Acts 2:1–4 ESV
When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.

Review

Part 1 - The Promise of the Father
The Holy Spirit was promised for the last days
Part 2 - The Holy Spirit and the Power
The Holy Spirit came with power for witnessing
The power was demonstrated in (1.) speaking in other tongues; (2.) signs and wonders; and (3.) endurance in the midst of trials and persecution.
Part 3 - Main Arguments
What is the role of the Holy in the Church?
How is the presence of the Holy Spirit in the church demonstrated?

The Holy Spirit as the “Helper”

When Jesus announced the coming of the Holy Spirit, He also described its working.
The Holy Spirit will abide forever.
John 14:16–17 ESV
And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.
to “be” - to exist, to happen
“to be” means to exist as “helper who goes with you”
to exist as “helper who goes with you”
Helper - grk. parakletos, one called alongside to help
translated - comforter, advocate, helper
The Holy Spirit will teach.
John 14:26 ESV
But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.
teach - grk. didasko, instruct, teach; to impart skills or knowledge
John 14.26
Teacher - grk. didaskalos
The Holy Spirit will bear witness.
John 15:26 ESV
“But when the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will bear witness about me.
bear witness - grk. martyreo, to solemnly assert something by offering firsthand authentication to the fact
The Holy Spirit is the living and true witness to Jesus Christ - His life, death, resurrection and work in heaven
The Holy Spirit will guide.
John 16:13 ESV
When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.
guide - grk. hodegeo, to be a guiding or motivating force for someone’s actions
The Holy Spirit will motivate the believers to receive and obey the truth that the Holy Spirit itself will reveal to them.
WHAT’S THE POINT?
THE HOLY SPIRIT IS NOT MERELY PRESENT IN THE LIFE OF THE BELIEVER, BUT AN ACTIVE COMPANION IN HIS/HER LIFE!
THE HOLY SPIRIT IS WITH US TO ACCOMPANY US IN THIS LIFE, AS WELL AS TO TEACH AND TO GUIDE US INTO ALL THINGS TRUE AND RIGHT.
THE HOLY SPIRIT IS WITH US TO TEACH AND TO GUIDE US INTO ALL THINGS TRUE AND RIGHT.

The Outpouring at Pentecost

What happened at Pentecost?
Acts 2:1–4 ESV
When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.
The event on the day of Pentecost was both a “baptism” and a “filling” of the Holy Spirit for the church.
Jesus said they will be baptized with the Holy Spirit soon -
Baptism - immersion; used as initiation rite for joining or becoming part of a group
On this day they were “filled” with the Holy Spirit.
Fill - grk. pimplemi, to be supplied generously
from grk. pleroo, to be full
WHAT’S THE POINT?
BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT HAS TWO APPLICATIONS:
THE INITIAL EXPERIENCE OF BEING FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT.
BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT IS THE INITIAL EXPERIENCE OF BEING FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT.
THE GIVING OUT OF THE HOLY SPIRIT TO AS MANY AS WILL BELIEVE THROUGHOUT THE DISPENSATION.
THE FILLING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT IS THE EXPERIENCE OF HAVING ONE’S WHOLE BEING SATURATED BY THE HOLY SPIRIT, RESULTING IN CERTAIN PHYSICAL MANIFESTATIONS.
The Holy Spirit filled both the house and the people.
Verse 2 - it filled the entire house
Verse 2 - they were all filled with the Holy Spirit
Acts 4.
See also -
Acts 4:31 ESV
And when they had prayed, the place in which they were gathered together was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and continued to speak the word of God with boldness.
The filling of the Holy Spirit was both “seen” and “heard” by the public.
,
Acts 2:6 ESV
And at this sound the multitude came together, and they were bewildered, because each one was hearing them speak in his own language.
Acts 2:12–13 ESV
And all were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “What does this mean?” But others mocking said, “They are filled with new wine.”
Acts 2.
Peter stood up and explained to the public what was happening.
Acts 2:32–33 ESV
This Jesus God raised up, and of that we all are witnesses. Being therefore exalted at the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he has poured out this that you yourselves are seeing and hearing.
Acts 2.33-34
WHAT’S THE POINT?
THE FILLING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT IS NOT A SILENT EXPERIENCE NOR AN INVISIBLE EVENT!

The Holy Spirit-filled People

The Church demonstrated how a Spirit-filled church walks
They boldly proclaimed and defended the gospel in every occasion
at Pentecost -
before the rulers of Israel -
after being persecuted -
They boldly rebuked the enemies of the faith
Elymas the magician -
the Jews who stirred up persecution against Paul and Barnabas -
They helped the apostles in the ministry
the 7 “deacons” -
Barnabas in Antioch -
The Church moved under the direction of the Holy Spirit
When they began their missionary works -
When they needed wise judgment concerning the Gentile believers -
When they appointed overseers -
WHAT’S THE POINT?
A CHURCH THAT IS FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT WILL NOT BE INVISIBLE TO THE PUBLIC FOR LONG. THE HOLY SPIRIT HIMSELF WILL DRIVE YOU OUT OF YOUR HIDING INTO THE PUBLIC EYE.
A SPIRIT-FILLED CHURCH IS FOCUSED ON THE WORK OF MINISTRY AND NOT ON SOCIAL OCCASIONS AND GATHERINGS.
THE HOLY SPIRIT WILL NOT LEAD THE CHURCH TO SOCIAL ACTIVITIES AND EVENTS.
THE HOLY SPIRIT IS CONCERNED WITH (1) TEACHING THE CHURCH, AND (2) GUIDING THE CHURCH INTO ALL TRUTH.
TEACHING THE CHURCH
GUIDING THE CHURCH INTO ALL TRUTH

Conclusion

THE TRUE CHURCH IS ONE THAT IS UNDER THE DIRECTION OF THE HOLY SPIRIT.
THE HOLY SPIRIT WILL MANIFEST HIMSELF CORPORATELY AS WELL AS INDIVIDUALLY
THE GATHERING OF THE BELIEVERS IS THE PLACE TO BE FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT.
THE SPIRIT-FILLED CHURCH WILL NOT HIDE BEHIND THE WALLS OF A CHURCH BUILDING.
SHE IS NOT AFRAID TO STEP OUT INTO PUBLIC EYES AND BOLDLY PROCLAIM CHRIST!
