Worship God
But many things require a second category?
Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus, by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain, that is, through his flesh, and since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful. And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.
And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.
Who is the “we” in Hebrews 10:24?
Hebrews 10:19-
“But despite its unquestioned value, little is known with certainty about its occasion, background, and authorship. Ignorance in these matters, however, does not seriously affect the understanding of the epistle’s message. That remains timeless and relevant whatever the circumstances out of which it arose.” (BKC)
So this is a general audience, and a truth meant to be applied to every believer.
And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ,
The Teaching of the Passage:
The Greek New Testament: SBL Edition Chapter 4
εἰς ἔργον διακονίας
The Greek New Testament: SBL Edition Chapter 4
εἰς ἔργον διακονίας
εἰς- Purpose clause by most commentaries, some with reference to.
Either way - εἰς points the equipping of the saints is to the work of the ministry.
The saints are to do the work of the ministry.
διακονίας - service, administrative function.
We are called to meet together - [not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some]
Consider one another (Main verb, Subjunctive) - Idea of looking outside ourselves and to others.
[καὶ κατανοῶμεν ἀλλήλους, Let us consider one another]
KJV: And let us consider one another
Stir up love. [provocation of love] - are you an instrument to provoke people to love?
Stir up love.
Stir up good works. - How are you an instrument to helping others live Gospel-minded, holy lives, that are focused on serving others? (Good works)
Stir up good works.
Encourage one another. (παρακαλέω)
Can mean to call someone alongside you.
Encourage one another. (παρακαλέω)
Here the focus is encouragement, but encouragement often is about coming alongside those who are hurting, struggling.
Meeting for this purpose.
Meeting for this purpose.
What are some practical ways you could serve others?
Think of the last few months, and next few months.
Greet New Visitors. That is the obvious.
Deeper -
Have coffee or a meal with someone; especially a visitor or a church member you haven’t talked to in a while.
>especially in context where we ask one another how our Spiritual walk is going (Scripture, sin, prayer). …
2. Staying around and spending time with each other before or after the service.
> Relationships require time and investment, practicing this verse doesn’t happen over night.
> You have to build a relationship.
If we rush out to get our dinner on the table, and get those extra things done in between church.
> Then we all miss out on the the body life God intended for us.
Our body life has to be more then just hand shaking time; because we need more then that.
- and in the process you might be able to connect personally with a child or person that no one else can connect with.
3. Going out of your way to visit and encourage those who are hurting - like Joe.
4. Be apart of a ministry that isn’t your favorite ministry.
Life isn’t about what I like to do,
and neither is ministry.
We are called to consider one another
- which means someone has to clean up the tables,
- someone has to help paint.
- someone has to make the coffee.
- someone has to help watch and/or train the kids, when we get new families.
If you want to try to have new families with children
- then we have to have Children’s program that is more then they can sit with us.
- We ought to want to help the next generation to love Jesus.
- And may I say - when they do sit with us; treat them like they are apart of our church.
5.
- and in the process you might be able to connect personally with a child or person that no one else can connect with.
These are valuable for eternity -
If you want to try to have new families with children
- then we have to have Children’s program that is more then they can sit with us.
- And when they do sit with us; treat them like they are apart of our church.
5. Be apart of a ministry that I get nothing out of.
I realize, that many of you have been reading God’s word for longer then I have been alive - so some truths are going to sound like the 100th time.
But in those times, it is not just about whether I need it,
but whether others need.
How can I be an instrument to help others come to love, good works, and be encouraged?
Dave Ramsey - Maybe you don’t need the training. You already are in retirement, but could you have encouraged someone else.
a. Business Expertise.
b. Financial Expertise.
c. You experience is what our group lacks.
How could can you get involved for the benefit of everyone else.
Don’t just come because you get something out of it,
Don’t just come because God says so,
Come because you can help others grow in Christ,
We ought to be attending as much to disciple others as we are to disciple ourselves.
These are some ways that we can live out in our church.
I hope you have been praying through this verse over the last month.
And I hope you take seriously what Paul teaches.
And our church needs this kind of ministry.
Just because we are small doesn’t mean this happens automatically.
Knowing each others name doesn’t mean we are practicing this passage.
And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.
