Blessed and Happy

Matthew 5:1–9 KJV 1900
1 And seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain: and when he was set, his disciples came unto him: 2 And he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying, 3 Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 4 Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted. 5 Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth. 6 Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled. 7 Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy. 8 Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God. 9 Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.

Fully satisfied
The word "beatitude" comes from the Latin beatitudo, meaning "blessedness." The phrase "blessed are" in each beatitude implies a current state of happiness or well-being.
This expression held powerful meaning of "divine joy and perfect happiness" to the people of the day. In other words, Jesus was saying "divinely happy and fortunate are those who possess these inward qualities." While speaking of a current "blessedness," each pronouncement also promised a future reward.
Some one said a good sermon should have a good beginning and a good ending
The secret of a good sermon is to have a good beginning and a good ending, then having the two as close together as possible.
matt 5:1-2 set the backdrop for a good sermon
Hillside - rising from the sea of Galilee between Tiberias and Capernaum
The Church of Beatitudes built in 1937 stands on this site today.
The sloping green grass makes a great place for and natural amphitheater - a great place to preach
Matthew 5:1 KJV 1900
1 And seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain: and when he was set, his disciples came unto him:
Teaches would customarily sit with their students.
The disciples closest to Christ with the multitude behind him.
The audience would hang on every word.
The opening sermon would be eight beatitudes.
Today we will look at seven and will consider the eighth separately.

I Lack of Happiness

1 Timothy 6:6–11 KJV 1900
6 But godliness with contentment is great gain. 7 For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. 8 And having food and raiment let us be therewith content. 9 But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition. 10 For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. 11 But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness.
1 Timothy 6:6–11 KJV 1900

1 Timothy 6:17–19 KJV 1900
17 Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy; 18 That they do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to distribute, willing to communicate; 19 Laying up in store for themselves a good foundation against the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life.

1 tim 6:
a) our endless pursuit of happiness
Within the heart and soul of every person is the desire to be happy.
Happiness is the sole aim for existence.
Declaration of Independence - “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness”
Most of what we do is driven by the desire to be happy.
However, our pursuit of happiness ids often met with disappointment
Proverbs 3:13 KJV 1900
13 Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, And the man that getteth understanding.
Proverbs 29:18 KJV 1900
18 Where there is no vision, the people perish: But he that keepeth the law, happy is he.
1 Peter 4:14 KJV 1900
14 If ye be reproached for the name of Christ, happy are ye; for the spirit of glory and of God resteth upon you: on their part he is evil spoken of, but on your part he is glorified.
A resent poll stated that 76% of the people living in this country are not happy.
In spite everything we do to be happ it is not working.
A resent magazine in the UK stated that Nigeria was the happiest country.
Nigeria
one of poorest countries
one of the most corrupt
live on $500/year
obviously money and wealth are not the secret to happiness

II Life of Happiness

John 13:12–17 KJV 1900
12 So after he had washed their feet, and had taken his garments, and was set down again, he said unto them, Know ye what I have done to you? 13 Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am. 14 If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another’s feet. 15 For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you. 16 Verily, verily, I say unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord; neither he that is sent greater than he that sent him. 17 If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them.
Serving people are happy
Happiness is not something you pursue but something you possess!
9 times in Jesus said your are blessed, fortunate, well off ..
a) Jesus is not talking about something superficial but something real.
Happiness does not have to be something you peruse but something you possess. IF you are not happy you are living below your privileges.
b) Perpetual Possession - - its not based on circumstances.
The happiness the word knows is on happenings.
Going good happy
vs 10 - talks about persecution - happy when persecuted?
Ecclesiastes 5:13 KJV 1900
13 There is a sore evil which I have seen under the sun, namely, riches kept for the owners thereof to their hurt.
no satisfaction here
1 John 2:15–17 KJV 1900
15 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. 17 And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.

