For alot of churches leadership looks something like this :
Pastors, deacons, members, and each one thinks it is tere job to lead.
Churches dont move foward in this context because no one is leading and no one is following
rember last week we talked about the fact that God has called us to make a difference, and if no one leads and no one follows we cant do that.
“we don’t want the pastor to become too powerful, we don’t want the deacons to become to powerful we dont want the people to become to powerful’
and the question is being ignored how can we be waht God has called us to be and make a difference , instead theese churces have a constent suspission of others and we say”o, no they just want the power.”
The local church is made up of sinners comming together trying to be like christ.
I love me more than I love God and more than aI love you
ˆlove God so much I am willing to say no to to myself because that is what God has called us to do”
So because of theis selfishness
Pastors=Dictators
Deacons=ruling bords
Church members=b=think they have to be part of absolutly every desision and when it does not go their way they leave
So what are we supposed to do. It is amazing how quickly people freek out when desisions are made they do not quite agree with thenw we wonder why we are not moving foward.
So what do we DO
The only way to move foward is to structure leadership after the Biblical model.
If we want to get where God wants we need to do it how God says
The real boss of the church is Jesues
Colossians 1:18 ESV
18 And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent.
The problum is so many of us have come to treat churches as though they are secretly ours.
We say This is my CHurch and as long as I am here that shall never happen.
The problum is what does God say we ought to do is sometimes the verry last question in our minds.
The question is This is what I want and my preferences trup all rather than what can we accomplish for God.
Do you have a prefference this morning that is in the way of growth. Do you have a preference that is more importent than reaching the lost?
Many different denminations structure there churches differently but that is relly beside the point waht a denomination says is ilrelvent what the Bible says ought to be our focus.
Pastors are called to lead Churches
Acts 20:28 KJV 1900
28 Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.
:
He says overseers to feed the Church of God the litteral term would be elders who are called to shepard.
As Baptists we often get concerned when we hear the word elder, yet it is a Biblical term that is part of the office of the pastor.
elder, shepard, biship=3 terms same office different areas.
Some churches get it wrong where they make elders and pastors different they are all talking about the same office!
an elder ruled church is
here he calls them elders overssers and pastors
To feed the church of God=or to shepard, this is the main job of a pastor to spiritially feed his flock
To feed the church of God=or to shepard, this is the main job of a pastor to spiritially feed his flock
1 Timothy 5:17 ESV
17 Let the elders who rule well be considered worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in preaching and teaching.
There are som pastors who take this to far they view themselves as the king of the churc. that is not what is being said, simply that the pastor is responsible before God for the way he runs the church.
The pastor is not the supreeme dictator of the church.
Pastors are not to lead in a my-way or the highway model
on the flip side neither is he to lead in that he does not want to make any desissions.
1 Peter 5:1–3 NKJV
1 The elders who are among you I exhort, I who am a fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that will be revealed: 2 Shepherd the flock of God which is among you, serving as overseers, not by compulsion but willingly, not for dishonest gain but eagerly; 3 nor as being lords over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock;
notice what peter says here:
Shepard the floack, this is not an option it does not say shepard if you feel like it shepard if it is not a contriversial issue but it says you are to shepard the flock it is not an option
Pastors are the undershepard of Jesues Christ.
Peter goes on and says exersizing oversihgt not under compusion (it’s volentary) but willingly as God would have you not for shameful gain, but eagerly; 3 not domineering over those in your charge, but being examples to the flock.
The pastor is to shepard but He is to do it lovingly the leadership style is to feed and lead not to act as a king who says and people do because he said so
lets look at verse thee again
1 Peter 5:3 ESV
3 not domineering over those in your charge, but being examples to the flock.
If you are going into ministery to be a pastor and your goal is to be in charge of everything Go be CEO because you will destroy Christ’s church!
THe job of the pastor is to lead but to love some of theese churches that have pastor only parking spots drive me insane. This is why On Sunday I park at the far end of the lot because my job is not to feel special by getting the best spot but to be an example!
Pastors ought to lead by example by putting others needs before their own. they serve the flock by leading by example do I do it perfectly no, because I am a sinner, but this is who a pastor ought to be.
