More to dwell on: Jesus
More to dwell on: Jesus
As we continue our “Things to dwell on Series” what better thing to dwell on than Jesus. We should take time to dwell, reflect, meditate, ponder, consider Jesus. Jesus is the main focus of the entire Bible and worthy of us dwelling on Him. He is true, He is honorable, He is right and pure and the list can go on, and it will. (Php4:8-9 our theme for series)
8 Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things. 9 The things you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.
Last week we started with dwelling on God and the Bible, and Jesus is the central theme of the Bible. I don’t know if there is enough time for us to truly dwell, mediate, ponder, consider Jesus, it can be overwhelming, enlightening, encouraging, convicting, confirming, and comforting just to name a few things.
Let me ask a question
If you were going to use one word to describe Jesus, or to dwell on, what word would you use?
As we go through this, this morning I hope you can see many different words that maybe used. Years ago there was a sermon by D.M. Lockridge entitled “He’s My King: Do you know Him.” it was a very short sermon, about 4.5 minutes long. And I want to use that as a starting point today. So let me try to give this justice, and if you don’t like it, well you can look it up on YouTube and see the real thing.

The Pharisees couldn’t stand Him; they found they couldn’t stop Him
Pilate couldn’t find fault in Him; Witnesses couldn’t agree on testimonies about Him
Herod could not kill Him; death could not handle Him and the grave could not hold Him!
Now that’s my King! He always has been, always will be. He had no predecessor, and there will be no successor. There is nobody before Him and there’ll be nobody after Him. You can’t impeach Him and He’s not going to resign.
Now that’s my King; do you know Him?
Whew, that is a mouthful, now how about now moving on to scripture things about Jesus my King to dwell on.
Dwelling on Jesus
Dwelling on Jesus
Hearing all the superlatives, those adjectives, those expressions of praise are great, but they come from a place of faith and faith comes from the Word, so now let’s look at the Word.
He’s the bread of life (Jn6:33, Jn6:38; Jn6:35-37)
33 “For the bread of God is that which comes down out of heaven, and gives life to the world.”
Not doing His own will but that of the Father
38 “For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me.
He’s the Light of the World (Jn8:12; Jn11:9-10)
12 Then Jesus again spoke to them, saying, “I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life.”
He is the Light so we do not stumble
9 Jesus answered, “Are there not twelve hours in the day? If anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world. 10 “But if anyone walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him.”
But that is not it, He is the light so we don’t stumble, but He illuminates the world through us, for we are the light of Christ to the dark world.
He’s the door and the Good Shepherd (Jn10:7-11; Jn10:14)
7 So Jesus said to them again, “Truly, truly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep. 8 “All who came before Me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not hear them.
9 “I am the door; if anyone enters through Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture. 10 “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.
11 “I am the good shepherd; the good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep.
Here is another verse in which He is the good shepherd and He knows His sheep and His sheep know Him!
14 “I am the good shepherd, and I know My own and My own know Me,
He’s the resurrection; He is the way (Jn11:25; Jn14:6)
25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in Me will live even if he dies,
He is the resurrection and he is the life and He is the way
6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.
He is the vine (Jn15:1: Jn15:5; Jn8:58)
1 “I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser.
As the vine, the true vine we need to stay connected and abide in Him to bear fruit
5 “I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me and I in him, he bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing.
Stop just for a minute, look again at (v.5) it says Jesus is the true vine and by saying that what does that imply? That there are false vines, we need to know who we are connected to and how we are connected to Him. May we remember that this vine, the true vine had this to say about Himself
58 Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was born, I am.”
The “I AM” that was there in the beginning (Gen1:1; Jn1:1) who came in the flesh (Jn1:14); who went to the cross for us to be God’s perfect sacrifice (Heb10:14-22) that is who we get to draw near to, that is who we get to dwell on and rest our hope on for He is our hope (1Tim1:1)
Let me ask the question again, if you were to describe Jesus in one word, if you were to dwell, meditate, ponder, consider one quality of Jesus what would it be?
How about we look at what some others had to say when they pondered on Jesus.
Napoleon Bonaparte
“Alexander, Caesar, Charlemagne, and myself founded empires; but what foundation did we rest the creations of our genius? Upon force, but Jesus Christ founded an empire upon love; and at this hour millions would die for Him.”
H.G. Wells (author and historian)
“I am a historian, I am not a believer, but I must confess as a historian that his penniless preacher from Nazareth is irrevocably the very center of history. Jesus Christ is easily the most dominant figure in all history.”
C.S. Lewis (author)
“You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God; or else a madman or something worse. You can shut Him up for a fool, you can spit at Him and kill Him as a demon; or you can fall at His feet and call Him Lord and God.”
There was a professor of cultural history with a focus on the Roman Empire who penned these words, this poem entitled “One Solitary Life.”
(insert the poem here on separate sheet of paper already attached to back of sermon)
Jesus truly is the One who impacted the world
(Invitation slide 1)
He impacted the world because He is
The bread of life; to feed the hungry
He is light: to show the way so we don’t stumble and can light a path for others
He is the door of the sheep who protects and leads us;
He is the Good Shepherd and He knows us by name and calls us His own
He is the resurrection and the life so we can have eternal life in and through Him.
He is the vine that gives us what we need to bear fruit for Him and by Him when we stay connected to Him.
He is the great I AM
(invitation)
Have you considered Jesus and chosen to abide in Him?
Have you considered where you are with Him, are you in Him and He in you?
consider these things, dwell on these things, go back and meditate on these things.