III Laws of Happiness

Matthew 5:3–8 KJV 1900
3 Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 8 Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.
matt 5.3
Each of these beatitudes has to do with our relation to God.
If you are night right with God you will not be happy.
You can try everything this world has to offer ,but one of the secrets to happiness is being in a right relationship with God.
The first step in entering the kingdom, the first step to happiness is being poor in spirit, realizing your spiritual poverty.
The second one is mourning over it.
The third one is humbly falling down before the glory of God in your condition.
The fourth one is then pleading for a righteousness which you don't have and hunger for.
That begins then to manifest itself in an attitude of mercy toward others, a pursuit of purity and peacemaking in your own life, and creates hostility in the world. That's the flow of the Beatitudes.
The poor in spirit, the mourning, the meek, those who hunger and thirst, feel empty inside, those full of mercy, those pure in heart, those who make peace, those who are persecuted, those who are reviled, those who have all manner of evil spoken against them.  You know, that sounds to me like the biggest list of losers I ever saw.  Well, by the world’s standards they are.  The world says, “Exert yourself.  Demand your rights.  Be a bigshot.  Push yourself up.  Hold onto your pride.”
This is a different kind of a kingdom.  It even advocates persecution without retaliation and blesses those who live that way.  It’s a spiritual kingdom.  So the political aspect of this message was devastating.  It was absolutely everything was the opposite of what they expected a Messiah to say.
Its upward
Poor in Spirit
Matthew 5:3 KJV 1900
3 Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
5.
Pride has no place here - admit you sinned and throw yourself to God
You can not hide
You can not run
Some are always in despair they are hold
You want to enter His kingdom? That's where you start. This is the true diagnosis of man.
And it's only when you recognize it that you become a candidate for entrance into God's kingdom of happiness. When you see yourself as empty, poor, helpless, bankrupt, you can't contribute one single solitary thing to your salvation, you can't give God anything that in any way qualifies you for any blessing from Him, you are ptochos, not penes. You need mercy. You need grace from an outside source, from God Himself because you can bring nothing, you are destitute, beggarly, helplessly dependent.
What is Jesus saying then? Happy are the destitute, happy are the beggarly, happy are the hopelessly dependent, happy are the people who have nothing and can earn nothing. Let me tell you, folks, that's shocking stuff because it just goes right against the grain of everything the world assumes to be true.
poor in spirit - not talking about poverty
Spiritual poverty - they know they are utterly bankrupt before a holy God.
having a relationship with God starts with one recognizing they are a sinner and have nothing to offer God on their own. The poor have realized
Romans 3:23 KJV 1900
23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
Morn
Matthew 5:4 KJV 1900
4 Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.
matt
A deep sorrow for their sin. There is not only a realization of ones sinfulness , but a sorrow that brings one to God crying out for mercy
Happy is the man who confesses his sin.
matt
Happy is the man who repents. That's the comfort he's talking about. It's the comfort, listen, that comes in forgiveness. When the sinner comes to the place of recognizing spiritual bankruptcy, when the sinner comes to the place of grief, deep grief, deep sorrow over sin, and comes before God in penitence and asks for mercy and grace, he receives the comfort of forgiveness...the comfort of forgiveness
Meek
Matthew 5:5 KJV 1900
5 Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.
Not describing one who is quiet or cowardly. The word jesus used has the idea of taming or domesticating a wilds animal.
The thought is that of submission , a placing of the life under God’s authority .
Submission to God’s authority
Hungry
Matthew 5:6 KJV 1900
6 Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.
They desire to serve and God and please him in all things. A great passion of living a righteous and holy life.
They desire to serve and God and please him in all things. A great passion of living a righteous and holy life.
Mercy
Matthew 5:7 KJV 1900
7 Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.
God identifies with destitute people.  And the merciful are those who reach out.  Not those who grasp and take.  God help us somehow to be able to overrule the inundation of a corrupt society that tells us to get everything we can get and hear the voice of our God who tells us to give everything we can give.  We are to be merciful.  If somebody offends you, be merciful.  If somebody does something against you, be merciful.  Be compassionate, be benevolent, be sympathetic.  If somebody makes a mistake or a misjudgment or if somebody fails to pay a debt or return something they’ve borrowed or something, be merciful.  That’s the character of the kingdom.
Pure in Heart
Matthew 5:8 KJV 1900
8 Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.
The Greek word for “pure” in is katharos. It means to be “clean, blameless, unstained from guilt.” Interestingly, the word can refer specifically to that which is purified by fire or by pruning.
John the Baptist told people that Jesus would baptize with the Holy Spirit and fire ().
Malachi speaks of the Messiah as being like a “refiner’s fire” ().
Jesus refers to believers as being the branches and to Himself as being the vine (). For a vine to produce fruit, it must be pruned. Those who are truly “pure,” then, are those who have been declared innocent because of the work of Jesus and who are being sanctified by His refining fire and His pruning.
The Greek word for “heart” in is kardeeah. This can be applied to the physical heart. But it also refers to the spiritual center of life. It is where thoughts, desires, sense of purpose, will, understanding, and character reside. So, to be pure in heart means to be blameless in who we actually are.
Being pure in heart involves having a singleness of heart toward God. A pure heart has no hypocrisy, no guile, no hidden motives. The pure heart is marked by transparency and an uncompromising desire to please God in all things. It is more than an external purity of behavior; it is an internal purity of soul.
Peacemakers
Matthew 5:9 KJV 1900
9 Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God.

The Bible says we have peace with God through
Jesus Christ. Reconciliation through Christ brings restored fellowship (peace) with God. says God entrusts us with this same message of reconciliation to take to others.
The aspects of happiness are brokenness over sin totally dependent on God and desiring a righteous life. The results will be a right relationship with brothers/sisters, giving mercy to those that have harmed us and reconciliation with others ...
Are you blessed or happy ....
