Meditate on these things!

As we continue our series on things to dwell on. We now move on to looking, considering, dwelling on the importance, character and the blessings of the Holy Spirit.
We have considered the Bible
We have pondered on God
We have discussed why Jesus is My King
And we start with our focal passage for this series (Php4:8-9)
Philippians 4:8–9 NASB95
8 Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things. 9 The things you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.
May we be reminded on what it means to meditate.
Meditate (verb) think deeply or focus one's mind for a period of time, in silence or with the aid of chanting, for religious or spiritual purposes or as a method of relaxation.think deeply or carefully about (something).
Philippians 4:8–9 NLT
8 And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise. 9 Keep putting into practice all you learned and received from me—everything you heard from me and saw me doing. Then the God of peace will be with you.
We are focusing on the Importance and character of the Holy Spirit today, the 3rd person of the Godhead.
Holy Spirit mentioned 88 times in the Old Testament
60 times in the Gospels
57 times in Acts
and 132 times in the Epistles
With all those mentions it must be important for us to dwell on, ponder, consider, meditate upon the things concerning the Holy Spirit.

Importance of the Holy Spirit

Something to consider, ponder on, dwell on as we go through this message, why is the Holy Spirit important, what does the Holy Spirit do, then and now.
____________________________
He was in the beginning and involved in creation (Gen1:2)
He knows the heart of God and man (1Cor2:10-12)
He is the means of inspiration for the Word (2Tim3:16-17)
He testifies for us (Rom8:16)
He helps us (Rom8:26-27)
He gives life (Gen2:7)
He is proof of forgiveness of sins (Act2:38) God’s earnest deposit (Eph1:13-15) and (2Cor1:22)
He is our heavenly guard (2Tim1:14)
______________________________
He was in the beginning and involved in creation (Gen1:2)
Genesis 1:2 NASB95
2 The earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was moving over the surface of the waters.
He was in the beginning and involved in creation (Gen1:2)
He knows the heart of God and man (1Cor2:10-12)
1 Corinthians 2:10–11 NASB95
10 For to us God revealed them through the Spirit; for the Spirit searches all things, even the depths of God. 11 For who among men knows the thoughts of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so the thoughts of God no one knows except the Spirit of God.
1 Corinthians 2:12 NASB95
12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may know the things freely given to us by God,
He was God’s tool for revelation and reminding to the Apostles so we may have the word we have today.
The Spirit knows the heart of man and the heart of God and helps us to know what has been freely given by he Lord.
He was in the beginning and involved in creation (Gen1:2)
He knows the heart of God and man (1Cor2:10-12)
He is the means of inspiration for the Word (2Tim3:16-17)
2 Timothy 3:16–17 ESV
16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.
He was in the beginning and involved in creation (Gen1:2)
He knows the heart of God and man (1Cor2:10-12)
He is the means of inspiration for the Word (2Tim3:16-17)
He testifies for us (Rom8:16)
He helps us (Rom8:26-27)
Romans 8:26–27 NASB95
26 In the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words; 27 and He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.
Helps in our weakness
Intercedes for us; knowing the heart of man and heart of God.
Searches our hearts
He helps us (Rom8:26-27)
He gives life (Gen2:7)
Genesis 2:7 NASB95
7 Then the Lord God formed man of dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.
He helps us (Rom8:26-27)
He gives life (Gen2:7)
He is proof of forgiveness of sins (Act2:38) God’s earnest deposit (Eph1:13-15) and finally (2Cor1:22)
Acts 2:38 NASB95
38 Peter said to them, “Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
and add to that
Ephesians 1:13–14 NASB95
13 In Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation—having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise, 14 who is given as a pledge of our inheritance, with a view to the redemption of God’s own possession, to the praise of His glory.
Ephesians 1:15 NASB95
15 For this reason I too, having heard of the faith in the Lord Jesus which exists among you and your love for all the saints,
oh I have to add one more
2 Corinthians 1:22 NASB95
22 who also sealed us and gave us the Spirit in our hearts as a pledge.
He helps us (Rom8:26-27)
He gives life (Gen2:7)
He is proof of forgiveness of sins (Act2:38) God’s earnest deposit (Eph1:13-16)
He is our heavenly guard (2Tim1:14)
2 Timothy 1:14 NASB95
14 Guard, through the Holy Spirit who dwells in us, the treasure which has been entrusted to you.
In his book “The office of the Holy Spirit” the author, Richardson says this:
“There is no subject more important in religious than that of the Holy Spirit. Unless this be properly understood, a large portion of the Bible, and especially the N.T. must remain unintelligible.”
He goes on later to say:
“On the other hand, a just view of Him will do more than a knowledge of any other particular topic to give harmony, clearness, and consistency to what may be learned to all other matters in the Word of God.”
So understanding the importance of the Holy Spirit is important, and to understand the works of the Holy Spirit, well, maybe we should take a few minutes on dwell on, ponder, consider the character of the Holy Spirit.

