Song of Solomon 2:1–6 NASB95
1 “I am the rose of Sharon, The lily of the valleys.” 2 “Like a lily among the thorns, So is my darling among the maidens.” 3 “Like an apple tree among the trees of the forest, So is my beloved among the young men. In his shade I took great delight and sat down, And his fruit was sweet to my taste. 4 “He has brought me to his banquet hall, And his banner over me is love. 5 “Sustain me with raisin cakes, Refresh me with apples, Because I am lovesick. 6 “Let his left hand be under my head And his right hand embrace me.”
(NASB95)
The reason we were created and redeemed is to love Jesus with all our heart.
The Bride’s Admiration
1 “I am the rose of Sharon,
The lily of the valleys.”
2 “Like a lily among the thorns,
So is my darling among the maidens.”
3 “Like an apple tree among the trees of the forest,
So is my beloved among the young men.
In his shade I took great delight and sat down,
And his fruit was sweet to my taste.
4 “He has brought me to his banquet hall,
And his banner over me is love.
5 “Sustain me with raisin cakes,
Refresh me with apples,
Because I am lovesick.
6 “Let his left hand be under my head
And his right hand embrace me.”
A.
A foundational premise of God’s Kingdom is the Father’s promise to give Jesus an inheritance that He knew Jesus would greatly desire. An aspect of His inheritance involves the mandatory obedience of all creation.
Jesus wants more than this. He longs for an eternal companion or a Bride who voluntarily chooses to be equally yoked to Him in love (; ).
B.
The Bride of Christ is the great prize of all the ages that Jesus awaits. The affections of the human heart are the most precious possession to God.
Jesus died to redeem and thus, possess human affections.
The reason we were created and redeemed is to love Jesus with all our heart.
Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the issues of life.
Proverbs 4:23 NASB95
23 Watch over your heart with all diligence, For from it flow the springs of life.
The enemy come to attack the identity of the believer.
The enemy come to attack the identity of the believer.
Remember what he tells Eve, you eat of this fruit and you shall be like God.
She was already like God, created in His very image.
Our identity is formed in our security in relationship with God.
Even Jesus’. Remember when he was Baptized?
The Father spoke, This is my beloved son in whom I am well pleased.
Identity – my son
Security – my beloved
Affirmation – I am well please.
Out of this place not only do we learn to love God, but We learn to love him well.
The Bride is pictured as a beautiful rose and a pure lily.
Remember what he spoke to her in the last chapter.
Song of Solomon 1:8 NASB95
8 “If you yourself do not know, Most beautiful among women, Go forth on the trail of the flock And pasture your young goats By the tents of the shepherds.
Then she says later,
Song of Solomon 1:13 NASB95
13 “My beloved is to me a pouch of myrrh Which lies all night between my breasts.
After thinking about the way He felt about her, it change the way she felt about herself.
“I am the rose of Sharon, The lily of the valleys.”
The rose is chosen for its beauty and fragrance as the chief of flowers.
The problem is not what they say about you, the problem is if you believe them.
The rose is chosen for its beauty and fragrance as the chief of flowers.
A lily speaks of purity.
The valley speaks of the low and dark places in this fallen world.
She lives in purity in the midst of the dark valley of this fallen world.
I am the rose of Sharon, and the lily of the valleys. ()
Mike bikle says
In poetic language, the Bride declares her primary life purpose and identity as being Jesus’ inheritance.
Watchman Nee says this,
“This verse comes immediately after 1:17. This word is not spoken by the King, but by the maiden. If this word were spoken by the King, it would be hard to interpret. If this were the King's word, it would not make sense for him to say in the next verse that the maiden is a lily. "Sharon" is a plain, and the "rose" can be considered as a kind of wild lily or wild rose. This flower is considered a despicable plant in the land of Judea. The lily of the valleys is ordinary and unassuming. It is "the lily of the valleys," and not "the lily of the pot." It is not cared for by man, but by God.”

