Lord’s Supper

Today we will come together as the “Church” and do what has been commanded of us to do. We will take the Lord’s Supper. or communion as it is called at times. I think there are three things that we can take away from today as we look at what it should represent.
First, the Lord’s Supper shows that Jesus is our salvation. Only through Him can we have eternal life.
John 6:35 ESV
35 Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.
John 6:
John 6:47-
John 6:47–58 ESV
47 Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes has eternal life. 48 I am the bread of life. 49 Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died. 50 This is the bread that comes down from heaven, so that one may eat of it and not die. 51 I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. And the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.” 52 The Jews then disputed among themselves, saying, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?” 53 So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. 54 Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day. 55 For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. 56 Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in him. 57 As the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so whoever feeds on me, he also will live because of me. 58 This is the bread that came down from heaven, not like the bread the fathers ate, and died. Whoever feeds on this bread will live forever.”
Here Jesus was showing that the Old Covenant could not suffice. Only in the New Covenant, ( Jesus) would one have eternal life.
Sacrifice of goats and bulls was temporal, just as the manna for the Jews in the desert. Jesus was permanent, His body was bruised for us, His blood poured out to cover our sins.
John 3:16 ESV
16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
Romans 10:9 ESV
9 because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
As you take the Lord’s Supper today, reflect and give thanks that our salvation depends not in us but in Christ.
As you take the Lord’s Supper today, reflect and give thanks that our salvation depends on us but on Christ.
Second, the Lord’s Supper shows we must have a repentive heart.
1 Corinthians 11:27–30 ESV
27 Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty concerning the body and blood of the Lord. 28 Let a person examine himself, then, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup. 29 For anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the body eats and drinks judgment on himself. 30 That is why many of you are weak and ill, and some have died.
1 Corinthians 11:27-
Tell that Paul was reprimanding the Corinthians for what they were doing and how they were acting when taking the Lord’s Supper.
What sins are you harboring? What sins have you not confessed before the Lord to come with a clean heart?
Empty yourself out before the Lord, so that when you take the Lord’s Supper today, you can come with a clean, humble heart and reflect on all the Lord has done.
If you have not done this or feel you cannot repent, then I ask you not take it.
Last, the Lord’s Supper shows no matter how often, come together and do it.
Only read “Do this in remembrance of me”!
1 Corinthians 11:24 ESV
24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, “This is my body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”
1 Corinthians 11:24 ESV
24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, “This is my body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”
1 Corinthians 11:25 ESV
25 In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.”
1 Corinthians 11:26 ESV
26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.
“For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup.”
This is a command from Christ. As the body of Christ, we do this to always remind one another of the sacrifice that Christ made for His Church.
This should give us hope, and a strong desire to proclaim the gospel.
In just a few moments we are going to be obedient and take the Lord’s Supper together. I pray that each one that takes, does so with a clean heart. Remembering and giving thanks for what Jesus done.
