What is the Priesthood?

Priest = God’s ordained mediators between Himself and Man.
Good Explanation of difference between High Priest, Priest and Levite

specific priestly activities belonged to three orders—high priest, priest, and Levite. Priests were male descendants of Aaron (Nm 3:10) and Levites were male members of the tribe of Levi. The chief functions of the priesthood were in the temple. They looked after the ceremonial vessels and performed the sacrifices. In doing their duties they dressed in special, symbolic vestments. They were also teachers, passing on the sacred traditions of the nation. This included such matters as medical information (Lv 13–15). The high priest was the spiritual head of Israel and he had special functions, for example, entering the Holy of Holies on the Day of Atonement (Lv 16). The Levites assisted the priests and served the congregation in the temple. They sang the psalms, kept the temple courts clean, helped to prepare certain sacrifices and offerings, and also had a teaching function.

***A quick word about
Disposal of Offerings
Changing to linen garments to remove the ashes from the alter
Changing into other closes to take the ashes outside the camp
Charge to keep the fire burning perpetually
A burnt offering was given in the morning and the evening and opened (maybe) and closed (definitely) the sacrifices for the day. It would have to be tended all evening to not go out overnight prior to the morning offering. The ash would then be removed before the next days sacrifice (I think).
Three Explanations for Perpetual Fire
Fire the started the first offering was fire that consumed the rest
Symbolized the uninterrupted worship of God
Represents the continued consecration of the people of God
Reminder of the constant need for atonement
Reason for change of clothes - in the sanctuary confines the priest must always be dressed appropriately, and there must be a distinction between the Holy and the common.

Why does seem similar to 1-5? Gordon Wenham answers...
“If, however, you were a priest, you would have been more interested in the ritual as such. It was the worshiper's duty to bring the animal on the right occasions, it was the priest's to sacrifice it according to the proper form. He had to know which parts of the animal had to be burned, which could be eaten and which could not. He was also interested in which parts of the sacrifice belonged to him, which had to be shared with his colleagues, and which were to be returned to the worshipper.” (May not be relevant)

Here are all the markers in those two chapters for the instructions for the priests
Exodus 29:43–46 NASB95
43 “I will meet there with the sons of Israel, and it shall be consecrated by My glory. 44 “I will consecrate the tent of meeting and the altar; I will also consecrate Aaron and his sons to minister as priests to Me. 45 “I will dwell among the sons of Israel and will be their God. 46 “They shall know that I am the Lord their God who brought them out of the land of Egypt, that I might dwell among them; I am the Lord their God.
Exodus 29:
Leviticus 6:9 NASB95
9 “Command Aaron and his sons, saying, ‘This is the law for the burnt offering: the burnt offering itself shall remain on the hearth on the altar all night until the morning, and the fire on the altar is to be kept burning on it.
Lev.6:8
Leviticus 6:14 NASB95
14 ‘Now this is the law of the grain offering: the sons of Aaron shall present it before the Lord in front of the altar.
Leviticus 6:20 NASB95
20 “This is the offering which Aaron and his sons are to present to the Lord on the day when he is anointed; the tenth of an ephah of fine flour as a regular grain offering, half of it in the morning and half of it in the evening.
Leviticus 6:25 NASB95
25 “Speak to Aaron and to his sons, saying, ‘This is the law of the sin offering: in the place where the burnt offering is slain the sin offering shall be slain before the Lord; it is most holy.
Leviticus 7:1 NASB95
1 ‘Now this is the law of the guilt offering; it is most holy.
Leviticus 7:11 NASB95
11 ‘Now this is the law of the sacrifice of peace offerings which shall be presented to the Lord.
Summation Verse at the end of Chapter 7
Leviticus 7:11
Leviticus 7:37–38 NASB95
37 This is the law of the burnt offering, the grain offering and the sin offering and the guilt offering and the ordination offering and the sacrifice of peace offerings, 38 which the Lord commanded Moses at Mount Sinai in the day that He commanded the sons of Israel to present their offerings to the Lord in the wilderness of Sinai.
Beginning of Chapter 8 Positions us for Ceremony of Ordaining the Priests
Leviticus 7:37
Leviticus 8:1–5 NASB95
1 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 2 “Take Aaron and his sons with him, and the garments and the anointing oil and the bull of the sin offering, and the two rams and the basket of unleavened bread, 3 and assemble all the congregation at the doorway of the tent of meeting.” 4 So Moses did just as the Lord commanded him. When the congregation was assembled at the doorway of the tent of meeting, 5 Moses said to the congregation, “This is the thing which the Lord has commanded to do.”

