Unpack the Story
Verse 7 in Hebrews is a great summary statement for us as we think about the intersection of faith and obedience.
We don’t have time to go through verse by verse Genesis chapters 6-9 today we can hit on the high points in the account to help paint the picture of Noah’s story.
In we find that human society was in awful conditions.
gives us a clear picture of what sin had done in the heart of man.
The Scripture goes on to say that
Genesis 6:6-
God saw the wickedness of man and how every impulse, desire and thought was to do wickedness.
You see this again in
The beautiful amazing creation that God had made just a few chapters ago was ruined.
You look back and you begin to understand why God said not to eat from the tree of knowledge of good and evil.
God’s judgement is about to come on the entire earth on all except Noah.
From a human perspective we read a passage of Scripture like this and we think man that seems harsh.
But we have to understand that we are worshipping Jesus who is both Lord and Saviour.
A God who is filled with both grace and truth.
We don’t get to define what God is like - otherwise we are creating a god in our own image - a golden calf an idol.
What does this passage of Scripture teach us about the Lord?
God hates sin - Sin ruins what God created to be awesome, amazing and beautiful.
Sin has consequences - God doesn’t just turn a blind eye on sin, especially when humanity is at the point where every persons thoughts, desire and impulses are willingly towards wickedness.
This God who is Saviour is also Judge.
God deserves our reverence - Rather than cause us to run away from God in fear this passage of Scripture should cause us to humble ourselves before him.
Last week I talked about how the fear of the Lord is not just reverance but a fear of missing out on the things of God.
Well this passage of Scripture shows us both sides but specifically the reverence for God.
Getting a little heavy here - one day we all will stand before the Lord Jesus and give an account for who we live and be judged.
That should cause us to have a reverence for God and cause us to walk in obedience in reverance to him.
God grants favour - despite the fact that all the world was willfully chosing to reject God’s way and live wicked, wicked lifestyles God grants favour to those who humble themselves under God’s hand and walk in reverance and obedience before God.