He adds
“The maiden acknowledges that she is a rose of Sharon and a lily of the valleys because the King praises her in 1:15.”
Song of Solomon 1:15 NASB95
15 “How beautiful you are, my darling, How beautiful you are! Your eyes are like doves.”
On the one hand, in 1:16-17 she praises the King, and on the other hand, she mentions rest. She mentions herself as merely being a rose of the wilderness and a lily of the valleys. This means that she is not worth anything in herself and that she is but an ordinary person cared for by God.”

Lets think about about when the father affirms Jesus..
He is then driven into the wilderness.. after fasting the devil shows up and tries to temp them.
Because of the security found in God, before he does any great works.
when the devil says,
1.
Luke 4:3 NASB95
3 And the devil said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.”
2.
luke 4:
Luke 4:7 NASB95
7 “Therefore if You worship before me, it shall all be Yours.”
He responds.. devil I don’t have to. I don’t have to impress you.. You cant make me and you cant give me anything because all that I need is inside of the fathers love.
3.
Luke 4:9 NASB95
9 And he led Him to Jerusalem and had Him stand on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down from here;
Luke 4:4 NASB95
4 And Jesus answered him, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live on bread alone.’ ”
Jesus says,
in Essence He responds..
devil I don’t have to, I don’t have to impress you..
I don’t have to impress you..
You cant make me
and you cant give me anything because all that I need is inside of the fathers love.
Watch this..
The rose and the lily are the same people identified as the Bride in
Song of Solomon 2:2 NASB95
2 “Like a lily among the thorns, So is my darling among the maidens.”
.
The king sees her as a lily among the thorns which like the valley speaks of sin.
The king sees her as a lily among the thorns which like the valley speaks of sin.
Thorns came forth as the result of the curse of Adam’s sin.
Listen, when we are in the right position with God he sees our position in the world.
There may be thorns all around but you’re a lily.
One of my favor things ive ever heard is …
“Our primary identity (value/success) is found in who we are in our intimacy with God which consists of being loved by God and in being a lover of God. I confess, ‘I am loved (by God) and I am a lover of (God/others) therefore, I am successful.”
Song of Solomon 1:3 NASB95
3 “Your oils have a pleasing fragrance, Your name is like purified oil; Therefore the maidens love you.
Song of Solomon 2:3 KJV 1900
3 As the apple tree among the trees of the wood, So is my beloved among the sons. I sat down under his shadow with great delight, And his fruit was sweet to my taste.
Song of Solomon 3:3 NASB95
3 “The watchmen who make the rounds in the city found me, And I said, ‘Have you seen him whom my soul loves?’
song 1:
song 2
I confess, “I am loved (by God) and I am a lover of (God/others) therefore, I am successful.”
verse 3 says, "As the apple tree among the trees of the wood, so is my beloved among the sons. I sat down under his shadow with great delight, and his fruit was sweet to my taste."

verse 3 says, "As the apple tree among the trees of the wood, so is my beloved among the sons. I sat down under his shadow with great delight, and his fruit was sweet to my taste."
The Bride declares that Jesus alone is the apple tree who refreshes (fully satisfies) the heart.
Like an apple tree among the trees of the woods, so is my Beloved among the sons.
in essence He stands out, or stands alone.
Now she takes her turn to compare the King to the sinners. "The sons" refer to all the things that capture one's heart, everything that is desired
Genesis 3:6 NASB95
6 When the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was desirable to make one wise, she took from its fruit and ate; and she gave also to her husband with her, and he ate.
), everything that can serve as the master of one's heart, and everyone to whom the believer's heart would turn.
everything that can serve as the master of one's heart, and everyone to whom the believer's heart would turn.
Apple here refer to refreshing
Jesus is like an apple tree among all the great men of the earth. The trees of the woods speak symbolically of the great men of the earth who tower over others as lofty trees ().
The day of the LORD of hosts shall come upon everything proud and lofty…13 on all the cedars of Lebanon that are high and lifted up, and on all the oaks of Bashan…
(DONT READ THIS VERSE)
Isaiah 2:12–13 NASB95
12 For the Lord of hosts will have a day of reckoning Against everyone who is proud and lofty And against everyone who is lifted up, That he may be abased. 13 And it will be against all the cedars of Lebanon that are lofty and lifted up, Against all the oaks of Bashan,