WHat is the point of Pastoral ministery
Ephesians 4:11–12 NKJV
11 And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, 12 for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ,
The Goal is to equip the saints for the work of the ministery
my job is to shepard and equip you to go out and do the work of the ministery it is not my job to do everything but rasther to equip you!
1 Timothy 3:1–7 KJV 1900
1 This is a true saying, If a man desire the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work. 2 A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach; 3 Not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre; but patient, not a brawler, not covetous; 4 One that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity; 5 (For if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?) 6 Not a novice, lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil. 7 Moreover he must have a good report of them which are without; lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil.
if you are going to be in ministery you need to lead by example by mimicking christ!
Pastors lead, councel, and shepard
On a sports team what does a coach do. the encourge inspire and prepare a team to play and win the game.
This is in many whays the jonb of the pastor he does not care how large the church is but how it is doing I want to see a church that is spiritually healthy. through that growth will take place but growth is not the Goal a healthy church is the goal
#1 Pastors are called to lead

Deacons are called

1 Timothy 3:8 ESV
8 Deacons likewise must be dignified, not double-tongued, not addicted to much wine, not greedy for dishonest gain.
Acts 6:1–7 ESV
1 Now in these days when the disciples were increasing in number, a complaint by the Hellenists arose against the Hebrews because their widows were being neglected in the daily distribution. 2 And the twelve summoned the full number of the disciples and said, “It is not right that we should give up preaching the word of God to serve tables. 3 Therefore, brothers, pick out from among you seven men of good repute, full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we will appoint to this duty. 4 But we will devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word.” 5 And what they said pleased the whole gathering, and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit, and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolaus, a proselyte of Antioch. 6 These they set before the apostles, and they prayed and laid their hands on them. 7 And the word of God continued to increase, and the number of the disciples multiplied greatly in Jerusalem, and a great many of the priests became obedient to the faith.
Acts
THe issue here is that the apposles and elders are spending all there time meeting needs instead of in the word of God.
The church was getting so big the pastors could not do everything st they decided to inlist people of good reputation who could assist in the waiting of tables.
The puropse was to free the pastors to do what they were called to do!
Philippians 2:1 ESV
1 So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy,
Philippians 1:1 ESV
1 Paul and Timothy, servants of Christ Jesus, To all the saints in Christ Jesus who are at Philippi, with the overseers and deacons:
Notice here paul is writting to the Church in philipi and says all the saints including the pastors and deacons
The deacons are the team mates of the pastor they are not his boss.
1 Timothy 3:8–13 ESV
8 Deacons likewise must be dignified, not double-tongued, not addicted to much wine, not greedy for dishonest gain. 9 They must hold the mystery of the faith with a clear conscience. 10 And let them also be tested first; then let them serve as deacons if they prove themselves blameless. 11 Their wives likewise must be dignified, not slanderers, but sober-minded, faithful in all things. 12 Let deacons each be the husband of one wife, managing their children and their own households well. 13 For those who serve well as deacons gain a good standing for themselves and also great confidence in the faith that is in Christ Jesus.
God has a high standard for deacons because good deacons are a blessing to a church. because they love and they serve the church.
and the deacons aid the pastor in the care for the church

Members are called to follow!

Ephesians 4:11–12 ESV
11 And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, 12 to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ,
Ephesians 4:11–13 ESV
11 And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, 12 to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, 13 until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ,
eph 4:
Eph 4:11-
The church exists to make deciples
Again rember from last week the church is not to just exist but is to make new and better deciples
Ephesians 4:13–16 ESV
13 until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ, 14 so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes. 15 Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, 16 from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love.
To help them grow- we all start as babies and we should all always be focussed on growth
Ephesians 4:11–16 ESV
11 And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, 12 to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, 13 until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ, 14 so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes. 15 Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, 16 from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love.
Guard the teaching so that good doctorine is being pushed- there is alot of false teaching and pastors are to guard against this, just because you put the name christian on something does not make it christian
Help love one another-
Through all the new testement members have a vital role in how the church is run
Acts 6:5 ESV
5 And what they said pleased the whole gathering, and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit, and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolaus, a proselyte of Antioch.