Leviticus 8:6–10 NASB95
6 Then Moses had Aaron and his sons come near and washed them with water. 7 He put the tunic on him and girded him with the sash, and clothed him with the robe and put the ephod on him; and he girded him with the artistic band of the ephod, with which he tied it to him. 8 He then placed the breastpiece on him, and in the breastpiece he put the Urim and the Thummim. 9 He also placed the turban on his head, and on the turban, at its front, he placed the golden plate, the holy crown, just as the Lord had commanded Moses. 10 Moses then took the anointing oil and anointed the tabernacle and all that was in it, and consecrated them.

“Calvin commenting says, "Since God prefers obedience to all sacrifices, he was unwilling that anything should remain doubtful as to the external rites, which were not otherwise of great importance; that they might learn to observe. precisely, and with most exact care, whatever the Law commanded, and that they should not obtrude anything of themselves."25
Jesus said that God must be worshipped in spirit and in truth. And it has become commonplace to contrast spirit and form as if they were incompatible in worship. "The letter killeth but the Spirit giveth life" is a text that out of context () can be used to justify slapdash leading of services and other Christian activities. Spontaneity and lack of preparation is equated with spirituality. denies this: care and attention to detail are indispensable to the conduct of divine worship. God is more important, more distinguished, worthy of more respect than any man; therefore we should follow his injunctions to the letter, if we respect him.
A glance at the performing arts dispels the illusion that a great and spirited performance can be achieved without practice and attention to detail. Indeed great actors and musicians spend hours studying and rehearsing the works they are to perform, so that they can recapture the spirit of the author and convey it in their performance. Audiences expect performers to aim at perfection in the concert hall. Worship is also a performance, a performance in honor of almighty God. As no orchestra can give of its best without a competent conductor and meticulous rehearsal, so no congregation is likely to worship our holy God in a worthy manner without careful direction by a well-instructed minister.”

Here is the result
Leviticus 9:22–24 NASB95
22 Then Aaron lifted up his hands toward the people and blessed them, and he stepped down after making the sin offering and the burnt offering and the peace offerings. 23 Moses and Aaron went into the tent of meeting. When they came out and blessed the people, the glory of the Lord appeared to all the people. 24 Then fire came out from before the Lord and consumed the burnt offering and the portions of fat on the altar; and when all the people saw it, they shouted and fell on their faces.

Priesthood of the Believer Today

Jesus as a better High Priest
Hebrews 7:23–28 NASB95
23 The former priests, on the one hand, existed in greater numbers because they were prevented by death from continuing, 24 but Jesus, on the other hand, because He continues forever, holds His priesthood permanently. 25 Therefore He is able also to save forever those who draw near to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them. 26 For it was fitting for us to have such a high priest, holy, innocent, undefiled, separated from sinners and exalted above the heavens; 27 who does not need daily, like those high priests, to offer up sacrifices, first for His own sins and then for the sins of the people, because this He did once for all when He offered up Himself. 28 For the Law appoints men as high priests who are weak, but the word of the oath, which came after the Law, appoints a Son, made perfect forever.
It is as priests that He seeks to send us into the world. We must not be afraid of this vision. And see it not as a burden but a responsibility. Gods call to His children is to be as He was in the world.

Luke 6:40 NASB95
40 “A pupil is not above his teacher; but everyone, after he has been fully trained, will be like his teacher.
Luke 11:28 NASB95
28 But He said, “On the contrary, blessed are those who hear the word of God and observe it.”
Matthew 11:28–30 NASB95
28 “Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. 29 “Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 “For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”

“Shepherds fight for their sheep and to do so well they must be set apart for the task. Their ability to shepherd well and to be the mediators between God and man requires an obedience and understanding that relies on trust. What anchors that trust is the belief in who He says we are and who we represent. That we are hand-holders up the ladder that lead to Him. That we are guards that open the narrow way. That we are friends of His that sing of His praises and show in our countenance the marks of many happy years in His presence. Let us be a fuzzy picture of the redeemed to the world. An ordinary man made Holy by an extraordinary, grace giving and magnificent God. May we be washed, anointed, forgiven and dressed for all to see what He wants... for us to be but a reflection of Him.”
