Introduction
Today we come to the second sermon in our mini-series on the questions every church should ask
Last week we asked why does the church even need to grow
Last week we asked why does the church even need to grow
This week we ask who leads the church
Sadly for many churches within our circles leadership looks like this.
The church has:
1. members
2. deacons,
3. pastors
but each of them think it is their job to lead.
In this context churches do not move forward because:
1. no one leads,
2. no one follows.
When no one leads, and no one follows the church remains stagnant and does not accomplish the mission that God has called it to accomplish
Remember what we discussed last week, God has called us to make a difference and if no one leads and no one follows we cannot make a difference in the community God has pleased us in.
However, the unfortunate truth is for far too many churches leadership has become about power than about ministering to people.
The response becomes
“We don’t want the pastor to become too powerful”
“we don’t want the deacons to become too powerful”
“we don’t want the people to become to powerful”
My friends the church is not about power it is about ministry!
many churches ignore the question “How can we be what God has called is to be and make a difference”
instead they live in a state on constant suspicion of others and assume they just want power.
This should not overly surprise us though because what is the church made up of?
THis should not overly suprize us though because what is the church made up of?
The Church is made up of sinners.
The pastor is a sinner the deacons are sinners and the members are sinners.
and what appends is we say by our actions That we love ourselves more than we love God and more than we love each other.
What our response needs to be is that we are willing to say no to ourselves because God has called us to put others first.
What our response needs to be is that we are willing to say no to ourselves because God has called us to put others first.
Because of selfishness within the Church three things happen
Because of selfishness within the Church three things happen
Pastors become CEO dictators
Pastors become CEO dictators
Deacons become ruling boards
Church members think they have to be a part of absolutely every decision and when it does not go their way they leave and cause a problem in a different church instead of working out differences.
So today we are going to do something a bit different, we are not going to be in one passage of scripture but several and we are going to look at what the role is in the church for
So today we are going to do something a bit different, we are not going to be in one passage of scripture but several and we are going to look at what the role is in the church for
The pastors
The deacons
The members
As we ask this question it is amazing how quickly people get upset when a particular decision does not go the way they want it to.
and then we wonder why the church does not move forward.
Internal conflict within a church is something the devil loves.
let us resolve to push against it here!
So the question stands what is the Biblical model to Structure the church.
There are many different structures within many different
denominations, but today we are going to look at what the Bible says.
No history or denomination trumps the word of God how Christ structured the church should be how we structure the church
I. Jesus is the boss of the Church
Christ has first place in absolutely everything, as the text says
IN ALL THINGS HE MIGHT HACE THE PREEMINENCE
It does not say some things but in all things Christ is always first.
The problem is many in churches today treat the church as though they are theirs
They say this is my church and as long as I am here that shall never happen...
They say this is my church and as long as I am here that shall never happen...
The problem is what God says we ought to do is often the last question asked
The problem is we say this is what we want, and my preference is first
instead we should be asking what we can accomplish for God
So the question is this
Do you have a preference this morning that is more important to you than the spreading of the gospel?
let me be clear doctrine is not a preference! but many of us myself included have preferences we ought to put those aside for the sake of the gospel.
I do not know what your preferences may be, but I ask that you hold nothing back for the sake of the gospel of Christ.
So we understand that Christ is first in the church, but we want to ask today what is the responsibility of the

II.
Pastors are called to lead churches as Christ’s under-shepard
The text says that a pastor is an overseer to feed the church of God.
The literal term for overseer is elder
the literal term for feed here is Shepard
So the text is saying elders who are called to Shepard the church of God
As Baptists we often get concerned when we hear the word elder, yet the term is a Biblical one.
that also means pastor
three terms make up the same office
elder
Shepard
Bishop
Many churches get this wrong where they make elders and different offices but they are the same office!
lets read the verse again
notice Christ has made pastors overseers to do what?
TO feed the Church of God or to Shepard the Church of God.
This is the main job of a pastor to spiritually feed his flock!
notice the statement here—the elders who rule well
Pastors are called to administrate the church.
but it continues---especially those who labor in the preaching and teaching.
Again this is key the main job of a pastor is the preaching and teaching ministery of the church.
There are some pastors who take this verse too far.
They view themselves as the king of the church
That is simply not what is being said,
the pastor is responsible before God for how he runs the church but he is not the king or dictator
There are two extreemes that a pastor is not to do
A pastor is not to lead in a way that it is my way or the highway
A pastor is not to lead in a way that he does not want to make and desisions
Sometimes pastors have to make difficult decisions this is what we are called to do.
but a pastor is responsible to make decisions that line up with the word of God.
