How adversity Advances The Gospel
JOY: Turning Circumstances Into Catalysts Not Constraints
His words demand that we take a long and hard look at ourselves. What does the gospel mean to us? Does it mean enough that we are willing to suffer hardship in order for it to prosper? Or do we put our own comfort and ease above the gospel?
His words demand that we take a long and hard look at ourselves. What does the gospel mean to us? Does it mean enough that we are willing to suffer hardship in order for it to prosper? Or do we put our own comfort and ease above the gospel?
As we look at Paul’s rejoicing over his imprisonment, we see him giving emphasis to two major themes: the good that he could see and the good that he expected to see.
Paul’s example teaches us to view every situation in which we find ourselves as an opportunity for spreading the gospel.
No Christian can instil faith in other hearts—that is the work of God. But wherever a believer goes, he should leave a favourable impression of his Christianity with those with whom he or she has associated.
12 And I want you to know, my dear brothers and sisters, that everything that has happened to me here has helped to spread the Good News.
13 For everyone here, including the whole palace guard, knows that I am in chains because of Christ.
14 And because of my imprisonment, most of the believers here have gained confidence and boldly speak God’s message without fear.
20 For I fully expect and hope that I will never be ashamed, but that I will continue to be bold for Christ, as I have been in the past. And I trust that my life will bring honor to Christ, whether I live or die.
21 For to me, living means living for Christ, and dying is even better.
22 But if I live, I can do more fruitful work for Christ. So I really don’t know which is better.
23 I’m torn between two desires: I long to go and be with Christ, which would be far better for me.
Knowing this, I am convinced that I will remain alive so I can continue to help all of you grow and experience the joy of your faith.
10 Create in me a clean heart, O God.
Renew a loyal spirit within me.
11 Do not banish me from your presence,
and don’t take your Holy Spirit from me.
12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation,
and make me willing to obey you.
13 Then I will teach your ways to rebels,
and they will return to you.
