Greater than Moses
Greater than Moses
Next to Abraham, Moses was undoubtedly the man most greatly revered by the Jewish people.
It was important that the writer convince his readers that Jesus Christ is greater than Moses, for the entire system of Jewish religion came through Moses.
In this section, we learn that Jesus Christ is superior to Moses.
That Jesus is greater in Moses in term of ministry is clear.
17 For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.
More next week.
Today we want to look at the person of Moses vs the Person of Jesus.
Now we are not knocking Moses, or putting Him down.
Moses was a faithful servant.
1 Wherefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our profession, Christ Jesus;
2 Who was faithful to him that appointed him, as also Moses was faithful in all his house.
Moses served God all his life. He is an example of humility and godliness. So this is not an annti-moses sermon.
This is a look at the person of Moses compared to the Person of Jesus.
Like I said Moses was a faithful servant, but he was not a sinless saviour.
Moses, sinned like anyone else.
The sin of unbelief -
12 And the Lord spake unto Moses and Aaron, Because ye believed me not, to sanctify me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore ye shall not bring this congregation into the land which I have given them.
The sin of anger -
8 Take the rod, and gather thou the assembly together, thou, and Aaron thy brother, and speak ye unto the rock before their eyes; and it shall give forth his water, and thou shalt bring forth to them water out of the rock: so thou shalt give the congregation and their beasts drink.
9 And Moses took the rod from before the Lord, as he commanded him.
10 And Moses and Aaron gathered the congregation together before the rock, and he said unto them, Hear now, ye rebels; must we fetch you water out of this rock?
11 And Moses lifted up his hand, and with his rod he smote the rock twice: and the water came out abundantly, and the congregation drank, and their beasts also.
And of course, the sin of murder -
11 And it came to pass in those days, when Moses was grown, that he went out unto his brethren, and looked on their burdens: and he spied an Egyptian smiting an Hebrew, one of his brethren.
12 And he looked this way and that way, and when he saw that there was no man, he slew the Egyptian, and hid him in the sand.
13 And when he went out the second day, behold, two men of the Hebrews strove together: and he said to him that did the wrong, Wherefore smitest thou thy fellow?
14 And he said, Who made thee a prince and a judge over us? intendest thou to kill me, as thou killedst the Egyptian? And Moses feared, and said, Surely this thing is known.
15 Now when Pharaoh heard this thing, he sought to slay Moses. But Moses fled from the face of Pharaoh, and dwelt in the land of Midian: and he sat down by a well.
What about Jesus? What are His sins?
21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.
Jesus is without sin, perfect, holy and blameless.
To get into next weeks sermon just a little bit:
5 And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin.
Moses was a type of Christ, a foreshadowing, in that as Moses led the people out of Egypt, so Jesus would lead people out of sin.
But all that Moses could not do, Jesus did.
1: Moses could not bring lasting satisfaction.
1: Moses could not bring lasting satisfaction.
Moses struck the rock and water came out, but soon fate that the people thirsted again.
12 Is not this the word that we did tell thee in Egypt, saying, Let us alone, that we may serve the Egyptians? For it had been better for us to serve the Egyptians, than that we should die in the wilderness.
However, Jesus is the living water.
14 But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.
What is this living water than Jesus gives that moses could never give?
37 In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink.
38 He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.
39 (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)
It is the Holy Spirit.
Moses experienced the power of the Holy Spiit, but Jesus is the giver of the Holy Spirit.
25 And the Lord came down in a cloud, and spake unto him, and took of the spirit that was upon him, and gave it unto the seventy elders: and it came to pass, that, when the spirit rested upon them, they prophesied, and did not cease.
Compare this to:
11 I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire:
2: Moses and Manna
2: Moses and Manna
31 Our fathers did eat manna in the desert; as it is written, He gave them bread from heaven to eat.
32 Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Moses gave you not that bread from heaven; but my Father giveth you the true bread from heaven.
33 For the bread of God is he which cometh down from heaven, and giveth life unto the world.
34 Then said they unto him, Lord, evermore give us this bread.
35 And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.
The Jews believed that the Messiah would duplicate the miracle of manna from Heaven which they believe was done at the hand of Moses.
It was God, not Moses, who gave the manna; so they must take their eyes off Moses and focus them on God.
Also, God gave the manna in the past, but the Father is now giving the true bread in the person of Jesus Christ.
The past event is finished, but the present spiritual experience goes on!
Then Jesus clearly identified what the bread is:
He is the true Living Bread that came down from heaven.
But He came, not only for Israel but for the whole world.
And He came, not just to sustain life, but to give life! - Manna can sustain, but Jesus can give!!!
3: The Glory of God.
3: The Glory of God.
One day Moses asked God something very intresting.
18 And he said, I beseech thee, shew me thy glory.
19 And he said, I will make all my goodness pass before thee, and I will proclaim the name of the Lord before thee; and will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will shew mercy on whom I will shew mercy.
God granted Moses this request, but it had conditions.
20 And he said, Thou canst not see my face: for there shall no man see me, and live.
21 And the Lord said, Behold, there is a place by me, and thou shalt stand upon a rock:
22 And it shall come to pass, while my glory passeth by, that I will put thee in a clift of the rock, and will cover thee with my hand while I pass by:
23 And I will take away mine hand, and thou shalt see my back parts: but my face shall not be seen.
Moses could not look fully into the fully face of God, he could only see the back parts.
The glory was simply to much.
But what about Jesus?
18 No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.
Moses was sent by God.
Jesus is God.
There is so much more to this, but that will wait till next week.
Today, let us just give thanks that we don’t follow a man, we follow God.
