TRUTH: We cannot understand God’s Word a part from the Holy Spirit
How many of us have tried to understand God’s Word on our own strength or initiative?
Raise your hand if you have ever sat through a infomercial?
All of us have right? A few things are present in all infomericals.
A situation we all have
A problem we all have in that situation
One thing that everyone is missing
A solution to it all because of the one thing they are offering
“Yes! My elbow does hurt when I blow dry my hair!”
“Yes! My eggs do stick to the pan every time!”
It’s like, “Yes! My elbow does hurt when I blow dry my hair!”
“Yes! My bathtub never drains fast!”
With infomericals, there’s always a problem. And the by the end of the commercial, there’s always a solution.
As we continue talking about the Holy Spirit, I believe there’s a infomercial for all of us.
Holy Spirit Infomercial
“Have you ever sat down to read the Bible and you didn’t understand it?
Day after day we try to read the Bible and meet with God, but the words just don’t make sense.
The Holy Spirit is here to help. Invite the Holy Spirit to help you understand the Scriptures, it’s His job!
So the next time you sit down to read the Bible, the Holy Spirit will guide you into all the truth. Never sit down and waste your time again!”
Don’t we feel like that a lot of the time? We finally decided to open God’s Word and after 5 minutes we’re over it because we don’t understand it? It’s like we waste our time.
That was humorous, but let’s see how that is actually true.

God’s Word

We pick up where we left off last week. Jesus is speaking to His disciples about what it’s like after He’s gone. They do not like it, but Jesus is comforting them with the truth of what’s going to happen.
John 16:12–15 ESV
12 “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. 14 He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. 15 All that the Father has is mine; therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.
John 16:12-15
Last week we talked about how the Holy Spirit is the very presence of God indwelling us as believers. That’s what the Holy Spirit is for us. Tonight we are pressing in on what the Holy Spirit’s job is for us.

The Holy Spirit’s work in our lives is to illuminate us to understand.
Illustration: Walking in the house in the middle of the night
It would be absolutely dumb to continue fumbling around when we have a light at our disposal.
The same is true of our spiritual lives. A lot of have been trying read and understand God’s Word on our own ability. tell us that it’s the Holy Spirit’s job to illuminate it for us.
The Road to Emmanu
The Road to Emmaus
Luke 24:25-2
Luke 24:25–27 ESV
25 And he said to them, “O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! 26 Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory?” 27 And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.

John 16:13 ESV
13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.
>> When you go to read God’s Word, as a believer, the Holy Spirit is faithful in those moments to bring understanding.
God promises to be with us when we are faithful to spend time in His Word.
When we spend time in God’s Word we spend time with God.
>> When you go to read God’s Word, as a believer, the Holy Spirit is faithful in those moments to bring understanding.
Understand for what?
John 16:13
John 16:13 ESV
13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.
“Whatever he hears he will speak” - The Holy Spirit will always point us to Jesus.
Some of us aren’t getting pointed to Jesus when we read the Scriptures, because we aren’t allowing the Holy Spirit to guide us! We are reading the Bible in light of ourselves instead of Jesus. DANGER OF BEING EGOCENTRIC.
Students, the goal of reading God’s Word isn’t so we will increase in knowledge of God alone, but we would increasing in our knowing of God. If you do not have a desire to know God when you read God’s Word, then you’re missing it!
We have the glorious reality of coming alongside God. Why would we ever neglect that?
TRUTH: We cannot understand God’s Word a part from the Holy Spirit
We do not have to do it alone. The Holy Spirit is the very presence of God who is our Helper.
