10 When the apostles returned, they reported to Jesus what they had done. Then he took them with him and they withdrew by themselves to a town called Bethsaida, 11 but the crowds learned about it and followed him. He welcomed them and spoke to them about the kingdom of God, and healed those who needed healing.

12 Late in the afternoon the Twelve came to him and said, “Send the crowd away so they can go to the surrounding villages and countryside and find food and lodging, because we are in a remote place here.”

13 He replied, “You give them something to eat.”

They answered, “We have only five loaves of bread and two fish—unless we go and buy food for all this crowd.” 14 (About five thousand men were there.)

But he said to his disciples, “Have them sit down in groups of about fifty each.” 15 The disciples did so, and everyone sat down. 16 Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke them. Then he gave them to the disciples to distribute to the people. 17 They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over.

Sermon Title: God is Faithful to Provide
All cards on the table. I’m fearful of making this about me.
God’s provision is a deeply personal topic for us.
First generation American. Parents came to the states in 1979. Have an ethic of hard work.
Worked my way through college. Met my wife at CFNI.
Married for 10 years we have always both worked.
We own a studio salon. Lauren is a mom and a business owner.
2018:
It was easy to rely on our giftings.
Early 2017, began to sense a shift. The Lord was dealing with me. I was physically present as a husband and father but was emotionally and spiritually absent.
Through counseling… the Lord began to deal with issues in my life that I was unwilling to touch—fatherhood issues.
December 2017: Decided to take a step of faith out of obedience to the Lord’s leading and leave a job I loved (place of affirmation). One income. What I thought was going to be 4 months turned to 12 months.
January: Major shifts in the salon—our only source of income. We knew the Lord was in the midst of it but we were uncertain/fearful if we were going to be able to make it.
February-May: We walked through an education assessment season with Cru and a salon remodel—spent money we were not expecting to spend. There were many nights I would be up in the middle of the night asking/pleading with God to increase my son’s capacity to learn to speak.
May: House broken in to and had quite a bit taken from us. We were in despair.
June: The Lord was gracious to provide somewhat of a reprieve through the World Cup and God provided through friends an ability for us to go to Sea World for Cru’s birthday and Vail, CO on a family vacation. Joy abounded as I delighted in my boys!
I registered to Lyft. Yet, didn’t feel at peace about switching my status to ON.
August-October: Difficult season of interviews that resulted in no job/income, calling was being tested, giftings were being tested. Our community rallied around us as frustration and thoughts of feeling misunderstood abounded.
Alright Lord you gotta do something!
November-December: Finances came down to the wire. It was the beginning of December and I was frantically thinking who could let us borrow money.
January: Received a check from family land that was sold.
Through it all we saw the Lord’s provision, help and peace.

I need Him! I’ve always been keen on my need for Him.
Don’t neglect that the crowd, they would have come from a wide cross-section of Galilean society.
Know: Impure - sick with various diseases.
Assume: Farmers, fisherman, and homemakers

would have come from a wide cross-section of Galilean society. Farmers, fishermen, and homemakers as well as would have made up the largest portion of this crowd.
The fact that it was a deserted/desolate/remote (v. 12) place means that there was no possibility to be selective of the guest list.
He welcomed them all, he spoke to them, and healed them.
Luke is making a point to look forward to the end time reality that will all one day tak
He has once and for all broken down the barriers of socioeconomic status, race, color, political affiliation, etc.

He parties with everyone. Hor d'oeuvres for everyone. Drinks for everyone. A banquet feast for everyone.

You may be sitting in here today saying, “I believe God can provide but not for me.”
I was more focused on God’s provision than focused on who He was.
You may not need His physical/material provision but you need HIM!

His provision confronts the present reality of our circumstances with the ever present reality of who He is.
Confrontation: a face-to-face meeting OR the clashing of forces or ideas

a: a face-to-face meeting

b: the clashing of forces or ideas: CONFLICT

Disciples see a real need and they don’t have the necessary means to provide it.
GRAB THE BREAD BASKET
2018 the Lord confronted me with His provision.
I had abdicated being a man (husband, Father and Friend) because I didn’t trust God’s faithfulness to provide.
I abdicated being a man (husband, Father and Friend) because I didn’t trust God’s faithfulness to provide. On my own I go into self-preservation mode.
I didn’t trust God to use what I had, so I began to strive (Duty vs Delight) which led to disconnect.
I knew that He would provide but I had doubt and fear
On my own I go into self-preservation mode. I cease to see Jesus and His preservation of me.
I need a job but Jesus wanted me to see my need for him
everything: crusaders, advocates, critics. Into "causes" and explaining to others how things "ought" to be.
Enneagram #1 - Reformer: says that at my best, I am tolerant, accepting, discerning, wise, humane, prudent, principled, fair, and able to delay rewards for a higher good. Yet, under stress I become Dissatisfied with reality, become a high-minded idealists, feeling that it is up to me to improve everything: crusader, advocate, critic. I’m Into "causes" and explaining to others how things "ought" to be.
Culture
We focus on what we have. Food = Everyday Need
I don’t blame you.
Culture’s Demanding Questions (for you, technology, parenting, relationships)
What is your capacity for producing? (Basket)
How fast can you go?
How fast can you go? (go and buy food for this crowd)
God’s ability to provide is not limited to your capacity.
Disciples were focused on the basket.
Jesus confronts you to raise your eyes beyond the basket.

