I shall like this morning, as the Holy Spirit opens up the Word to us, to give to you all a drop of honey out of the rock.
The Psalmist in declares this about God’s Word as being reliable and that it is “more desirable than gold — than an abundance of pure gold, and sweeter than honey dripping from a honeycomb.” (v10).
Sweet honeycomb because I want you, that have deep hurts and pains that causes your head to ache and so I want you to have deeper holy comforts to quiet those hearts.
When you get to a drop of honey you want to put it in your mouth and let it sit there and roll it around in your mouth until it dissolves.
Here in we come to a storehouse of sweetness.
"After these events, the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision: Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield; your reward will be very great.” ()
This simple sentence is full, rich, and simple and so let’s try and enjoy it together.
This is God’s Word to His servant Abraham.
Do not be afraid Christ, God is our shield and your reward will be very great!
“Do not be afraid” Sinful fear is like the sickness that haunt our fertile land.
I’s like, when shall we get to higher ground and just dwell there?
Oh how tenderly does God comfort the fears of His children.
Do not be afraid, Abram.
You are all alone, but do not fear because I am with you.
You have a lot of work and labor to do, but do not be afraid, I am with you because I am your God.
Don’t fear this present.
Don’t fear the future.
Don’t fear when your friends falter nor the fury of your foes and enemies.
Be brave, calm, hopeful, trustful, joyful.
Do not fear Abram. You’ve just fought kings and won your nephew Lot back.
You were given their spoils like driven stubble.
You don’t even need to fear for you relatives, I will bless them for your sakes.
Perhaps some fear for their safety. That is met with divine assurance “Do not fear, I am your shield.”
When you have no other guard, you are shielded by your God.
Turn quickly to .
Abram had no fortress, he commanded no army, he didn’t even live in a house and yet he’s completely safe!
"When they set out, a terror from God came over the cities around them, and they did not pursue Jacob’s sons.” ()
"Today I will begin to put the fear and dread of you on the peoples everywhere under heaven. They will hear the report about you, tremble, and be in anguish because of you.’” ()
"the Lord will drive out all these nations before you, and you will drive out nations greater and stronger than you are.” () "No one will be able to stand against you; the Lord your God will put fear and dread of you in all the land where you set foot, as he has promised you.” ()
"and said to them, “I know that the Lord has given you this land and that the terror of you has fallen on us, and everyone who lives in the land is panicking because of you. "For we have heard how the Lord dried up the water of the Red Sea before you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did to Sihon and Og, the two Amorite kings you completely destroyed across the Jordan. "When we heard this, we lost heart, and everyone’s courage failed because of you, for the Lord your God is God in heaven above and on earth below.” ()
Abram’s tents that they slept in were absolutely no defence and yet no one every broke into them, no attacks on them.
He could dwell at ease behind the broad shield of the Almighty.
So, dear brothers and sisters, when we seem to have nothing visible to protect us,
what a blessing it is to know that we are guarded by the invisible and omnipotent God!
And notice also, God doesn’t say “I will shield you.” but “I” the Almighty “i am your shield, it is not alone My Power, wisdom, love which will protect you, but I Myself will be your shield.
