True In-Sight
I. Me and We
II. God
John 9:24 NRSV
So for the second time they called the man who had been blind, and they said to him, “Give glory to God! We know that this man is a sinner.”
“Give glory to God” - tell the truth…confess your lie....
John 9:25 NRSV
He answered, “I do not know whether he is a sinner. One thing I do know, that though I was blind, now I see.”
Simple and to the point testimony.
Are we fearful to share our testimony because we might not have one?
[N. T. Wright quote from last week]
What does it mean to be transformed?
(( Jesus isn’t calling them, or us, to believe…he’s calling us to be transformed....))
John 9:26–27 NRSV
They said to him, “What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?” He answered them, “I have told you already, and you would not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you also want to become his disciples?”
John 9:
The man has some boldness here....or perhaps…he’s tired of going through it…it was clear enough what happened.
Of course, they are trying to trip him up…but his experience…is his experience and there’s nothing they can say to change it.
John 9:28–29 NRSV
Then they reviled him, saying, “You are his disciple, but we are disciples of Moses. We know that God has spoken to Moses, but as for this man, we do not know where he comes from.”
Disciples of Moses…yet Moses wrote of Jesus.
John 9:28-
They don’t know where he comes from…(he has said)…one of the beliefs about the Messiah.
John 9:30 NRSV
The man answered, “Here is an astonishing thing! You do not know where he comes from, and yet he opened my eyes.
While the leaders weren’t amazed at this miracle of the Blind man being made to see…the Blind man is amazed at those who can see and how blind they are!
John 9:31–32 NRSV
We know that God does not listen to sinners, but he does listen to one who worships him and obeys his will. Never since the world began has it been heard that anyone opened the eyes of a person born blind.
John 9:31–33 NRSV
We know that God does not listen to sinners, but he does listen to one who worships him and obeys his will. Never since the world began has it been heard that anyone opened the eyes of a person born blind. If this man were not from God, he could do nothing.”
John 9:30-31
While the man’s theology may not be exactly correct, his point is well taken. While the blind might have been able to be healed…someone born blind? That has never happened.
John 9:33
The old testament has people like the Egyptian magicians performing seemingly miracltes, but this is a different situation alltogether!
John 9:34 NRSV
They answered him, “You were born entirely in sins, and are you trying to teach us?” And they drove him out.
III. You and Us
A. Transformation
Jesus doesn’t call us to believe, but to be transformed.
I once was blind, but now I see.
From “I once was blind”. To: “now I see”. Through: Jesus’ touch (healing).
From anger to acceptance.