In his shade I took great delight and sat down,
And his fruit was sweet to my taste.
Or I sit down in your shade with great delight
"With great delight" can be translated as "joyously."
Sitting down under His shadow means being exalted, and it carries the sense of being raptured.
One is joyous because he sits under His shadow, meaning that he feels as if he is being raptured to His presence.
The shadow is in contrast to and echoes the shining of the sun in 1:6. Here is rest
"His fruit was sweet."
The eating in is somewhat different from the eating in 1:12. There the emphasis was on the Lord Himself.
Here the fruit refers to what the Lord's life and work have acquired for us, such as justification, sanctification, peace, and the coming of the Holy Spirit.
On the one hand, she rejoices at His presence.
On the other hand, she enjoys what He has acquired for her in His presence.
Every time we taste this fruit, it is sweet to our taste.
O taste and see that the LORD is good
Psalm 34:8 NASB95
8 O taste and see that the Lord is good; How blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him!
Song of Solomon 2:4 NASB95
4 “He has brought me to his banquet hall, And his banner over me is love.
Verse 4 says, "He brought me to the banqueting house, and his banner over me was love."
(NASB95)
(NASB95)
4 “He has brought me to his banquet hall,
And his banner over me is love.
Verse 4 says, "He brought me to the banqueting house, and his banner over me was love."
The banqueting house can be translated as the house of wine; it is the place where one is free to enjoy as much as he desires.
The King's bringing her in here is the second bringing (the first being in 1:4).
The enjoyment of the fruit and the banqueting house is somewhat different from the table of the King.
We are called to feast at God’s banqueting table. The fulfillment of this ultimately occurs at the Marriage Supper of the Lamb ().
Jesus wants us to enjoy tokens of that “Wedding Table” in this age by the power of the Word and the Spirit.
"His banner over me was love."
This means that love is the unfurled standard.
The whole matter relates to love.
A banner shows what one does; it is a kind of motto.
Our banner is love, which means that everything we do is based on love.
This love cover me. I can feel it.
love covers a multitude of sins.
1 Peter 4:8 NASB95
8 Above all, keep fervent in your love for one another, because love covers a multitude of sins.
1 peter 4:8
(NASB95)
Song of Solomon 2:5 NASB95
5 “Sustain me with raisin cakes, Refresh me with apples, Because I am lovesick.
(NASB95)
(NASB95)
5 “Sustain me with raisin cakes,
Refresh me with apples,
Because I am lovesick.
As the apples speak of the refreshing of Jesus (), so the raisins speak of the ministry of the Spirit since they are dried grapes.
Bikle says,
“Grapes symbolically point to the wine of the Spirit. In other words, she cries, ‘Sustain me with more of the Spirit and refresh me with more of Jesus.’”
We are called to live lovesick for God.
This caused us to have deep and even painful feeling of love and longing for more of Jesus.
When we touch this, we can never go back to “business as usual” in our walk with God. She is ruined. I will mention two aspects of spiritual lovesickness.
1. First, “feelings of love” that are very strong. We love to feel love for God.
2. Second, “spiritual hunger pains” that come because of her life vision to walk in all that God has for the human heart in this age.
God does not immediately satisfy this in us.
Thus, we have a painful even agonizing hunger. Lovesickness will not be satisfied with anything less than persevering.
These desperate hunger pains are proof that we have been touched by God.
Matthew 5:4 NASB95
4 “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

Song of Solomon 2:6 NASB95
6 “Let his left hand be under my head And his right hand embrace me.”

6 “Let his left hand be under my head
And his right hand embrace me.”
“This means He is lifting the maiden's head to behold Him.” Watchman Nee

The most natural position to embrace someone is to embrace with the right hand. The emphasis is on the protection and support of love.
The most natural position to embrace someone is to embrace with the right hand. The emphasis is on the protection and support of love.
The emphasis is not on the support of strength, but the support of intimacy.
In other words, after one has enjoyed the Lord's love, there is still the need for the support of His grace.