Dwell on: Character of the Holy Spirit

Character, ah let’s look at the character of the Holy Spirit. The definition being The mental and moral qualities distinctive to an individual.
Scripture rich we are and scripture rich we will be for we are simply Christians studying Gods Word together.
The character of the Holy Spirit possesses:
_____________________________________________
Personality
The Holy Spirit is a He (Jn14:16-17; Jn15:26-27)
The Holy Spirit guides, hears, warns, speaks and tells (Jn16:12-13; Act8:29; Act10:19-20; Act13:1-4)
The Holy Spirit intercedes (Rom8:26; 1Tim4:1)
Feelings
He can be grieved (Eph4:30)
He loves (Rom15:30)
Eternal
He is omniscient (1Cor2:10-11)
He is omnipresent (Ps139:7-10)
He is eternal (Heb9:14)
_____________________________________________________
Personality
The Holy Spirit is a He (Jn14:16-17; Jn15:26-27)
John 14:16–17 NASB95
16 “I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever; 17 that is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him, but you know Him because He abides with you and will be in you.
John 15:26–27 NASB95
26 “When the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, that is the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify about Me, 27 and you will testify also, because you have been with Me from the beginning.
Jesus says the Holy Spirit is a He, so the Holy Spirit is a person not a “thing” or an “it”.
The Holy Spirit is a He (Jn14:16-17; Jn15:26-27)
The Holy Spirit guides, hears, warns, speaks and tells (Jn16:12-13; Act8:29; Act10:19-20; Act13:1-4)
John 16:12–13 NASB95
12 “I have many more things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13 “But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come.
He spoke to Philip
Acts 8:29 NASB95
29 Then the Spirit said to Philip, “Go up and join this chariot.”
He spoke to Peter
Acts 10:19–20 NASB95
19 While Peter was reflecting on the vision, the Spirit said to him, “Behold, three men are looking for you. 20 “But get up, go downstairs and accompany them without misgivings, for I have sent them Myself.”
And the brethren in Antioch
Acts 13:1–2 NASB95
1 Now there were at Antioch, in the church that was there, prophets and teachers: Barnabas, and Simeon who was called Niger, and Lucius of Cyrene, and Manaen who had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch, and Saul. 2 While they were ministering to the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for Me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.”
Acts 13:3–4 NASB95
3 Then, when they had fasted and prayed and laid their hands on them, they sent them away. 4 So, being sent out by the Holy Spirit, they went down to Seleucia and from there they sailed to Cyprus.
The Holy Spirit is a He (Jn14:16-17; Jn15:26-27)
The Holy Spirit guides, hears, warns, speaks and tells (Jn16:12-13; Act8:29; Act10:19-20; Act13:1-4)
The Holy Spirit intercedes (Rom8:26; 1Tim4:1)
Romans 8:26 NASB95
26 In the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words;
I know I mentioned that one before, but it goes here very well too. and may I add
1 Timothy 4:1 NASB95
1 But the Spirit explicitly says that in later times some will fall away from the faith, paying attention to deceitful spirits and doctrines of demons,
So I think there is sufficient evidence in the scripture that the Holy Spirit that is a He can speak
Feelings
He can be grieved (Eph4:30)
Ephesians 4:30 NASB95
30 Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.
He can be grieved (Eph4:30)
He loves (Rom15:30)
Romans 15:30 NASB95
30 Now I urge you, brethren, by our Lord Jesus Christ and by the love of the Spirit, to strive together with me in your prayers to God for me,
Eternal
He is omniscient (1Cor2:10-11)
1 Corinthians 2:10–11 NASB95
10 For to us God revealed them through the Spirit; for the Spirit searches all things, even the depths of God. 11 For who among men knows the thoughts of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so the thoughts of God no one knows except the Spirit of God.
He is omniscient knowing the the mind of God
He is omniscient (1Cor2:10-11)
He is omnipresent (Ps139:7-10)
Psalm 139:7–8 NASB95
7 Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence? 8 If I ascend to heaven, You are there; If I make my bed in Sheol, behold, You are there.
Psalm 139:9–10 NASB95
9 If I take the wings of the dawn, If I dwell in the remotest part of the sea, 10 Even there Your hand will lead me, And Your right hand will lay hold of me.
Finally, regarding the character of the Holy Spirit, one more point.
He is omniscient (1Cor2:10-11)
He is omnipresent (Ps139:7-10)
He is eternal (Heb9:14)
Hebrews 9:14 NASB95
14 how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without blemish to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?
As previously seen with the Father and the Son both being great blessings to us as well as the Word making us blessed, happy, so are there blessings in and of the Holy Spirit .

