Paul is instructing us to put on the clothes of the new man that we are now that we’ve become followers of Christ.
A liar() so we speak truth (vs. 25)
The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.
He’s cleaned us up (cleansed us of our sin)
Satan is a thief...
In eternity past, he attempted to steal God’s glory
He enticed Eve to steal the fruit in the garden.
It makes no sense to put on our dirty old clothes.
In turn, she got Adam to steal the fruit.
That original sin was disobedience, but specifically it was theft.
Satan not only tries to get us to lie, he tries to get us to steal.
Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth.
Paul is writing to believers - don’t steal (the 8th commandment - kind of a given don’t you think)
Don’t rob the bank
Don’t break into that house and take the big screen T.V.
-Maybe not going into a store and taking something from the shelf and walking out without paying...
Ways in which Christians can steal...
Ways in which Christians can steal...
By defrauding employers
Servants, be obedient to them that are your masters according to the flesh, with fear and trembling, in singleness of your heart, as unto Christ; Not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but as the servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart;
By defaulting on a loan
The wicked borroweth, and payeth not again: But the righteous sheweth mercy, and giveth.
By deceptive business practices
Divers weights are an abomination unto the Lord; And a false balance is not good.
By delaying payment
Withhold not good from them to whom it is due, When it is in the power of thine hand to do it.
By denying the government
Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour.
By depriving the church
But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.
Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings.
Better is the poor that walketh in his integrity, Than he that is perverse in his lips, and is a fool.
Better is a little with righteousness Than great revenues without right.
I must remember...
I must remember...
I’m being watched by God
I’m being watched by God
For the ways of man are before the eyes of the Lord, And he pondereth all his goings.
I’m being watched by my children
I’m being watched by my children
The just man walketh in his integrity: His children are blessed after him.
I’m being watched by the lost
I’m being watched by the lost
Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.
The Mandate for Work
The Mandate for Work
Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth.
A believer who doesn’t work is doing the work of an unbeliever.
A believer who doesn’t work is doing the work of an unbeliever.
But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel.
A believer who refuses to work should be refused assistance.
A believer who refuses to work should be refused assistance.
For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat.
A believer who is not busy becomes a busybody.
A believer who is not busy becomes a busybody.
For we hear that there are some which walk among you disorderly, working not at all, but are busybodies. Now them that are such we command and exhort by our Lord Jesus Christ, that with quietness they work, and eat their own bread.
The Motive for Work
The Motive for Work
Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth.
I have coveted no man’s silver, or gold, or apparel. Yea, ye yourselves know, that these hands have ministered unto my necessities, and to them that were with me. I have shewed you all things, how that so labouring ye ought to support the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, It is more blessed to give than to receive.
Acts 20:33-35
The more you grow as a Christian, the more your attitude shifts from a “taker” to a “giver”
The more you grow as a Christian, the more your attitude shifts from a “taker” to a “giver”
Why is this idea of giving (not stealing) so important?
Because the new man is to be conformed into the image of God…God by His nature is giving!
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?
J
Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.
So who are we most reflecting...
Satan - a thief (who comes to steal your life)
The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.
God - the giver (who comes to give you life)
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
