Start with Video of Atonement from Bible Project
Ultimately, this annual purgation reiterates the need for a full and final cleansing – one that cannot be threatened or undone – for the covenant promise of humanity’s communion and fellowship with God to be realized.

The Day of Atonement includes, then, three main rites that are interwoven as one ceremony: an entrance rite, of the high priest into the inner sanctum; a cleansing rite, of the tabernacle cultus; and an elimination rite, of the people’s sins into the wilderness.

3 themes of the Day of Atonement
Cleansing the tabernacle and the people of God
Approaching the Divine Presence
Reentering the Garden of Eden
Through our study thus far we have been working through individual response to God both voluntarily and involuntarily. We have seen what God calls for in those instances when we seek to approach Him and when He calls for us to. We have also seen the setting apart of a High Priest and Priests to serve inside the tabernacle to help individuals perform the rites appropriately, stressing their worthiness to do so and their need for consecration to be able.
