The journey to authenticity is key to the Christian life. The Old Testament prophet Jeremiah was raised up by God to condemn ritual without intention or worse, ritual used to cover up what was actually going on. Religious consumerism keeps us from truth. True religion calls us to care for more than ourselves but starts with hard conversations. Thankfully, the prophets are sent to help us find freedom.

March 10, 2019 The smaller groups in our church community are inside our homes where we go deeper, build friendships, and walk out the Christian life with each other. HOME CHURCH GUIDE + “Breaking the Ice” question (group facilitator) + CHECK-INS: Introduce, check-in + CARE: Needs in the group + COMPASSION: What is the group planning? Are you inviting your neighbours to join in? + GROUP ANNOUNCEMENTS Church-wide, group-only + DIG IN: Discuss questions as a group + END AND HOMEWORK: Final questions, prayer huddles for personal requests. Consider breaking into small groups (huddles) of 2-4, by gender, if large enough. DISCUSSION questions: NOTE–these are a guide. If there is good conversation, pursue that discussion! 1. In what situations do you feel you are the most authentic? In what situations are you least authentic? (And of course, tell us why!) On a scale of 1-10 where would you rank your authenticity in worship gathering and in home church? Why (fears, concerns, image)? What do you want us to believe about you? 2. Look at Jeremiah 7:1-15. What was Judah trusting (v4, 8-10) and why was this bad (v10-11)? Apply. What should they have done (v5-7) and what would God do if they didn’t (v12-15)? 3. Judah believed that the simple act of worship was, in and of itself, enough to satisfy God and ensure God’s protection. According to Jeremiah, God is more interested in how worship informs and shape one’s life of service. In what ways are we like Judah? What does God want from us (R. Laha)? JEREMIAH 7:1-8:3 Today’s Outline: Varughese/Stulman I. The Temple: A Den of Robbers 7:1-15/Worship that God Abhors II. Do Not Pray for This People 7:16-20/Worship of the Queen of Heaven 4. What is the relationship between faith and practice? List and discuss attributes of responsible living. How would you grade yourself in light of these attributes(R. Laha)? 5. In Jeremiah 7:16-34, what had God done for Israel (v22-23, 25) and how had they responded (v17-19, 24, 26, 30-31)? How was Jeremiah to act (v16, 27-28) and what would God do (v20, 28-29, 32-34)? III. A Deaf Society 7:21-29 /(21-28)/Obedience is Better than Sacrifice 6. Compare and contrast life in your city or town to life in Jerusalem and Shiloh in Jeremiah’s time. What might God want to say to you today(R. Laha)? Prayer Requests: IV. The Valley of Slaughter 7:30-8.3 /(29-3)Descent into Hell: Human Sacrifice in Judah
