Intro: This one of those parts of the Bible where you read the verse ans say, what?
It is very likely that the intentions of Jesus were misunderstood and misrepresented. Even today the words of Jesus, and all of the Bible are hard for some people to compered and accept.
As with any passage of scripture we examine, context is always the key. We always have to consider a passage within the context if we are to properly discern its true meaning. This one of the reason I like to preach verse by verse.
So, as we have studying the gospel of Mark, we have seen that Jesus faced continual opposition from the Scribes and Pharisees.
They were determined to follow Jesus everywhere He went. Why? Why would they follow someone that they hated, they disagreed with? They were looking for some reason to accuse Him. Their goal was to condemn Him.
Jesus coming on the scene really messed things up for them. They had all the control over religion, the law. They had control over the Synagogue, and what was taught there.
So when Jesus came along, His teaching was nothing like anyone had ever heard.
John 3:
John 3:1–2 NASB95
1 Now there was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews; 2 this man came to Jesus by night and said to Him, “Rabbi, we know that You have come from God as a teacher; for no one can do these signs that You do unless God is with him.”
Few got it, most did not. He messed their whole way of life up. This message is talking and being apart of a spiritual family. They wanted no part of it. They didn’t want to change.
Being a part of the Family of God means we have a adopt to His ways. To many people today have made up who they think God is in their own minds, and not the God of the Bible.
As will see in these verses even some of Jesus’ own earthly family, didn’t understand Jesus in a spiritual way.

The request of the family. VS 31-31

Mark 3:31 KJV 1900
31 There came then his brethren and his mother, and, standing without, sent unto him, calling him.
Mark 3:31 NASB95
31 Then His mother and His brothers arrived, and standing outside they sent word to Him and called Him.
Mark 3:21 KJV 1900
21 And when his friends heard of it, they went out to lay hold on him: for they said, He is beside himself.
Mark 3:21 NASB95
21 When His own people heard of this, they went out to take custody of Him; for they were saying, “He has lost His senses.”
Jesus had been teaching, preaching, great miracles, he hand picked a group men, the Apostles. Some of the things He had been teaching seemed odd to some people loved what He was doing, other questioned what He was doing. This caused a concern with His own family. Some taught He had lost His mind. I believe some the talk about Him was an embarrassment for them. So plan was to get Him home. VS 31
NASB “lost Hi s
2. Jesus is teaching, He has just dealt with the Scribes that said He cast out demons by the power of the devil.
a. He brothers, 1/2 half brothers and His Mother show up. I do not think that Mary had the same feelings about Jesus (lost his mind) like the others did. She who He was, but I believe as a mother she was concerned about His safety.
b. As He taught His family, brothers His mother, had gathered in the back of the crowd. A lot of people were there. They (family) were outside, word gets to Jesus that His family is there.
Mark 3:22 NASB95
22 The scribes who came down from Jerusalem were saying, “He is possessed by Beelzebul,” and “He casts out the demons by the ruler of the demons.”
Mark 3:32 KJV 1900
32 And the multitude sat about him, and they said unto him, Behold, thy mother and thy brethren without seek for thee.
Mark 3:32 NASB95
32 A crowd was sitting around Him, and they said to Him, “Behold, Your mother and Your brothers are outside looking for You.”
Not only Jesus, but those around Him knew His family, His mother wanted Him. Never would Jesus disrespect His mother. But the most important thing for Jesus was His father business.
Luke 2:49–50 KJV 1900
49 And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father’s business? 50 And they understood not the saying which he spake unto them.
John 2:3–4 KJV 1900
3 And when they wanted wine, the mother of Jesus saith unto him, They have no wine. 4 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, what have I to do with thee? mine hour is not yet come.
b. His work for the father was first, even before His family. What His family was doing, even though they didn’t realize it, was hindering the moving of the Holy Spirit.
c. Meaning well, meaning Christians have hindered the work of the Holy Spirit, simply because they don’t understand what He is doing.
d. There a comments that you may hear in the church.
“We ain’t never done it like that before”.
“That’s not in the by-laws”
“I don’t like it that way”
“My way is better”
“That want work”
e. Sometimes it’s people in the church that hinder Gods work.
f. Sometimes we do things or don’t do things and we stand in Gods way.
e. Jesus own family were trying stop Him from doing His fathers works.

The response of Jesus. VS 33-35

Mark 3:33 KJV 1900
33 And he answered them, saying, Who is my mother, or my brethren?
Mark 3:33 NASB95
33 Answering them, He said, “Who are My mother and My brothers?”
Jesus doesn’t leave His fathers work to go to his family. He ask a rhetorical question- “who is t mother, who are my brothers”
a. He did not intent to be rude, but to use this as a teachable moment. To show His love and commitment to His father.
c. Its a question of, who is a part of my spiritual family?
Mark 3:34 KJV 1900
34 And he looked round about on them which sat about him, and said, Behold my mother and my brethren!
Mark 3:34–35 KJV 1900
34 And he looked round about on them which sat about him, and said, Behold my mother and my brethren! 35 For whosoever shall do the will of God, the same is my brother, and my sister, and mother.
Mark 3:34 NASB95
34 Looking about at those who were sitting around Him, He said, “Behold My mother and My brothers!
