Bible Memory:

John 10:10 ESV
The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.
last week:
power of our thougths
when we learn to set our minds on things above we can set our lives on God’s path
A negative mind will not lead to a positive life
we talked about learning the truth of God’s Word so that we can identify what God has for our lives and what areas we are not living an abundant life
Ezek
Ezekiel 37:1–10 ESV
The hand of the Lord was upon me, and he brought me out in the Spirit of the Lord and set me down in the middle of the valley; it was full of bones. And he led me around among them, and behold, there were very many on the surface of the valley, and behold, they were very dry. And he said to me, “Son of man, can these bones live?” And I answered, “O Lord God, you know.” Then he said to me, “Prophesy over these bones, and say to them, O dry bones, hear the word of the Lord. Thus says the Lord God to these bones: Behold, I will cause breath to enter you, and you shall live. And I will lay sinews upon you, and will cause flesh to come upon you, and cover you with skin, and put breath in you, and you shall live, and you shall know that I am the Lord.” So I prophesied as I was commanded. And as I prophesied, there was a sound, and behold, a rattling, and the bones came together, bone to its bone. And I looked, and behold, there were sinews on them, and flesh had come upon them, and skin had covered them. But there was no breath in them. Then he said to me, “Prophesy to the breath; prophesy, son of man, and say to the breath, Thus says the Lord God: Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe on these slain, that they may live.” So I prophesied as he commanded me, and the breath came into them, and they lived and stood on their feet, an exceedingly great army.
today I want us to learn not only to think life but to SPEAK LIFE
we know the truth of God’s Word now let us speak that truth
Matthew 15:10–11 NLT
Then Jesus called to the crowd to come and hear. “Listen,” he said, “and try to understand. It’s not what goes into your mouth that defiles you; you are defiled by the words that come out of your mouth.”
the average person speaks 5,000 words a day
you may not be average ...
we will have to give an account for every idle word!
Matthew 12:36 NLT
And I tell you this, you must give an account on judgment day for every idle word you speak.
What is God saying?
If Jesus is the Lord of your life than He needs to be the Lord of your lips too!
Your words impact your relationship with God
an example is how we respond when we are upset
use God’s name in vain
he commanded for us not to do that
Exodus 20:7 ESV
“You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain.
Ex
you will answer to God for that so Christians you need to stop using God’s Name as an expression of disappointment
The Bible goes on to teach
James 3:10 NLT
And so blessing and cursing come pouring out of the same mouth. Surely, my brothers and sisters, this is not right!
He says that we shouldn’t do that
James 1:8 ESV
he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.
Philippians 4:8 NLT
And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.
Ephesians 5:4 ESV
Let there be no filthiness nor foolish talk nor crude joking, which are out of place, but instead let there be thanksgiving.
God’s Word says that for Christians there are types of talk that are “out of place”
Proverbs 10:11 ESV
The mouth of the righteous is a fountain of life, but the mouth of the wicked conceals violence.
Proverbs 4:23 ESV
Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life.
Why is Jesus so hung up on what we say?
Proverbs 10:11 ESV
The mouth of the righteous is a fountain of life, but the mouth of the wicked conceals violence.
Matthew 12:34 ESV
You brood of vipers! How can you speak good, when you are evil? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.
because He knows that what we speak is a reflection of what we believe and desire...
Do your words point to a strong and healthy relationship with God?
what if God had access to your FB?
Instagram?
Your words impact other people
Ephesians 4:29 NLT
Don’t use foul or abusive language. Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them.
Not just avoid foul but abusive language
it is hurtful to others
your children
parents
coworkers
rude people in line
speaking abusively towards them is hurtufl
passive agressive
withholding information or thoughts for sake of power or control
blaming someone for something outside of their control
name calling or labeling - even if you think that it’s true
As Christians we are called to speak in a way that is encouraging
what is encouraging?
not only telling them when they are right but also helping them correct what is wrong in a loving and respectful way
we have taken this to mean that we cannot be confrontational as Christians but this is a lie
look at Jesus’ life
we must learn to speak truth in love and not hide from things that are broken
{P
Proverbs 18:21 ESV
Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits.
we have so much power given to us through words… let us be responsible with the power that we have been given
Let every word you speak be drenched with grace and tempered with truth and clarity.
“Be Kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle” — John Watson
“I can live for two months on a good compliment” — Mark Twain
James 3:3–5 NLT
We can make a large horse go wherever we want by means of a small bit in its mouth. And a small rudder makes a huge ship turn wherever the pilot chooses to go, even though the winds are strong. In the same way, the tongue is a small thing that makes grand speeches. But a tiny spark can set a great forest on fire.
Colossians 4:6 The Message
Be gracious in your speech. The goal is to bring out the best in others in a conversation, not put them down, not cut them out.
Words create atmosphere
Atmosphere of expectation is a breeding ground for the work of God
Jesus would not do miracles where there was no faith
when we learn this we can learn encourage change to those around us who need to experience change in their lives
Words impact our personal thougths
You have been taught to treat others the way that you want to be treated...
why don’t you start treating yourself the way that you want to be treated?
The person that you talk to the most is yourself
Don’t be your critic, be your coach!
Words can unlock a life you love or a life you loathe
when your words are full of faith impossible things can be done
Psalm 43:5 NLT
Why am I discouraged? Why is my heart so sad? I will put my hope in God! I will praise him again— my Savior and my God!
praise God for what He has done and what He is doing
1 Thessalonians 5:18 NLT
Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus.
but don’t just think it, speak it...
Psalm 107:2 ESV
Let the redeemed of the Lord say so, whom he has redeemed from trouble
this could change your life
the anti-depressant Wellbutrin boosts the neurotransmitter dopamine and prozac increases your level of serotonin — Gratitude does both
research shows that something as simple as writing down 5 things that you are grateful for once a week can boost your happiness up to 25%!
the words you say affect you and your emotional and spiritual well being
so speak life into yourself
