b. Why is brokenness an important attitude for leaders?
18 The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.
1. Signifies breaking of 1’s pride & self-sufficiency
c. How will an attitude o brokenness affect us?
17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.
Ps 51:
1. We draw closer to God when brokenness over sin makes us open to God’s grace
3 He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.
Ps 1
2. When we turn to God in brokenness HE begins to heal & restore us
5 I had heard of you by the hearing of the ear, but now my eye sees you;
6 therefore I despise myself, and repent in dust and ashes.”
3. Brokenness comes as we more clearly realize God’s holiness in contrast to our own sinfulness
d. How should I respond to brokenness?
1. When WE fall we must also fall 2 our knees 2 b restored
1 Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions.
2 Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin!
3 For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me.
4 Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight, so that you may be justified in your words and blameless in your judgment.

i. David commited adultery & murder; his response wasnt:
-run from God
-make excuses
-give up in despair
ii. David responded to his own sin by
-acknowledging God’s justice
-& casting himself on God’s mercy
2. When OTHERS fall we must come alongside them
15 When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Feed my lambs.”
i. Jesus went to Peter & gave him opportunity to unsay his denial (chance for restoration)
ii. We must come alongside others to help in the restorative process.
