Sermon text: Sermon Title – “The Highs and Lows of Life ”
Intro: On top of the mountain represents the high feeling of life.
One famous quote comes from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr speed in Memphis speaking for the primarily African American sanitarian workers on strike because of unfair union practices.
This speech dated April 3, 1968 and is remembered because of Dr. King saying toward the end:
Well, I don't know what will happen now.
We've got some difficult days ahead.
But it really doesn't matter with me now, because I've been to the mountaintop. And I don't mind.Like anybody, I would like to live a long life.
Longevity has its place.
But I'm not concerned about that now.
I just want to do God's will.
And He's allowed me to go up to the mountain.
And I've looked over.
And I've seen the Promised Land.
I may not get there with you.
But I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people, will get to the promised land!
And so I'm happy, tonight.
I'm not worried about anything.
I'm not fearing any man!
Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord!!
This is strongly remembered because Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr was assassinated the next day.
The power of the mountaintop in his message was to help them to know he can see the promise land in the midst of the current trials and tribulations.
We too can grasp this concept to day in seeing the Highs in life that prepares us to deal with the lows in life.
Lead into Text: Lukes Gospel gives a historical account of the Messiah Jesus Christ who is the Son of God.
This gospel account helps to reveal Jesus the Son of God as fully man and fully God who fulfills the Messiah prophecy is being expressed in this gospel.
Before our text of study today Jesus has performed miracles that identify him as the Messiah.
In this ninth chapter Jesus has given authority to his disciples to drive out demons, heal the sick and proclaim the kingdom.
The chapter also tells us around this time King Herod killed John the Baptist the relative of Jesus.
When the disciples came back to report to Jesus the impact they had in their work for the kingdom the moved to Bethsaida and a crowd followed them there.
Jesus fead about five thousand men.
Jesus after these events asked the twelve who do they say that I am?
Peter confesses that Jesus is God’s Messiah.
Therefore Jesus teaches them that the Son of Man must suffer anythings and the cost of being his disciple.
We pick up our text in Luke’s time line eight days later after Jesus gave them the revelation that he is the Messiah who is to die and rise three days.
He is the Messiah that will save them and they are to deny themselves and follow after Jesus to be his disciples.
