The last Five weeks we have been going through a series together entitled “Made for Mission” during that time we have discovered that
We are Called in Relationship with Christ through Faith and true repentance of our sins - Matt.9
We are Called for a Mission a mission that Christ started and continues by working in the Christians life. - Luke 9
We are Called to share a Message the message of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. - Mark 5
We are Called to Share that message to everyone, everywhere.
And so today we continue in this series by asking this question… Who’s Coming with You?
You are on a journey. It’s a journey you are not meant to travel alone. We are called to share our story, share our faith and share the life change we have through Christ. We have been given a mission to Go and Make disciples and raise up people to walk this road with us. You are on a journey…who’s coming with you?
Matthew 28:19–20 NKJV
Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.
This Scripture is known as the “Great Commission” because it tells us what we are to be about as a church.
Many people mistakenly believe that this is solely about soul winning or witnessing, but there is much more to this commission than that.
Jesus commands us to make disciples.
But what is a disciple?
DISCIPLE - A student, pupil, or learner. In the New Testament it is used for Jesus’ followers
Jesus clearly expected those He taught to go out and share His truth with others, to plant seeds of faith in other people’s lives.
I want to talk to you about what that means and then give you several ways you can apply this commission to your life today.
I want us to focus our attention on three words in this commission. GO, MAKE DISCIPLES.
First, let’s turn our attention to what it means to “go”.
GO means I should be actively seeking others to disciple.
If you look at Matthew 13:3-9, Jesus tells the parable about a farmer going out to sow seed. He goes out and throws the seed on 4 different types of soil.
In the process, some of that seed would fall on different types of soil. Some might fall along the foot path, still others on the soil to the side of the garden that might not have been cultivated. Still, the farmer would actively go out and plant seed, knowing that not all of it would bear fruit. But, you can’t expect a harvest if seeds aren’t planted.
Planting seeds can be frustrating work. In this parable, 3/4 of the seeds don’t bear fruit at all. Sometimes working with people is like that.
You witness, share your faith them, love them as Christ loves them, and you see no results.
We aren’t to worry about the seeds growing. We don’t dig up the seeds and examine them to see if they are growing. We just trust God to be faithful to work as His Word is taught and as we are faithful to do the work God has called us to do.
now that is going, by scattering the seed, God’s word, and trusting God for the results. When the results come, be ready for the next phase…and that is making a disciple. You see when the Word of God lands on a heart that receives it in faith that person needs to be discipled. Who is going to do that? You the seed scatter.
So lets just talk about some practical ways we can make disciples of others.
Practical Ways I Can Disciple Others
1. Seek someone who is receptive to learning. Don’t waste your time with Pharisees. Jesus warned against throwing your pearls to the swine Matt 7:6 Find people who are receptive to learning and pour yourself into them. Be patient, God will bring people to you.
2. Love and affirm them. Jesus loved people and they knew it. As a result they were willing to come to Him and listen to Him. The prostitutes and tax collectors felt welcome in Jesus presence. He hated their sin, but still loved them.
3. Share with them what God has done for you. Share your testimony.
4. Share meaningful Scriptures that relate to their situation or need. Point people to the word.
5. Tell what God has been saying to you lately. What God tells you is meant to be shared.
6. Be a true friend by listening to them. Don’t be the only one who talks. Relationships are built on two way communication.
2 Timothy 2:2 NKJV
And the things that you have heard from me among many witnesses, commit these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.
Discipleship is a cycle. It is built on the relationship of Jesus, who is at the center of all the teaching and discussions.
Matthew 28:20 NKJV
teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.
We are to share our faith and tell nonbelievers about the wonderful changes Jesus Christ has made in our lives. No matter what our maturity level in the Christian life, we have something to offer. Too often, we believe the lie from Satan that we don't really know enough or haven't been a Christian long enough to make a difference. Not true! Some of the most enthusiastic representatives of the Christian life are new believers who have just discovered the awesome love of God. They may not know a lot of Bible verses or the "accepted" way of saying things, but they have experienced the love of the living God, and that is exactly what we are to share.
So remember, we share the message of Jesus by the words He shared, and by the walking together in fellowship with Christ. You are not on this journey alone. Find someone, pray for that someone, seek to be a seed planter, share your story with someone else, be a friend, walk with them, walk in the direction of Christ. Invest the love, grace and kindness that Christ has shown and given to you. Give it to others. You are Christ’s hands and feet, you are the body of Christ.
You are on a journey. It’s a journey you are not meant to travel alone. We are called to share our story, share our faith and share the life change we have through Christ. We have been given a mission to Go and Make disciples and raise up people to walk this road with us. You are on a journey…who’s coming with you?