2 In the desert the whole community grumbled against Moses and Aaron. 3 The Israelites said to them, “If only we had died by the LORD’s hand in Egypt! There we sat around pots of meat and ate all the food we wanted, but you have brought us out into this desert to starve this entire assembly to death.”

4 Then the LORD said to Moses, “I will rain down bread from heaven for you. The people are to go out each day and gather enough for that day. In this way I will test them and see whether they will follow my instructions.

Jesus confronts you to raise your eyes beyond the basket.
Where you focus your eyes is where you end up.
Dad and soccer, “Look up!” I was 18 the last time I played with Dad.

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, 2 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith.

Are you going to trust in your own strength or trust in what Jesus by the power of the Holy Spirit can do through you?

Communal in our relationship with:
God
Others
You are not in this alone.
We need each other to point each other back to Jesus.
SUBPOINT #1

SIT DOWN

“Sit Down” is in all the Gospel accounts of this miracle.
Sitting down = reclining
Sitting down is the posture they took in order to eat = Sitting down is the posture we take to receive and partake of the provision of God.
What do you do after a long day? Introvert and dark room
Sitting down is the opposite of being anxious
What do you do after a long day?
I woke up and continue to wake up many mornings singing to and telling Jesus that His love is better than life.
We are unable to provide for ourselves the way only Jesus can.

29 And do not set your heart on what you will eat or drink; do not worry about it. 30 For the pagan world runs after all such things, and your Father knows that you need them. 31 But seek his kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well.

22 Then Jesus said to his disciples: “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; or about your body, what you will wear. 23 For life is more than food, and the body more than clothes. 24 Consider the ravens: They do not sow or reap, they have no storeroom or barn; yet God feeds them. And how much more valuable you are than birds! 25 Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to your life? 26 Since you cannot do this very little thing, why do you worry about the rest?

27 “Consider how the wild flowers grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. 28 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today, and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, how much more will he clothe you—you of little faith! 29 And do not set your heart on what you will eat or drink; do not worry about it. 30 For the pagan world runs after all such things, and your Father knows that you need them. 31 But seek his kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well.

4 Even though I walk

through the darkest valley, a

I will fear no evil,

for you are with me;

your rod and your staff,

they comfort me.

5 You prepare a table before me

in the presence of my enemies.

You anoint my head with oil;

my cup overflows.

6 Surely your goodness and love will follow me

all the days of my life,

and I will dwell in the house of the LORD

forever.

WE NEED ONE ANOTHER

SUBPOINT #2

WE NEED ONE ANOTHER

We need each other to point each other back to Jesus.
My wife and friends continually pointed me to Jesus.
We couldn’t have made it through that season without people around us.
Queue Lifegroups
Be known, walk vulnerably.
Many times God’s provision comes through the people we are in community with.

16 Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke them. Then he gave them to the disciples to distribute to the people.

JESUS’ PROVISION IS DIVINE.

Read

16 Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke them. Then he gave them to the disciples to distribute to the people.

His provision never runs out.
“He gave them” = a continual giving.
Luke 12:22–31 NIV
We cannot stop or control it or understand it.
You may be saying I don’t need Jesus. Don’t realize that even in your abundance, it is Jesus continually providing for you.
His continual giving marked them so much that it was a catalyst to recognizing Jesus after He rose from the dead in Emmaus.
Took the bread, gave thanks, broke it and gave it.

28 As they approached the village to which they were going, Jesus continued on as if he were going farther. 29 But they urged him strongly, “Stay with us, for it is nearly evening; the day is almost over.” So he went in to stay with them.

30 When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them. 31 Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him, and he disappeared from their sight.

This is not about food! This is about Jesus being the Messiah! He is greater than anything.
The divine provision of God not only meets the needs in front of us, but is also used to open people’s eyes to who Jesus is.
God’s provision is so magnificent that it can only point to back to Him. It’s His glory on display.
Know that Jesus is able to do far more than you can ask or imagine, according to the power that is at work in you.
His provision is not limited to what you have. He takes what you have and multiplies it if you would trust in Him.

I am a foodie. We can be eating at breakfast and be talking about what we’re going to eat for lunch or dinner.
I HAD to make fish and bread yesterday. Show SLIDE.
Not only did Jesus feed them, He satisfied them!
How many of us have tried to seek satisfaction in transient things? Looking forward to the next best thing?
Culture only satisfies until the next best thing is available.
Commitment levels = the benefits of the relationships
Commitment levels are equal to the benefits of the relationships

35 Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.

Hindsight is 20/20. Satisfaction is found when we remember His faithfulness
Disciples collecting 12 Basket fulls.
SLOW DOWN: Just hours ago, disciples started with 1 and they ended with 12.
The Scriptures would remind us over and over to look back and remember the faithfulness of God.
It is in this moment as the disciples are picking up the leftovers that they are looking back at what just a few hours ago seemed impossible—5,000 people with no food. As they look back they are reminded of God’s faithfulness and His provision being all-satisfying.
The Scriptures would remind us over and over to look back and remember the faithfulness of God.
He not only provides for our needs, he provides them according to His riches in glory
He not only gives us life, He gives us life more abundantly.
He not only causes us grow, He causes us to grow into vibrant oak trees.

Son and Daughter = Allow Jesus to tell you who you are
Encounter Jesus = Spend time with Jesus and allow His face to transform you. Besetting sins
Practice His Ways = Serve and allow Jesus to multiply your abilities. Give out the bread He has given you.
Build His Kingdom = Time you start walking in the call He has on your life for our city, nation or nations of the earth.
