Good evening boys and girls, how are you all this evening?
Can anyone remember what Tammy’s story was, not last week but the week before?
Yes, Jesus healed the man with unclean demons inside of him.
Well at the end of that story, Jesus got onto a boat and he sailed to the other side of the water and he got off the boat and this is where our story starts today, but before that I want to ask you a question.
Can anyone tell me what faith is?
oyg8ytbn o
Faith is complete trust or confidence in someone or something.
Now, Joel and I are very good friends, and I trust him completely. I have faith in him that he will be a good friend to me.
But
I think we should see if Joel has complete faith in me don’t you think?
So let’s cheer on Joel and see if he will come up to the front and we’ll see if he trusts me.
You see Joel had faith that I would catch him even though it seemed very scary to be dropping.
In our story today, we see 2 people who had amazing faith.
Not faith in me, or even Peter…but in Jesus.
So…after Jesus got off the boat, a crowd gathered around him and there was a man who was a very important man and his name was Jairus
Slide
Now we are told that this man was one of the rulers of the synagogue.
Can anyone tell me what a synagogue is?
It was a meeting place for Jewish people to teach and learn about religious things.
And so Jairus was a ruler in one of these and so he would have known the OT part of the bible very very well.
We are learning a memory verse at CB Kids and that is really really hard but Jairus probably knew massive passages of the bible off by heart.
And these people tended not to like Jesus very much because in the OT, it talks about a saviour who would come and people were saying that Jesus was that man.
But men like Jairus thought he was lying and so they didn’t like him at all.
So because of this, what we hear next is amazing.
When Jairus saw Jesus he fell at Jesus’ feet and asked him to do something.
Slide
You see Jairus’s daughter was very very sick and he thought that she was going to die, and he had heard that Jesus was able to heal people, so Jairus begged Jesus to come with him and put his hands on his daughter so he could heal her.
Do you think that Jesus went with him?
Slide
Yes he did, Jesus was going to show his power to heal the girl.
So Jesus and Jairus started to head towards Jairus’s house and they was a massive crowd following them.
But on the way, we are told that there was a very sick lady and she had been very sick for 12 whole years…doesn’t that sound awful?
Slide
She had been to so many doctors, she spent so much money trying to get better but nothing work for her.
But this lady had an idea, she had heard as well that Jesus could heal people and so she said,
Mark 5:28 ESV
For she said, “If I touch even his garments, I will be made well.”
Mark 5:
Notice she says, “I will be made well”
She doesn’t think “Oh maybe he will heal me if I touch his clothes”
She knows that she will be healed…she has complete faith in Jesus.
So the lady pushed her way through the crowds and manages to touch Jesus’s clothes and guess what happens.
Slide
She was immediately healed, isn’t that amazing?
But when she was healed, Jesus felt his healing power working and he asked who touched me?
He looked around and saw the lady who was healed and she had fallen down because she was scared that she wasn’t allowed to touch Jesus.
Slide
She told Jesus that it was her who touched him and he replied to her,
Mark 5:34 ESV
And he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace, and be healed of your disease.”
Jesus knew that the lady had complete faith in him so he healed her and sent her away in peace.
Isn’t this amazing? This is also another way we can see that Jesus isn’t just a normal person, because a normal person can’t just heal people if they touch their clothes can they?
No, Jesus could do this because he is the Son of God.
Now this story was amazing, but did Jesus forget about Jairus’s daughter?
No he didn’t.
While Jesus was speaking to the lady, a man came from Jairus’s house and said that his daughter was dead…isn’t this awful.
Slide
The man said, we don’t need to bother Jesus anymore, let’s leave him alone.
But Jesus heard him say this and said,
Mark 5:36 ESV
But overhearing what they said, Jesus said to the ruler of the synagogue, “Do not fear, only believe.”
Mark 5:
What does this mean?
Jesus is saying to the man, you just need to have faith in me and I will heal your daughter. You need to have faith that I have the power to heal.
So they go to Jairus’s house and there was a big crowd there and they were crying and wailing because they were so sad that the daughter died.
Slide
But Jesus says something very surprising, he says why are you all making so much noise and crying so much…she isn’t dead, she is only sleeping.
This doesn’t make sense does it? The man said the she was dead but Jesus knows better.
Jesus went up to the girls room with a few of His disciples, and he took the girl’s hand and said,
Slide
“Little girl, I say to you, arise.”
And immediately the daughter got up from her bed and started walking around.
Slide
WOW
Isn’t it amazing how Jesus had the power to heal people, and even raise them from the dead.
Who can tell me why he can do this?
Son of God.
Now Jesus healed these 2 people because of the faith of the lady and the faith of Jairus.
And in the book of John which is in the bible, it says in chapter 3:16
John 3:16 ESV
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
We are told that if WE believe in Jesus, if we have complete faith in him, we can have eternal life.
Now why do we need to have faith in Jesus?
Well in the world there is something called sin, we have learned about it before.
Can anyone tell me what sin is?
It is the bad things we do that disappoint God.
Now because of this sin, we cannot have a relationship with God and that just isn’t here on earth but this means forever.
You see because of this sin we don’t go to heaven and spend eternity with God, but we go to a place called hell which means we are eternally separated from God.
But we are told in the bible if we have faith in Jesus…if we have faith that he lived a perfect life here on earth and he died on the cross and rose again.
And because he did this our sins can be forgiven.
If we have faith in Jesus that he did this, we can have a relationship with God, we can live a life following what the bible teaches…and we will be saved so that we don’t go to hell but we will spend eternity with God in heaven.
All of the leaders here faith in Jesus and because of this their sins have been forgiven and they will all tell you that this is the most amazing thing that has ever happened to them.
To become a Christian, to show you have faith in Jesus, you need to pray to him to say sorry for all the sins that you have done, you need to promise to try your very hardest to live how the bible teaches us to, and you need to have faith that Jesus died on the cross for your sins.
And if you do this, you will be given the gift of salvation, of being saved, and God promises that you go to heaven with Him and be there forever.
Let’s pray
