Good Morning, it is so good to be back with this morning, I was going stir crazy having to be shut up in the house last week after battling the flu but I want to thank you for your prayers it went all the way through our house and we are all doing much much better.
Turnwith me in your Bibles this morning to the book of wisdom, how many of you think we could use some more wisdom. I know I could, WISDOM IS APPLIED KNOWLEDGE say that with me, wisdom is applied knowledge.
Wisdom is not the same as knowledge, wisdom is higher than knowledge. Knowledge is you know something to be a fact, wisdom is you apply that. I know that I shouldn’t drive without a seatbelt, so if I do I might get a ticket I could get in a wreck and it seriously injure me.... Thats knowledge.
The wisdom is put your seatbelt on. God wants to give us wisdom and so were looking at the book of proverbs. Obviously I can’t preach through the book of proverbs because if I tried none of us would be alive when we finished.
Its a long book, but I just wan to take a few and over the next few weeks look at some wisdom from God. I’ve never preached a series through it.
Now today were talking about a very serious topic and that is the discipline of the Lord. As a father I find myself in situations where I need to discipline my son. So when those times come I get down on his level which is the way God deals with us, and God talks to us and God lovingly disciplines us.
Let me just say this to you, if you are a child of God, God wants you to be in the center of His will. Let’s just talk about the will of God. This is where God wants you to be, the Bible says in that God’s will is good perfect and acceptable.
God has a perfect plan for your life. But sin can interrupt that plan, sin can interrupt God’s plan for your life. Sin and disobedience is not the will of God for you. Some people say everything that happens is the will of God I beg to differ sin is not the will of God.
Now God may soverignly work even through sin taking things meant for evil and turn them around for good but sin is not Gods will. Don’t blame your sin on God, when you sin you leave the will of God and guess where you go?
The woodshed of God- How many of you know what the woodshed of God is? It’s the place where you go to get a spanking… this is where you get disciplined. Now let me ask you a question, when your parents disciplined you was it because they didnt love you or because they did love you?
They loved you
If they didn’t love you they would just let you go run crazy and do whatever you wanted to do and just let you run free out there and running wild. But God loves you too much to let you do whatever you want.
When you and I sin I dont care who you are you will go to the woodshed of God, because He loves you. But let me tell you the tragedy, when your in the woodshed you can either go back to the will of God, or you can continue on in your sin. God is a patient God but there comes a time and only God knows where that line is, and only He knows where it is. If you keep crossing that line if you keep on living in your sin, if you will not respond to the woodshed and you keep on sinning.
you will go to a third level which is called the wrath of God and look at me you dont wanna be there, thats when God really comes down with the hammer. So the will of God, the woodshed of God, the wrath of God.
I want to be in the will of God, and when God disciplines me when I get sent to the woodshed I’m not just gonna keep on sinning I am going to repent and go back to the will of God. I dont want the wrath of God on me and my family I want the will of God. Which is good acceptable and perfect.
Now let’s look at
Proverbs 3:11–12 ESV
My son, do not despise the Lord’s discipline or be weary of his reproof, for the Lord reproves him whom he loves, as a father the son in whom he delights.
Notice first of all that:

