful.
With others.
Romans 14:19 ESV
19 So then let us pursue what makes for peace and for mutual upbuilding.

The preparation for the gospel of peace.

The word preparation simply means “ready action.”
Unfortunately many take on spiritual battles before they are properly prepared.
We can’t take the gospel of peace to anyone else if we haven’t prepared ourselves first.
Parents must prepare their kids for the spiritual war ahead.
Ephesians 6:4 ESV
4 Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.
Older Christians must prepare the younger Christians for spiritual maturity.
Titus 2:14 ESV
14 who gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people for his own possession who are zealous for good works.
God gave the apostles, preachers, elders, and teachers to prepare the saints righteous works.
Ephesians 4:11–12 ESV
11 And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, 12 to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ,
2 Timothy 2:2 ESV
2 and what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also.

The purpose of the gospel of peace.

First, to protect the Christian.
When we preach to the lost there will be many dangerous terrains we must battle on, but the gospel of peace will protect us.
Psalm 119:104 ESV
104 Through your precepts I get understanding; therefore I hate every false way.
Second, to give stability to the Christian.
Satan and sin will often come at us with the throttle wide open. When it hits us we must be stable with our footing.
Proverbs 12:3 ESV
3 No one is established by wickedness, but the root of the righteous will never be moved.
Third, to give strength to the Christian.
The better the quality of shoe the more strength it provides.
Psalm 119:28 ESV
28 My soul melts away for sorrow; strengthen me according to your word!
Fourth, to give traction to the Christian.
When sin and Satan attack it can feel like the ground beneath us is slipping away.
Psalm 18:36 ESV
36 You gave a wide place for my steps under me, and my feet did not slip.
Fifth, to give endurance to the Christian.
Shoes allow us travel longer distances with less fatigue so too it is with the shoes of the gospel of peace.
Psalm 37:34 ESV
34 Wait for the Lord and keep his way, and he will exalt you to inherit the land; you will look on when the wicked are cut off.

Summery

When God’s children prepare for the battle ahead with the gospel of peace they are ready to take on Satan and his messengers.

Conclusion

Without the shoes of the preparation of the gospel of peace we will be weak and vulnerable in the fight against our enemies.
There have been far too many that have removed their caligae before the battle has really begun and fallen from grace for us to not make sure we have the proper foot attire.
