Open up with prayer
Read passage
25 At that time Jesus prayed this prayer: “O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, thank you for hiding these things from those who think themselves wise and clever, and for revealing them to the childlike. 26 Yes, Father, it please you to do it this way!
27”My Father has entrusted everything to me. No one truly knows the Son except the Father, and no one truly knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.”
28 Then Jesus said, “ Come to me, all you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.”
Drug story and the judgment of my family
I like this type of sermon,
Very applicational,
Very humbling
Very encouraging
Its where the rubber meets the road
It is so contrary to how we live that its stifling
upside down kingdom
Everything Jesus did was opposite
Yet it’s how it was always meant to be
Hesed
Hesed
Can you say - Hesed -
Hesed is a Hebrew word
Michael Card Author of Inexpressible states:
Character of God:
Loyalty,
mercy,
loving kindness,
meekness
humility,
enduring,
extravagant.
Some see it as the key to understanding God’s own heart. but is gods heart understandable
Jesus is hesed
Many of us use Jesus like a condiment
He flavors our lives
He adds taste
But He’s not a necessity
When we use Jesus
Things are opposite
We lose purpose
We lose the meaning to life
We lose the one relationship we need
We fall away
We feel unworthy
How many of us have ever felt unworthy?
How many times have we all felt like the outcast?
Like you’ll never measure up?
The nerd in school
The one kid thats bullied all the time
Yet like I said we are in an upside down kingdom
Everyone is equal in the eyes of God
Everyone is equal in the eyes of God
everyone is welcome in the kingdom of god
Lets look at Verse 25
New Living Translation Chapter 11
O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, thank you for hiding these things from those who think themselves wise and clever, and for revealing them to the childlike.
Context is critical
If you came to the last Bible study
Jews are persecuted beyond belief
Antiochus Epiphanes IV 167BC
Considered a forerunner to the Antichrist
Sabbath laws went crazy
Then the Romans; absolutely brutal
Caiaphas house there was even a torture chamber
it was chaotic in those days
Picture yourself as Jewish commoner
They had no shot
No hope
No chance at redemption
No escape
You were basically born to suffer or work
Then comes Jesus
speaking out against the system
He was the rebel of His time
He was the champion of the poor
he was the priest for many****
Luke 11:46
New Living Translation Chapter 11
what sorrow also awaits you experts in religious law! For you crush people with unbearable religious demands, and you never lift a finger to ease the burden.
New Living Translation Chapter 1
I will destroy the wisdom of the wise
and discard the intelligence of the intelligent.

“Blessed are the poor in spirit,
For theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are those who mourn,
For they shall be comforted.
Blessed are the meek,
For they shall inherit the earth.
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
For they shall be filled.
Blessed are the merciful,
For they shall obtain mercy.
Blessed are the pure in heart,
For they shall see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers,
For they shall be called sons of God.
Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake,
For theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
for there it shall stay
Look how jesus entered the world
shepherds were the first to witness Him
Samaritan woman the first to hear the Gospel
Jesus was everything that we are not
But I ask you how often are we put in this trap
How many times do we put other down
How often do we look at people as less valuable
How often do we place burdens on others
Ask yourself are you the person jesus is describing?
Many of us have not made perfect choices
Many of us don’t live spotless lives
Many of us have suffered a great deal
Many of us feel like we are the jewish Commoner
Gossip in the church
Sinners convicting sinners
judging everywhere
But Jesus and Hesed
Look at this passage...
Who does Jesus favor
The proud or the poor
The intelligent or the humble
The selfish or the giving
Those that hate or those that love
Jesus makes his point
27 “My Father has entrusted everything to me. No one truly knows the Son except the Father, and no one truly knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.”

Doesn’t matter how special you think you are
God will is not controlled by man
The whole concept of a holy man just doesn’t exist.
But then it switches

Weary and carry heavy burdens
Weary and carry heavy burdens
Tyndale House Publishers, Holy Bible: New Living Translation (Carol Stream, IL: Tyndale House Publishers, 2013), .Learn from Jesus
The Greek word for weary in verse 28
referring to mental exhaustion
heavy burdens
feeling unworthy
God doesn’t love me
People hate me
and yet God says otherwise
Learn from Me
Learn from Me
This is critical because Jesus commanding us Learn from him.
Dr. Larry Crab
Learn from him
I will never be happy if I am concerned with becoming happy, my overriding goal must be in every circumstance to respond biblically to put the Lord first to seek to behave as he would want me to.
Thats the BONDAGE BREAKER
Self promotion vs self denial
Sacrifice vs selfish ness
Servant leadership vs your own desires
concern for the poor
Desire to spread the Gospel
To share the love of God to the world!
Rest for your soul
Rest for your soul
Rest for your soul
Rest for your soul
How many of us could use some rest?
Ask yourself why are you so desperate to seek the approval of others
Some of us in this room don’t
praise God
Others, you crave it
Yet it seems all of us suffer from this in one way or another
Dr. Larry Crab
So much of our Christian activity is motivated by a personal desire to win someone’s approval and hence become acceptable. All the pain and problems that result from that sort of motivation are unnecessary because of the doctrine of justification by faith I am already except a bowl. I don’t need anyone’s approval. God has declared me to be OK.

What I find fascinating about this passage
the word for soul
Bible teaches we are body, soul, spirit
Thats interesting
How many of us thought soul and spirit are same?
In fact they are not
The Greek word here for Spirit is Pnuema
The greek word here for soul is Psyche
29 “Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
Earning love vs accepting love
Earning acceptance vs accepting accceptance
Its an upside down kingdom
This is a BONDAGE BREAKER
Jesus is saying in these five simple verses
My wisdom and my righteousness is not given to the boastful and the proud
I came to serve those that will humble themselves and follow me
In fact no one on either side can know who I am unless I show them
It doesn’t matter what you do, you will never equal my greatness
I have come to save you and all I ask is that you believe in me.
I don’t require another program
I don’t require more guilt
I don’t require more shame
All I ask is that you believe in what I did for you on the cross
Accept me by faith and know that I love you
I am easy to follow and I bring joy
I promise I won’t weigh you down
You may suffer along the way but it will be out of love not fear
your mind will be at ease and you will be at peace
I will give you rest
Stop seeking the approval of others and know you are already loved by the only one that truly matters.
“Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life.
I
You are already saved,
You don’t need to do anything special
Just bask in his love
share it with the world
Lets pray!
