Valentines’ Day Sermon

Can anyone tell me what yesterday was? That’s right it was valentines’ day, who is here with their valentine? Great! That means that that’s the one you love the most. For now anyway.

Now real quick how did valentines get started?

There was a priest by the name of Valentine. He lived in Rome about 250 AD. That was a long time ago. At that time, Rome was ruled by an emperor by the name of Claudius. Some even called him Claudius the cruel, and St. Valentine didn’t like him to much. And a lot of people felt the same way. See Claudius wanted a big army because he loved power. He thought men should volunteer to join his massive army, but not that many signed up as you imagine not a lot of men were to found of going off to war, They did not want to leave their girlfriends of wives.

Well this made Claudius very mad, so do you know what he did? He had this crazy idea that if men did not get married then they would not mind going off to fight. So Claudius outlawed marriage.

St. Valentines’ favorite thing to do was marry people, so he thought that the new rule was ridiculous. So he kept on marrying people even though it was against the law. He would whisper the words of the ceremony, while listening for footsteps of the soldiers outside. One night he did hear footsteps. The couple he was marrying escaped, but he was caught. When they through him into jail, he was told his punishment was death.

What happened after that was amazing; many young people came to the jail to visit him. They threw flowers and notes up to his window. They wanted him to know that they, too, believed in LOVE. One of these young people was the daughter of the prison guard. Her father allowed her to visit him in his cell. They would sit and talk for hours, Now on the day he was to die, he left her a note thanking her for her friendship and loyalty, and he signed it “Love from your Valentine.”

That note started the custom of exchanging love notes on Valentines’ day. It was written on the day he died February 14. 269 AD. So now to this day on Valentines day we think of how much we love certain people, and I want you to know that love can not be beaten no matter how tries to stop it.

We know that love is very important. The Bible tell us in

1 John 3:18 NKJ

18 My little children, let us not love in word or in tongue, but in deed and in truth.

NIV8 Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth.

Our love must be a true love, and we should show that love by how we live and what we do. St Valentine backed up his belief with action even though he knew if he was caught he would die for it. But he is not the only one. God showed His love before we were even born by doing what.

John 3:16

6 “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

God sent His son to be tortured and die so we could have the opportunity to have eternal life and live in Heaven with Him forever. Let me ask you this, By a show of hands who here has ever like someone or wanted to go out with someone and the shot you down for what ever reason?

It hurts doesn’t it? Well that how God feels every time someone passes up the opportunity to het saved.

Listen to this while I close, God showed His love for us. So How can we show our love for him. I’m going to give you a quick list of ways.

1.    Love your neighbor.( all people)

2.    Let people see God through you.

3.    Tell others about God

4.    Read the Bible

5.    The most important is to give your heart to Him

I want you to look at one word tonight:

Distracted ---- Drawn apart; drawn in different directions; diverted from its object. (Noah Webster 1828)

We get distracted from our purpose!!!! I know you have heard why we are here and some refuse to believe it and others are happy letting others do it for them. But I will say this until the Lord sees fit to take me home. But we were created to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Period!!!!!!

And if you are saved and have had your name written in the lambs book of life; satan can not take you away but he can distract you. I want to ask you are you, ARE YOU DISTRACTED? We get so caught up in every day life we forget. I have heard it said well the bible says we win so why do I have to do anything. Church this is our Holy duty to spread the good news of our Lord and Savior!!!!

“Unlike a lot of churches today Jesus would teach and tend to all young Christians. The bible says That Jesus would carry them in His arms.

Isa 40:11

  11     He will  feed His flock like a shepherd;

He will gather the lambs with His arm,

And carry them in His bosom,

And gently lead those who are with young.

Church listen to me today,!! WE HAVE STOPPED DOING THAT TODAY!! How can we expect to see people to come to church and get saved when we will not even invite them to church? I read a poll in the  Florida Baptist witness that 80% of all saved Christians today were invited to church for the first time. But you see we do not want to offend anybody. We live in the United States of the offended.

When was the last time you brought someone to church!

Now I want to ask you this. Have you given your heart to God?

Do you live for Him and seek Him daily? Or are you just Distracted? (explain)

Young and old alike listen to me real close. This is the most important decision you will ever make in your life. What better time to give your heart to God than on Valentines day.  And God is giving you the opportunity to make it right now. If God is dealing with you tonight when I pray you repeat after me, No one looking just you and God. Let us pray.
