Some Notes on the Theology of Blessing from the Old Testament for Today’s Church

Should Christians expect to be prosperous?

The New Covenant Clarifies and Supersedes the Old Covenant

Much of our misunderstanding on this matter stems from forgetting that the new covenant given by the blood of Christ supersedes the law of the old covenant given to the Hebrew people. The New Covenant is a “more perfect.”

The old covenant, which I will describe briefly below was given to us to teach us right from wrong and to show us how strongly God hates any sort of idolatry-whether that be worship of idols or the idolatry of our heart and mind in trusting “things” to save us rather than God.

God instituted a covenant, a binding agreement with Moses and the Hebrew people as they were about to cross into the land of Palestine.

The Ten Commandments are the stipulations of this covenant between God and the Hebrew people. “The Ten Commandments, are formally the general stipulation section of the Sinatic Covenant [given to Moses on Mount Sinai] document recorded in .
Exodus 20:1–3 NIV
And God spoke all these words: “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. “You shall have no other gods before me.
The so-called special stipulation section that follows the Decalogue consists of a number of statutes cast in the form of case (or casuistic) law, which together are designated “the Book of the Covenant.” It is clear that these statutes are not exhaustive in scope but are illustrative of the manner in which the principles of covenant stipulation are to be applied in individual cases. They also amplify and clarify the intent of those stipulations and even go beyond them, particularly in areas of cultic [religious] principle practice.”[1]

The book of Deuteronomy is itself, a covenant or treaty between God and his people the Hebrews.

The Wycliff Bible Commentary says, regarding Deuteronomy 4, that it “is remarkable in that it embodies, to some extent, all the features which constitute the documentary pattern of ancient suzerainty treaties. Thus, there are: (1) the identification of the author of the covenant as speaker (vv. 1, 2, 5, 10);
(2) references to past historical relations;
(3) the presentation of the central demand for pure devotion to the suzerain;
(4) appeal to the sanctions of blessing and curse;
(5) invocation of witnesses (v. 26);
(6) the requirement to transmit the knowledge of the covenant to subsequent generations (vv. 9, 10); and
(7) allusion to the dynastic issue (vv. 21, 22).
This mingling of the several leading aspects of covenant institution found here and elsewhere throughout the book is explained by the origin of the material in the free oratory of Moses’ farewell. Deuteronomy is not a document prepared in the state office with dispassionate adherence to legal form.”[2]

In you will see how seriously God took the breaking of laws, particularly the worship of foreign gods besides himself. When they worshipped Baal Peor 24,000 people died.

These are covenant stipulations against forbidding idolatry and asking people to follow the laws God gave to Moses.

THE HEBREW PEOPLE DID NOT KEEP THE COVENANT

If you read the prophets, you will see that in fact the people of God did not follow the laws. They turned to idolatry and they suffered dire consequences. See for one of many examples.

No one can keep the whole law, but we are made righteous by faith.

Paul wrote in Galatians that no one could, by themselves, follow the whole law. Thanks be to God that in Christ, we are made righteous not by keeping the law but by faith.

So the law was our guardian until Christ came that we might be justified by faith. Now that this faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian.

Do the Old Testament Laws of Blessings and Cursings apply today?

How do the Old Testament laws of blessings and cursings apply today? Those laws are good for all of God’s people and apply, in principal, to the church and to individual believers because we are the children of Abraham by faith
Romans 4:16 NIV
Therefore, the promise comes by faith, so that it may be by grace and may be guaranteed to all Abraham’s offspring—not only to those who are of the law but also to those who have the faith of Abraham. He is the father of us all.
(). And so, despite the fact that we are not Hebrew people, the covenant does apply to us as general principal. We are not the Hebrew people but we are the children of Abraham by being grafted in. So, in a sense, we are a sort of new nation of Israel and so we will not be blessed if we fall into idolatry, we should honor our father and mother etc.
Jesus clearly explains the relationship of the law to the people of God, to us today:

“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished.

Jesus says: “You have heard it said…But I tell you”

As an individual, we easily see that the Ten Commandments and the law to have no other God besides God are still binding but that Jesus goes further.

Jesus teaches not the letter of the law but the spirit.

He speaks not to the letter of the law but the heart of the law, the reason for the law. Jesus is God. We understand further that believers who are keeping the Ten Commandments and who worship only God and don’t stray to putting their faith in or giving their heart to other things will be blessed. We just read that those who give in secret will be rewarded. Deuteronomy was given to the Hebrew people but Jesus made it clear to us in how to live that out as his followers..
So see for example: (NIV) (When the first wave of Jewish exiles returned from Babylon to Jerusalem in 538 b.c., they began to rebuild the temple but soon gave up. Inspired by the prophetic ministries of Haggai and Zechariah, they finally completed the task in 516.[3])

Does it seem you have a hole in your purse?

