In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made.
Jesus is the Word
He is Eternal
-He existed prior to all of creation, before angels, demons, water, sky, animals, man, etc.
-He always has been and always will be. Not starting point, no end point (like a line in Geometry)
b. He is God
He
I and the Father are one.”
i. Jesus reveals God to mankind
Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?
c. Jesus is the source of life
i. physically
ii. spiritually
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
2. Jesus is a distinct Person from God, but one with Him.

a. There is one God
Exodus
“I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.
“You shall have no other gods before me.

b. God the Father, God the Son, and God the Spirit are all working and present at creation
In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.
Genesis 1:1-
Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”
c. All are present at the baptism of Jesus
Matthew 3:
And when Jesus was baptized, immediately he went up from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him; and behold, a voice from heaven said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”
“The doctrine of the Trinity is a deep mystery, but it is fundamental in Christianity.” The Pulpit Commentary
3. Resist the urge to limit Christ’s Deity
d.
a. The very idea of a creater/God is counter cultural
-Adam and Eve rebel against God
-David Platt in “Counter Cultural”
“Here we see God’s holiness, goodness, justice, and grace on display. God has authority to define what is right and wrong, good and evil, based upon his pure and holy character. God makes clear to man that he will be judged based upon his obedience to the command God has given. God’s grace is evident, for he does not hide his law. In love, God tells man the way to life and exhorts him to walk in it. So how does the created respond to the Creator?

-Sometime in the garden, Adam and Eve begin to question who God is. Through their actions they essentially say, who has given God the right to tell us what to do.
b. We are tempted to make God fit our ideas
-Example- The Jefferson Bible.
-His Lordship is not a
-Thomas Jefferson cut verses out of the Bible and essentially pasted together a Bible and narrative that fit his ideas of who God and Jesus should be.
c. Jesus is Lord
-When we limit the deity of Christ, we limit the effect Jesus should have in our life.
-Jesus’ lordship is not up for debate. He is Lord whether we recognize it or not.
