United in the Majors

Going to the SEC tourney a few weeks too early and in the wrong city.
It matters to not only have a desire…but the details correct or you very well may miss the very thing you were hoping for!
It matters to not only have a desire…but the details correct or you very well may miss the very thing you were hoping for!
Paul’s concern that the people not have believed in vain comes through loud and clear again!
Typical and powerful rhetorical argument by Paul in these verses. Same one we use every day on my kids. Clean your room…your mom will be happy! Get straight A’s…you mom will be happy! Make sure the yard is mowed…mom will be happy! Do you see a pattern here?
The New Revised Standard Version The Resurrection of the Dead

If there is no resurrection of the dead, then Christ has not been raised;

14 and if Christ has not been raised, then our proclamation has been in vain and your faith has been in vain.

15 We are even found to be misrepresenting God, because we testified of God that he raised Christ—whom he did not raise if it is true that the dead are not raised.

If/ then at work here.
If Christ is proclaimed as raised from the dead…then how can you say there is no resurrection?
First world problems…people not listening to the preacher! Never happens here!!!
Paul is arguing twofold: not only for some who don’t believe in any afterlife and those who believe in an afterlife that is just spiritual and not physical. Resurrection “out of” the dead. BW3
If no resurrection…then the place you find yourself is that Christ was not raised.
If Christ was not raised…then the place you find yourself is that our work has been in vain.
If our work has been in vain…then your faith has been in vain…you’re doomed!
There is that “vain” theme again. Five times in chapter 15 (vv. 2, 10, 14, 17, 58). It matters what you believe and that you persevere in that belief.
And it continues in verse 16.
If the dead are not raised…then Christ is not raised (do you see a theme?) Repitition is a key way that Paul is getting his message across.
If Christ is not raised…then your faith is futile and you are dead in your sins.
The Message translation: 17 And if Christ weren’t raised, then all you’re doing is wandering about in the dark, as lost as ever.
Futile: 152. μάταιος mataiŏs, mat´-ah-yos; from the base of 3155; empty, i.e. (lit.) profitless, or (spec.) an idol:—vain, vanity
Idol…your faith is an idol that detracts from your relationship with God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
And not only you…but those who have perished have no hope.
And how pitiful is it for us to have only hope in this life that is full of issues (to say the least).
Three commonly held ideas that are dangerous misconceptions about Christian faith that will in fact lead us away from life eternal in heaven and life abundantly on earth.
Cleanliness is next to godliness! Not in the Bible.
Always use wedge around the green. No! Use the lowest lofted club. For amateurs anyway.
God’s favor must be earned.
Ephesians 2:8–9 NRSV
For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God— not the result of works, so that no one may boast.
Romans 3:23 NRSV
since all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God;
Romans 3:23 since all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God;
Philippians 2:8–9 NRSV
he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death— even death on a cross. Therefore God also highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name,
Ephesians 2:8–9 NRSV
For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God— not the result of works, so that no one may boast.
If God’s favor must be earned, then I must be good enough to deserve it.
2.
Acts 2:30 NRSV
Since he was a prophet, he knew that God had sworn with an oath to him that he would put one of his descendants on his throne.

2. My faith is private.
Acts 2:20 NRSV
The sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the coming of the Lord’s great and glorious day.
Acts 1:8 NRSV
But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
Acts 1:8 NRSV
But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
Matthew 5:48 NRSV
Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.
Matthew 5:11–12 NRSV
“Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
Matthew 5:13–14 NRSV
“You are the salt of the earth; but if salt has lost its taste, how can its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything, but is thrown out and trampled under foot. “You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill cannot be hid.
It is personal but never private. Always lived out in community and not in our private prayer closets alone.
3. Perfection/ Holiness is the goal.

Perfection/ Holiness is the goal.
3. Perfection or holiness is unattainable.
Matthew 5:38 NRSV
“You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’
Matthew 5:48 NRSV
Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.
2 Corinthians 7:1 NRSV
Since we have these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from every defilement of body and of spirit, making holiness perfect in the fear of God.

7:1 Since we have these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from every defilement of body and of spirit, making holiness perfect in the fear of God.

Not only right thinking but right acting that leads to abundant life. And our goal is perfection. It is the life of Christ or bust!
