Matthew 7:1 ESV
1 “Judge not, that you be not judged.
Jesus here lays out for us another command and principle of kingdom life. Just like he says in v 16 of ch 6… don’t lay up treasures on earth… where you treasure is there your heart will be also.
[One of the most taken-out-of-context verses in the Bible. Instead of a word about judgement, it often is misused as a word of justification…
I’ll do what I want and be what I want and don’t you say a word about it… don’t judge me!]
“krino” has a wide sense.... evaluate…decide…judge; criticism.
“krino” has a broad sense.... evaluate…decide…judge; criticism.
What does Jesus mean? Jesus, our Model:
John 5:22 ESV
22 For the Father judges no one, but has given all judgment to the Son,
John 5:27 ESV
27 And he has given him authority to execute judgment, because he is the Son of Man.
John
Acts 10:42 ESV
42 And he commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one appointed by God to be judge of the living and the dead.
Acts 17:30–31 ESV
30 The times of ignorance God overlooked, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent, 31 because he has fixed a day on which he will judge the world in righteousness by a man whom he has appointed; and of this he has given assurance to all by raising him from the dead.”
Acts 17
And yet, he was called:
Matthew 11:19 ESV
19 The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Look at him! A glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ Yet wisdom is justified by her deeds.”
Romans 8:1 ESV
1 There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.
KEY: The Great Judge Jesus Christ is also our Great Friend.
Knowing this sends us on our way toward a right understanding of the Message Jesus gives here in the first verses of .
Also, we don’t want to lose focus on our context… Jesus is speaking about the Kingdom of Heaven and what Life in the Kingdom is about. We’ve spoken of mercy and forgiveness and reconciliation; about showing the Light of God’s Love.
Jesus judges in Love. God’s morality stands as the great law of truth for all the world. Look back at 5:22:
Matthew 5:22 ESV
22 But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be liable to the hell of fire.
and v 29, 20.
Clear distinction be two forms of Judgement. We can see it well in:
What is right judgement?
Judge how? (Discern, Discriminate according to “right judgement”)
Clear distinction be two forms of Judgement. We can see it well in:
John 7:24 ESV
24 Do not judge by appearances, but judge with right judgment.”
Judge how? (Discern, Discriminate according to “right judgement”)
What is right judgement? And also wrong judgement?
1 Corinthians 4:3–5 ESV
3 But with me it is a very small thing that I should be judged by you or by any human court. In fact, I do not even judge myself. 4 For I am not aware of anything against myself, but I am not thereby acquitted. It is the Lord who judges me. 5 Therefore do not pronounce judgment before the time, before the Lord comes, who will bring to light the things now hidden in darkness and will disclose the purposes of the heart. Then each one will receive his commendation from God.
1 Cor
Don’t pronounce judgement… condemnation (in the full legal sense?)
This is acting as Judge in the Place of Christ, which we have no right or ability to do: [but we certainly desire to do!]
What is right judgement?
which we have no right or ability to do:
References that illuminate “judge not”
Romans 2:1 ESV
1 Therefore you have no excuse, O man, every one of you who judges. For in passing judgment on another you condemn yourself, because you, the judge, practice the very same things.
Romans 14:10–13 ESV
10 Why do you pass judgment on your brother? Or you, why do you despise your brother? For we will all stand before the judgment seat of God; 11 for it is written, “As I live, says the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God.” 12 So then each of us will give an account of himself to God. 13 Therefore let us not pass judgment on one another any longer, but rather decide never to put a stumbling block or hindrance in the way of a brother.
James 4:11–12 ESV
11 Do not speak evil against one another, brothers. The one who speaks against a brother or judges his brother, speaks evil against the law and judges the law. But if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but a judge. 12 There is only one lawgiver and judge, he who is able to save and to destroy. But who are you to judge your neighbor?
Romans 14:10:13
James
Don’t BE judgemental… an attitude. (heart; about your relationship to others)
Romans 3:23–24 ESV
23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus,
Romans 3:23 ESV
23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
Rom 3:23-
Romans 3
Romans 12:3 ESV
3 For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned.
Except to examine your own heart-attitude.
Matthew 7:2 ESV
2 For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you.
Jesus has authority and ability to Judge, not us. Therefore, when we do judge others it is not according to God’s standard. It is according to our own. This is classic Pharisee territory; define a standard that allows for what you are and condemns anyone not like you.
“for” = Is a Consequence...
vs 3,4,5 prove it: It is ultimately the sin of hypocrisy… and isn’t that one of the greatest judgements of the world against Christians today. Ask someone why the have rejected Christianity and the answer generally boils down to this: We’re seen as hypocrites.
Matthew 7:3 ESV
3 Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye?
common proverb, similar to how we might say that “people who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones.”
Matthew 7:4 ESV
4 Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when there is the log in your own eye?
Matthew 7:5 ESV
5 You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye.
Galatians 6:1–4 ESV
1 Brothers, if anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness. Keep watch on yourself, lest you too be tempted. 2 Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ. 3 For if anyone thinks he is something, when he is nothing, he deceives himself. 4 But let each one test his own work, and then his reason to boast will be in himself alone and not in his neighbor.
Romans 12:3 ESV
3 For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned.
Matthew 7:6 ESV
6 “Do not give dogs what is holy, and do not throw your pearls before pigs, lest they trample them underfoot and turn to attack you.