Dwell on: Blessings of the Holy Spirit

Blessings, we have to take a few minutes and look at the blessings of the Holy Spirit, as we did with the Word of God, God and Jesus too.
____________________________________
Blessings promised to those who believe (Jn7:37-39)
Promised to those when baptized (Act2:38-39)
Blessings to those who are born again (Jn3:3-5)
Blessings of regeneration (Tit3:4-6)
Blessings of purification for those who obey the Word (1Pt1:22-23)
____________________________________
While the rain falls on the just and the unjust so do blessings, but there are some blessings reserved for certain people.
Blessings promised to those who believe (Jn7:37-39)
John 7:37–38 NASB95
37 Now on the last day, the great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink. 38 “He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, ‘From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.’ ”
John 7:39 NASB95
39 But this He spoke of the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were to receive; for the Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.
Jesus promises of the Spirit, promised to those who believe. Then Peter goes on to tell the when.
Blessings promised to those who believe (Jn7:37-39)
Promised to those when baptized (Act2:38-39)
Acts 2:38 NASB95
38 Peter said to them, “Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
Acts 2:39 NASB95
39 “For the promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off, as many as the Lord our God will call to Himself.”
To those who believed and when they are baptized.
Blessings promised to those who believe (Jn7:37-39)
Promised to those when baptized (Act2:38-39)
Blessings to those who are born again (Jn3:3-5)
John 3:3–4 NASB95
3 Jesus answered and said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.” 4 Nicodemus said to Him, “How can a man be born when he is old? He cannot enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born, can he?”
John 3:5 NASB95
5 Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
Blessings promised to those who believe (Jn7:37-39)
Promised to those when baptized (Act2:38-39)
Blessings to those who are born again (Jn3:3-5)
Blessings of regeneration (Tit3:4-6)
Titus 3:4–5 NASB95
4 But when the kindness of God our Savior and His love for mankind appeared, 5 He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but according to His mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit,
Titus 3:6 NASB95
6 whom He poured out upon us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior,
He does the washing, He does the regeneration, now if we can only get him to do our wash at home, right?
and then
Blessings promised to those who believe (Jn7:37-39)
Promised to those when baptized (Act2:38-39)
Blessings to those who are born again (Jn3:3-5)
Blessings of regeneration (Tit3:4-6)
Blessings of purification for those who obey the Word (1Pt1:22-23)
Not only does He wash and regenerate He purifies those who obey the Word
1 Peter 1:22–23 NASB95
22 Since you have in obedience to the truth purified your souls for a sincere love of the brethren, fervently love one another from the heart, 23 for you have been born again not of seed which is perishable but imperishable, that is, through the living and enduring word of God.

A few more things He does

Time is limited so below are the things and the scriptures; take the time and look them up, study them out yourself. Be simply a Christian studying God’s Word.

He indwells the people of God (1Cor6:19)
He empowers the people of God (Rom8:5-8)
He empowers the people so can do the will of God (Eph3:16-20)

(Invitation slide #1)
One more scripture but it is not on the screen.
Galatians 4:6 NASB95
6 Because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!”
The Holy Spirit with His importance, His character, His blessings cries out on our behalf to “Abba! Father!” and we get to join Him when we obey the Gospel, or walk in the truth of the Gospel or repent and return to the truth of the gospel
