This is a “catch-phrase” that has drawn a lot of attention in recent years. Many claim to be “born again” Christians. And the claim is understandable, Jesus says it is necessary (). But, what does this phrase mean and do the people claiming it truly understand what they claim?
Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. This man came to Jesus by night and said to him, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God, for no one can do these signs that you do unless God is with him.” Jesus answered him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.” Nicodemus said to him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?” Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’ The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.”
I) Things it does not mean
I) Things it does not mean
Not physical rebirth – v.4 – that is what confused Nicodemus
Nor does it mean the “first” spiritual birth – – mankind is already born with a spirit
then the Lord God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature.
Nor is it a feeling “better felt than told”, or some experience; there is no Biblical record of such a response from any convert
Although a new life will change us – ;
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.
to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.
It means what Jesus says it does – vs.5-6 – being born of water and Spirit, it is a spiritual birth, not fleshly
II) Water
II) Water
Baptism requires water – ;
And as they were going along the road they came to some water, and the eunuch said, “See, here is water! What prevents me from being baptized?”
John also was baptizing at Aenon near Salim, because water was plentiful there, and people were coming and being baptized
Why water? – – perhaps as an antitype to the destruction in the days of Noah – ; – perhaps to complete the symbol of washing away of sin – – perhaps to connect with the symbol of burial – – perhaps we are not meant to know
Baptism, which corresponds to this, now saves you, not as a removal of dirt from the body but as an appeal to God for a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ,
he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit,
And now why do you wait? Rise and be baptized and wash away your sins, calling on his name.’
Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.
“The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but the things that are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law.
Baptism puts one into Christ – – made alive in Christ – – through baptism – ;
For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.
For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive.
having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through faith in the powerful working of God, who raised him from the dead. And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses,
Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.
For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. For one who has died has been set free from sin. Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him.
III) Spirit
III) Spirit
Baptized by Spirit – ; – which is the real source of the power that saves us; this is also why it doesn’t matter who baptizes us physically, since it is the power of the Holy Spirit that baptizes us into Christ
For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and all were made to drink of one Spirit.
And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
Therefore the Spirit dwells in us – – and continues to give us life – ;
By the Holy Spirit who dwells within us, guard the good deposit entrusted to you.
But if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness. If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you.
So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day.
IV) Blood
IV) Blood
What about the blood of Jesus, which the Bible tells us cleanses us from sin? – ; ;
and from Jesus Christ the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of kings on earth.
To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood
knowing that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot.
But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.
Three are in agreement – – which “connects all the dots” and confirms the connections we have drawn today
For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith. Who is it that overcomes the world except the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?
This is he who came by water and blood—Jesus Christ; not by the water only but by the water and the blood. And the Spirit is the one who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth. For there are three that testify: the Spirit and the water and the blood; and these three agree.
Concl: Since we must be born again, we need to know what it is. It is water baptism, a burial to walk a new life in Jesus Christ. The new birth cannot happen before the birthing process, nor can we live a new life without being born again.
