Scripture Reading:
Opening Prayer
Introduction
Have you ever faced a difficulty that you would rather not have to yet through it, something better than you could have imagined arrives?
We can trivialize this (no pain, no gain) and it is still true, but it can also come through some of life’s greatest hardships.
Mother’s funural
Today we are going to talk about what seems like “bad news” yet it is only through this seemingly bad news that the greatest news of all could ever have been shared.
Exposition 1
32 As they went out, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name. They compelled this man to carry his cross.
Mark says Simon was the father of Alexander and Rufus
Rufus may be the one mentioned by Paul
Perhaps they were well known
Perhaps it is to give an eye witness
There is nothing in the text to see this act as admireable
Mark says the Soldiers compelled him while Luke says siezed
Mostly seems to be here just to tell the story
33 And when they came to a place called Golgotha (which means Place of a Skull),
Matthew 27:
We get the name “Calvary” from Golgotha. Calva means “skull” in Latin
We don’t know the exact place but it would have been outside of the city (vs. 32 “went out”)
34 they offered him wine to drink, mixed with gall, but when he tasted it, he would not drink it.
Mark - Myrrh, Mark describes content, Matthew describes flavor.
<Matthew 27:
35 And when they had crucified him, they divided his garments among them by casting lots.
Explain crucifiction
36 Then they sat down and kept watch over him there.
This is probably stated because some may have argued that Jesus was removed from the cross
37 And over his head they put the charge against him, which read, “This is Jesus, the King of the Jews.”
:
Here begins a rather ironic portion of Scripture
Pilate places this “charge” on the cross to mock the Jews
Yet it is true
The thinking is “look how mighty your King is”
Pilate meant sarcasm yet the ironic thing, Jesus was in the midst of performing His greatest miracle.
38 Then two robbers were crucified with him, one on the right and one on the left.
Two rebels, story telling
:
39 And those who passed by derided him, wagging their heads
Jesus was being mocked by all
Specifically, in the following ways
40 and saying, “You who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save yourself! If you are the Son of God, come down from the cross.”
(No News) These people at least had some knowledge of what Jesus has said and done or at least what had been brought against Him at trial.
41 So also the chief priests, with the scribes and elders, mocked him, saying,
41 So also the chief priests, with the scribes and elders, mocked him, saying, 42 “He saved others; he cannot save himself. He is the King of Israel; let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in him.
42 “He saved others; he cannot save himself. He is the King of Israel; let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in him.
The truth here is that He is absolutely capable of “saving Himself” but the very act that they believe He needs saving from is actually saving others, perhaps even them!
40Matthew 27:
44 And the robbers who were crucified with him also reviled him in the same way.
The “robbers” also reviled Him, yet, Jesus died for one of them.
The point here really comes from the specific mockeries given in light of the surrounding context. Think through the text as a reader rather than someone there.
45 Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land until the ninth hour.
I. The King came to willingly die and save
I. The King came to willingly die and save
Exposition 2
45 Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land until the ninth hour.
12-3 darkness, no need to speculate
“All the land” means all of the Jewish land, not all the earth
46 And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” that is, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”
47 And some of the bystanders, hearing it, said, “This man is calling Elijah.”
48 And one of them at once ran and took a sponge, filled it with sour wine, and put it on a reed and gave it to him to drink.
49 But the others said, “Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to save him.”
50 And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice and yielded up his spirit.
II. God the Son willed His death upon the painful turning away of the Father
II. God the Son willed His death upon the painful turning away of the Father
Not suicide but a letting go.