The Discipline of the Lord is Real

It is real
Proverbs 3:11 ESV
My son, do not despise the Lord’s discipline or be weary of his reproof,
Proverbs 3:12 ESV
for the Lord reproves him whom he loves, as a father the son in whom he delights.
King Solomon was writing these words talking to the people of Israel explaining the reality of the discipline of the Lord. He said dont reject it, the discipline of the Lord is real, dont loathe it dont hate, dont disdain it, dont despise it, dont be angry when the Lord rebukes you, when He reproves you, when He cautions you.
When He warns you or reprimands you bc of your sin. Dont get mad at God.
Solomon was telling them the Lord had been a good father to Israel, because of my Father David we have peace all around all the other nations bow down to us.... We have plenty to eat, we have money in the back, we have a roof over our head, clothes on or back and peace in our land.
God has blessed us Solomon was saying to his countrymen, beyond other nations. He has every right if we sin, to discipline us. Even as an Earthly Father has the right to discipline an disobedient child, Solomon said it plainly.
the discipline of the Lord is real. You know Solomon knew about the discipline of the Lord because of how God had treated his own mother and father. You see his mother had been married before, and she had been married to a man named Uriah the Hittite, He was one of Davids best warriors.
But the bible says in
do yuo remember?
David was not where he was supposed to be the army had gone out to fight but he stayed back in the spring of the year. He went over by the window, he was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Look at me when your in the wrong place at the wrong time with the wrong people your going to do the wrong thing.
He wasnt with the army, he wasnt where He was supposed to be. So now he’s looking where he should never had been looking. He would have never seen this on the battle field.
But in that day, women and men would go out and bathe on the rooftop, because nobody could see you on the rooftop except from one place, a kings palace. We dont have to worry about king David the kings safe right?
The King looked out and he saw Bathsheba and the Bible says she was beautiful and he called for she came and they slept together she conceived and David tried to cover his sin up. Rather than confess he tried to cover his sin up, and David brought Uriah off the battlefield had him over to eat, got him drunk sent him home to his wife, knowing he would sleep with her and they would think the baby was theirs instead of Davids.
But Uriah was such an honorable man he said I can’t go home and be with my wife while my men are out in battle. He was a very honorable man. David did it again, and so David put a note in his hand, to give to the commander of the army when he got back out on the battle field, He said you give this to Joab when you get back out there.
He was carrying his own death notice in his hand, the note said put uriah in the front of the battle where the feircest war is going on so he will be killed. He had to be an honorable man he didnt even read the note on his way back.
He handed the note to his commander and he went to close and he got killed. David thought he had covered his sin, but God had another plan. god didnt like what happened, God sent to him a prophet named Nathan, Nathan came and said King I wanna tell you a story of something that has happened in your kingdom.
There was a man who was very rich, and there was another man, who had only one little lamb. This rich man had come into town and rather than kill one of his many sheep, he went and took the only little lamb the poor man had.
David got furious, that man deserves to die, and Nathan pointed his finger right in the kings face and said your the man....
You had everything you have wives you have all these blessings and all this power Uriah had one little lamb and you took her, and you had a child with her God is going to pour out his discipline on you. When David realized what was happening he hit the deck he repented and Nathan said your sins are forgiven, but God is still going to discipline you.
It doesnt matter who you are or where you are positioned and you sin God is going to discipline you. The quicker you repent the better, to repent not only means to admit it, but to quit it. dont just admit it, stop doing it.
Ask God to forgive you and humbly repent and dont return to it.
God spoke to the people of Israel under Moses leadership when they were wandering in the wilderness.
Deuteronomy 4:36 ESV
Out of heaven he let you hear his voice, that he might discipline you. And on earth he let you see his great fire, and you heard his words out of the midst of the fire.
Deuteronomy 4:36
Its not a matter of if God will discipline you its only a matter of when and how He will.
Sometimes God will reprove you with timeout, but sometimes God will give you a spanking you will feel like its lights out. Can anybody in this room attest to the fact that God will discipline you if you sin?
God disciplined Moses he told him to speak to the rock the second time but he hit it, and God disciplined Moses. God disciplined Moses sister miriam, She said were just as holy as you are and God speaks through us just like he speaks through you Moses.
god disciplined her with a week long case of leprosy. God disclined king Saul when he sacrificed and it was only Samuel the judge who was supposed to sacrifice. God disciplined Saul, and he disciplined Peter when he denied the Lord 3 times.
He confonted him 3 times and disciplined, it doesnt matter if your Moses or king David or the apostle Peter. It doesnt matter who you are, if you sin you better repent real quick because the Lords discipline is real.

The Lord’s Discipline Should be Received

You say man I dont wanna receive that. i dont like that part, oh its a good thing.
Proverbs
Proverbs 3:11 NASB95
My son, do not reject the discipline of the Lord Or loathe His reproof,
Do you remember when your parents told you that discipline was a good thing?
Dont reject it, receive it! Don’t loathe His reproof becuase there are some thngs youll never learn without it.
It is a spiritual safeguard, it will help you in the future to not make the same mistake twice. God was saying I will reward you when you obey my commandments but I will discipline you when you disobey them.
This was vital for the children of God to stay in line with the commands of God. Even though it was painful the discipline of the Lord toward His erring children was a blessing.
(Amy and I)
Proverbs 13:24 ESV
Whoever spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him is diligent to discipline him.
Someone might say I just love my children too much to spank them. Listen the scriptures say here that if you do not spank them at all you hate them.
(My mom)
Those who love their children care enough to discipline them.
Proverbs 22:15 HCSB
Foolishness is tangled up in the heart of a youth; the rod of discipline will drive it away from him.
sinful nature we all have ti dont we?
Even little babies have a sinful nature, WE ALL HAVE THAT SINFUL NATURE WITHIN US.
PRONE TO WANDER LORD I FEEL IT PRONE TO LEAVE THE GOD I LOVE.
Proverbs 23:13 HCSB
Don’t withhold discipline from a youth; if you beat him with a rod, he will not die.
Proverbs
(Tony Evans)
“Children have a sin nature, they were born with Hell inside of them and we gotta beat the hell out of them”
The Bible says
Job 5:17–18 HCSB
See how happy the man is God corrects; so do not reject the discipline of the Almighty. For He crushes but also binds up; He strikes, but His hands also heal.
“It is doubtful whether God can bless any man greatly, until He has wounded him deeply.” AW TOZER
Daddys hands were soft and kind when I was crying, Daddys hands were hard as steel when I done wrong, Daddys hands werent always gentle but I grew to understand that there was always love in Daddys hands.
When you despise the discipline of the Lord your actually hating yourself.
Proverbs 15:32 ESV
Whoever ignores instruction despises himself, but he who listens to reproof gains intelligence.
Look at me YOU DONT KNOW EVERYTHING GOD DOES WHEN GOD TELLS YOU DONT DO THIS HE IS SAYING DONT HURT YOURSELF, BUT WHEN GOD SAYS DO THIS HE IS SAYING HELP YOURSELF.
God knows what Hes doing.
Dont loathe the Lord reproof
The Lords discipline is real, and it should be received but theres one more thing I wanna show you.

