Intro
Two years ago Mitchelle had her life change with one question.
Mitchelle was a successful woman, she seemed to have everything going for her.
She was able to land a good job early in life, she worked her way up with several promotions and with that came great paychecks.
At 31 she bought her own house and at 32 she bought herself a BMW.. it was a used one but it was hers.
And her theme song for life at the time was… INDEPENDENT… she got her own house she got her own car, two jobs work hard she...
But even with the good job, her own house and car… she wasn’t happy and she found herself sitting on a couch in a therapist office after another bad relationship had come to an end.
Mitchelle wanted to know what was wrong with her and why she couldn’t find a good man.
The therapist asked her one question that changed her life.
“What of yourself did you see in him?”
The question made her pause.
She thought about it.
She was happy when she was with him, but did she see herself in him?
In the decisions he made?
In the way he behaved or thought about people and relationships?
And her answer was NO!
The therapist said, “if he didn’t reflect your values then why were you with him?”
And her answer was, I was happy because I was with “someone”.
Sometimes our desire to be with someone causes us to settle for being with anyone.
I think one of the most important questions to ask yourself in every relationship is, do our values align.
And when I talk about values aligning I”m not just talking about y’all liking the same type of movies or music or politics… it’s deeper than that.
Values deals with the core beliefs that govern how you live.
A value is the worth and importance that you assign to a certain belief, activity or event.
And one of the most important questions you can ask yourself in every relationship is do our values align?
And for somebody here this morning, I’m already on your street, knocking at your door.
Somebody this morning is thinking to themselves… Lord I wish I would have heard this 10yrs ago… Lord I wish I would have heard this before I met her.
If I would have thought about this I would have never messed with him.
Some of us learned this the hard way.
Our text this morning helps us understand the danger of miss-aligned values.
Here we are in the book of 1 Kings
The books of Kings follow on from the books of Samuel, and are intended to be read together with them.
In the Hebrew Bible, the books of Kings complete a story which began way back in the time of Joshua.
The books of Joshua, Judges, Samuel and Kings are known as ‘the Former Prophets’.
These are the history books which tell the story of Israel from the arrival of the tribes in the Promised Land to the eventual loss of the land and Judah’s exile in Babylon.
They may have been written, edited or compiled during the years of exile.
In the history of Israel we see a sense of God’s purpose for HIs people.
God made a covenant with Israel, giving them His law, His standards and promising His blessings.
It’s in the book of Deuteronomy that we learn that obedience and blessings go together.
And 1 Kings shows us that you can mess up your blessings by miss-aligning your values.
One of the most famous stories in 1 Kings is the story of Elijah and facing the 450 prophets of Baal.
It’s found in 1 Kings 18 where we see Elijah as the lone prophet of God standing against the 450 prophets of Baal and they were the agents of the State.
They were representing the state sanctioned religion.
The other prophets of God had be killed are were in hiding.
The story is famous because we see Elijah pray and ask God to send down fire from heaven to prove that the God of the Bible is God.
And while this is an amazing scene and the people look on in awe.
We’ve got to ask the question how in the world… did it get to the point in the life of Israel, God’s chosen people, the people He’s blessed with land.
The people that He’s provided for… how in the world did Baal worship become the state sanctioned worship, how did they get so far off course?
Well I’m glad you asked, it all started with a Marriage and miss-aligned values.
Our text this morning shows us Ahab the son of Omri as he coronated as King of Israel.
And then for political reasons he married Jezebel of Ethbaal the king of the Sidonians and after marrying her he started serving and worshiping Baal.
Three quick things this text is tailored to teach us.
The first thing is “you need to know your values.”
I. Know Your Values
Value is the worth and importance that you assign to a certain belief, activity or event.
Ahab was surrounded by believers but he wasn’t secure in his own belief.
And if you don’t know what you believe somebody else can easily confidence you to belief what they want you to.
Ahab saw the religious activities of his people but he didn’t understand it enough to value it.
Ahab saw the yearly festivals to honor God but for Ahab they were not important.
And because he did not know his values he ended up destroying the blessing and prosperity of his nation.
Listen can I save you some heartache and heartbreak?
When it comes to relationships you need to be real sure of what’s important to you....