The congregation approved theese men.
if the church was elder ruled then they would have said here are those who are going to lead you will have to just deal with it.
2. They remove members
1 Corinthians 5:1–5 ESV
1 It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and of a kind that is not tolerated even among pagans, for a man has his father’s wife. 2 And you are arrogant! Ought you not rather to mourn? Let him who has done this be removed from among you. 3 For though absent in body, I am present in spirit; and as if present, I have already pronounced judgment on the one who did such a thing. 4 When you are assembled in the name of the Lord Jesus and my spirit is present, with the power of our Lord Jesus, 5 you are to deliver this man to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, so that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord.
1 Corinthians 2:5 ESV
5 so that your faith might not rest in the wisdom of men but in the power of God.
They wanted to show how tollerent they were, how sad this is that this idea still exists today many “Churches” do not confront sin but rather they want to show how tollernt they are we outh to confront sin, but we ought to do it in love.
1 cor 5:
Paul is asking what is wrong with you!
You are boasting in sin!
in verse 5 he says
1 Corinthians 5:5 ESV
5 you are to deliver this man to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, so that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord.
the goal of church dicipline should be restoration, we will address this in a few weeks, but if they do not repent, they should be remved from the church so they do not tarnish the whole body.
3. FInacially supported the ministery
1 Corinthians 16:1–3 ESV
1 Now concerning the collection for the saints: as I directed the churches of Galatia, so you also are to do. 2 On the first day of every week, each of you is to put something aside and store it up, as he may prosper, so that there will be no collecting when I come. 3 And when I arrive, I will send those whom you accredit by letter to carry your gift to Jerusalem.
The members supported the work of the ministery
4. They ratified leadership desisions
in acts 15 there was a debate in the church as to wearher the gentile believers needed to become jews the leadership determined they did not and sent a letter explaining this.
Acts 15:22 ESV
22 Then it seemed good to the apostles and the elders, with the whole church, to choose men from among them and send them to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas. They sent Judas called Barsabbas, and Silas, leading men among the brothers,
So the church agreed with the desision of the leadership
But the focus of a NT church is upon following leaders.
Hebrews 13:17 ESV
17 Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they are keeping watch over your souls, as those who will have to give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with groaning, for that would be of no advantage to you.
God calles belivers to follow leaders!
Why do we even have leaders
They see the big picture when your perspective can be limited
When you are a joy to serve you tend to get served better- I am called to be the type of pastor that is a joy to follow and you are called to be the type of people that are a joy to lead
you to will give an account for how you respond to your local church even if you have a bad pastor you do not get a free pass.
When you stand be fore christ you can not say so and so was my pastor so I get out of every bad desission Christ will say I know what you mean but you are still accountable
Acts 6:7 ESV
7 And the word of God continued to increase, and the number of the disciples multiplied greatly in Jerusalem, and a great many of the priests became obedient to the faith.
Because of Godly leadreship the word of God spread
in order to be what God wants you have to do what God says
Are we faithult to the Bible in our study
Pastors lead
deacons serve
members follow
Are we faithful in our practice
The question I have to ask is am I being what I am supposed to be
if you are a deacon are you serving the church
if you are a member are you following leadership
is part of what holds us back our attitude tward leadership. I don’t kmnow the answer to that because I have not been here long enough but I want you to ask yourelf that question what is my attitude tward the pastor what is my attidtude tward the deacons.
Are you being what God has called you to be
What if we laid aside our personal agendas and we comiited ourselves to being what God has called us to be so we can accomplish what God has called us to accomplish
What if we said its not about me
its not about my music
its not about my dress
its not about my Bible translation
its not about weather I like him or her
its about what God wants to accomplish
I had someone tell me once, not here, I did not like the worship music this morning, well, guess what it is not about what you like because the music is for him not for you!
Think of what could happen if we got down put our preferences aside and said pastors are going to lead deacons are going to serve and members are going to follow. The word of God would spred lile wildfire just as it did in the early church
Again like you have not heard this enough our job is to make new and better deciples in Silva, greenville and the surounding comunities.