The Lords Discipline Has Reasons

Proverbs 3:11–12 ESV
My son, do not despise the Lord’s discipline or be weary of his reproof, for the Lord reproves him whom he loves, as a father the son in whom he delights.
Proverbs 3:
God is intentional God knows the furture and the past and the present. God knows the plans He has for you plans for welfare and not calamity to give you a future and a hope.
He is taking eveything and conforming you into the image of His son and he is working everything together for good.
3 reasons for God’s discipline:
Confirms His love
Proverbs 3:12 HCSB
for the Lord disciplines the one He loves, just as a father, the son he delights in.
IF IT HE DIDNT DO IT IT WOULD SHOW HE DIDNT CARE!!
HE WOULD JUST BE SAYING YOU JUST GO ON AND KEEP ON SINNING, YOU GO ON AND RUIN YOUR LIFE I DONT CARE
IF GOD DIDNT LOVE HE WOULDNT CORRECT YOU HE WOULDNT EVENT TAKE THE TIME, BUT HE LOVE YOU TOO MUCH TO LET YOU SELF DESTRUCT IN YOUR SIN ARENT YOU GLAD FOR THAT?
Hebrews 12:5 ESV
And have you forgotten the exhortation that addresses you as sons? “My son, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord, nor be weary when reproved by him.
Hebrews 12:6 HCSB
for the Lord disciplines the one He loves and punishes every son He receives.
Hebrews 12:7 HCSB
Endure suffering as discipline: God is dealing with you as sons. For what son is there that a father does not discipline?
Hebrews 12:8 NASB95
But if you are without discipline, of which all have become partakers, then you are illegitimate children and not sons.
I thank God that He keeps me on a short leash, amen?
Its proof he loves me and that I am His son!
The moment I sin, you dont have to tell me the HOLY GHOST IS SHOUTING IN MY SOUL, THAT WAS WRONG!
Revelation 3:19 HCSB
As many as I love, I rebuke and discipline. So be committed and repent.
Who the Lord loves HE reproves.
Theres a cleansing nature to discipline
Hebrews 12:9 HCSB
Furthermore, we had natural fathers discipline us, and we respected them. Shouldn’t we submit even more to the Father of spirits and live?
Hebrews 12:10 HCSB
For they disciplined us for a short time based on what seemed good to them, but He does it for our benefit, so that we can share His holiness.
Hebrews 12:11 HCSB
No discipline seems enjoyable at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it yields the fruit of peace and righteousness to those who have been trained by it.
THAT WE MIGHT SHARE HIS HOLINESS
GOD IS A GOD WHO LOVES AND DISCIPLINES US FOR GOOD
God’s discipline cleanses us from sin.
3. It communicates truth
WHEN GOD DISCIPLINES YOU HE COMMUNICATES, NOT WITH WORDS BUT WITH DISCIPLINE.
Proverbs 12:1 ESV
Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge, but he who hates reproof is stupid.
Proverbs 15:32 ESV
Whoever ignores instruction despises himself, but he who listens to reproof gains intelligence.
Ephesians 6:4 ESV
Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.
What is the root word of discipline?
DISCIPLE!
(THE WRATH OF GOD)
(THE APOSTLE PAUL)
2 Corinthians
2 Corinthians 12:7–9 ESV
So to keep me from becoming conceited because of the surpassing greatness of the revelations, a thorn was given me in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to harass me, to keep me from becoming conceited. Three times I pleaded with the Lord about this, that it should leave me. But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.