I see in Haggai an illustration of how the law works. If you put other things ahead of your worship of God it will be like you have a hole in your purse from which your money is falling out. In practice, I have seen those who give with a joyful heart receive back much in this world and I assume in the world to come:

We see that , though a psalm and not a promise, is another general principal of truth.

I was young and now I am old, yet I have never seen the righteous forsaken or their children begging bread. They are always generous and lend freely; their children will be a blessing.

Notice how in the Old Testament they were to be generous and lend freely. The New Testament goes a bit further:

Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality.

Note the fact that believers do suffer affliction.

Though the church is not a theocratic national government, we know that the same principals he gave to his people in the Old Testament apply to us as believers, to the church universal. We are to care for the poor.
Paul shows us very nicely how to apply an OT principal from the law to New Testament dilemma. Some were wondering if preachers and teachers in the church should be paid or if they must volunteer as Paul often did:

7 Who serves as a soldier at his own expense? Who plants a vineyard and does not eat its grapes? Who tends a flock and does not drink the milk? 8 Do I say this merely on human authority? Doesn’t the Law say the same thing? 9 For it is written in the Law of Moses: “Do not muzzle an ox while it is treading out the grain.” Is it about oxen that God is concerned? 10 Surely he says this for us, doesn’t he? Yes, this was written for us, because whoever plows and threshes should be able to do so in the hope of sharing in the harvest. 11 If we have sown spiritual seed among you, is it too much if we reap a material harvest from you? 12 If others have this right of support from you, shouldn’t we have it all the more?
But we did not use this right. On the contrary, we put up with anything rather than hinder the gospel of Christ.
13 Don’t you know that those who serve in the temple get their food from the temple, and that those who serve at the altar share in what is offered on the altar? 14 In the same way, the Lord has commanded that those who preach the gospel should receive their living from the gospel.

So, beyond that we are to pay wages to those who minister the gospel to us: Paul wrote to pastor Timothy in
1 Timothy 5:17–18 NIV
The elders who direct the affairs of the church well are worthy of double honor, especially those whose work is preaching and teaching. For Scripture says, “Do not muzzle an ox while it is treading out the grain,” and “The worker deserves his wages.”

The ox being fed for his labors is the principal. The pastor, teacher, or elder should be able to make a living doing what they do. I would say, that living should be commensurate with the people they minister too, and not a great deal more or a great deal less.

Note that nowhere did God say those who believed in Him would be rich, he set the general principal that those who believe and worship only the one true God and who follow the commandments and laws they would prosper. What you consider to be prospering is different for different people. It doesn’t necessarily have to do with money.
Jesus’ view of money was either disinterest or negative every time.
A HIGHER LAW
A NEW COVENANT
So, the Old Testament laws are applicable today to us as principles to live by. They were given back then to people as a tutor to teach them right from wrong. Today, however, we are under a higher law, the law of the Spirit and of grace. Believers are governed by the Holy Spirit and by the grace of God which we then offer to others and the love of God which rules how we live and act. For example, back then we would be giving 10% and leave food on the edges for the poor etc., but today we are instructed to give generously.
We live now under a NEW commandment. We do not have 613 laws we have rather one law, the law of love for God and neighbor. This sums them all up. (See also ; ; and )

If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in them. 16 For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world. 17 The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever.
As for handling money and integrity in business, Jesus is very clear.
Jesus said in (NIV)

So if you have not been trustworthy in handling worldly wealth, who will trust you with true riches?

“No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.”

As citizens of heaven we are more concerned with the fullness of our hearts not that of our pocketbooks.

THINGS GO BETTER WITH GOD

In conclusion, if you honor God and do right, things will go better for you. Just a general principal since Adam and Eve. If you put your trust in earthly things, they will not go as well. When we trust in earthly goods it is idolatry and that is sin but it also brings with it cursing’s. These are general principals and we have all seen the righteous who work hard and are suffering in great need. We have seen evil people prosper as well. The final say is where you will spend eternity not how big your house is on earth. But I’m sure you can attest to the fact that those who make bad choices and live sinful lives generally live desperate lives. Things go better with God!
As for those who teach you differently, I would give this advice to help you distinguish truth from error.
